[SU/Discussion/Brainstorming] - Have Party, Will Travel

To which Tali would agree, being somewhat angry that a tavern would keep a cheating dartboard around. She would reluctantly hand over her coin, while leaning over on Raz somewhat because she would have problems walking straight. She would then deny knowing any drinking songs, as she cannot carry a tune to save her life.

To which Raz would support her much shorter friend as they stumble down the road and say that it was such a shame that she didn't know any songs. Then she would happily propose that she teach her a few that she'd picked up over the years and not to worry about singing, all elves have great voices to humans anyway, so they won't mind.

Then drunken singing would commence about a bawdy tale of a sailor and a broom he betrothed.

To which Tali would be shocked to hear a tale of a sailor loving a broom. She would be unable to comprehend it, and then make bad puns about how the relationship must have been clean... but stiff.

And during all that, Ryan, being the sleazy bastard of a bard that he is, would be strumming some entertaining music while thinking this will make an awesome comedic ballad for him to compose and preserve the girls' drunken fun for posterity.

XD Save some humor for the RP, people!

To which Raz would being laughing far too much than Tali's jokes warranted but that was okay, because they were quite funny and Raz was a bit Worse for Drink anyway. Then she would get a confused look in her eye and say, did we make a wrong turn somewhere? That tavern should be right here.

To which Tali would be quite shocked to see that it was gone. She would then suggest that they go back to the inn... but she can't seem to remember where it had been placed. :gasp:

To which Raz would drunkenly wheel the pair around and see that they had indeed made a wrong turn somewhere. Ha! Mystery solved. Then she'd guide her friend to the new tavern, and order another drink, while eying the dartboard suspiciously to make sure it didn't move.

Then she'd turn to Tali and say it was her turn to make the bet.

OMG I haaaate this template it made me think T.T

Then she'd turn to Tali and say it was her turn to make the bet.

To which Tali would agree and place the bet, only to find that her shots are still missing, and her vision is beyond blurred. She'll be getting really, really tired as she throws her darts and they keep hitting the wall instead of the dartboard.

D: Ok, I think this is where I'll put my foot down and say that SUs are now closed, we'll just get Gavin to finish his (BTW if you involve too much furry porn in this RP I'll probably have to come spank you) and then we'll begin. 13 characters is gonna be a lot of keeping up to do ^_^;

Wait...13...

8D LUCKY/UNLUCKY 13. This is a perfect number! <3

@ Lelouch: It's nice to have you! XD

I have only some observations about the character. First of all...D: Wai have you skipped the personality!? Go back there and add it! *fussfusspesterpester* Let's see what this cutie's all about.

Second, when it comes to the Other Skills section, that Darkness part seems to fit Abilities better. You need to tell us where this power comes from, what it is, how it relates to him and how he got it. Tell us about it! And I'd appreciate if you didn't use video game terminology such as MP, HP and Slow, because we aren't going to use them here and they aren't giving us a clear picture of how the power works. Just describe that the attacks steal life power, magical energy and cause a form of paralysis that makes victims sluggish and unable to react as fast as they can.

I really like this guy's ability set and his appearance, but flesh him out a little more and explain the Darkness part a little better, and then I'll officially accept him. ^^

To which Raz would suggest that it's getting late for them both and perhaps they should go to bed. She would graciously offer her own home as a place to stay for the night if the elf does not already have accommodations in the city elsewhere, but warns her that the pillows in the guest bedroom leave much to be wanting.

Hmmm, Gavin, I have to admit I kinda like this character, he has some really fun skills, but I'm a little concerned he'll be a mite overpowered.

I want Jon to give this a lookover as well, but as for my part, I just want you to understand that, while I do like the idea of a psychomancer, some characters and creatures that the party will run into will either be immune and/or resistant to mind powers. I just want you to keep that in the back of your mind as a possibility. Specifically, part-fiends, demons and other infernal creatures will be the most common occurrence of this rule and I'll warn you before-hand about the extent of their resistance so that Vy can automatically know what he can or can't do to them--I imagine that his training includes such an ability to tell what he can fight and what not.

Infernal creatures generally will pose a mild threat to psychomancers of all kinds actually because of the infernal powers they work with. As far as Ryan's concerned, for example, while Vy can poke through his head no problem (though, um, given his imagination, Vy'd prolly want to be careful and have a sturdy stomach...) but when Ryan's infernal powers peak and he gets seriously angry and berserk, it's advised to all psychomancers to not attempt a mind probe--something that applies to all part-fiends (no exceptions) as it will get extremely painful for the mind reader.

Other creatures that mind powers won't work on are stuff that have insanely simple minds or neural systems like slimes and jellyfishes, and things that are dead (wraiths, ghosts, zombies, etc). Golems are a 50-50 case, depending on what type of golem they are (again I'll let you know beforehand).

Other than those rules to keep in mind, I think this character is mostly a-okay, although as I said I'd like Jon to give it a one over as well before I accept it.

=) Personally I think he and Ryan will have fun messing around with people's heads. He's got a tune or two that give people funny reactions as well XD

Jonny's looking over =3 I love how each time I log on, there's a bio to be reviewed.

Vylere Sakuros Bio said:
Vitality: Vy is impervious to mental and control attacks thanks to his training. His other magical defenses aren’t near as good but he can withstand magical blasts for awhile, maybe 5 direct hits. Physically, he relies more on his ability to dodge and parry because he can only take so much damage. As part of his training though, he has become immune to pain thanks to a subconscious program in his mind that stops the incoming signals.

Hmm...Most of this is good, but I would like to point out that an immunity to pain is a key weakness that you should not underestimate. Yes, it means that he can keep fighting when he's afflicted by minor injuries, but it also means that his sensitivity to the world around him - as most of our tactile sensory information comes from some form of pain - will be drastically reduced. Ergo he will not realize it when, say, a sword is stabbed through his gut or an axe buries itself in his spine or (as Phoebe and I are wont to do) other more creative injuries. I'm not saying you can't have this, but I would advise against it, as you may find that ultimately it becomes a disadvantage more than an advantage.

Speed: Near blindingly fast. It’s hard to believe that Vy can move as quickly as he does but it’s the truth. What’s more, he can think on the run, leading to him being able to create the illusion that he is appearing from nothingness and going into nothingness, like teleporting.

I don't know if Phoebe agrees (although I think she will once she sees this post), this speed is an absolute no-no. Being euphemistic for Rule of Funny is one thing, but to be able to move so fast that you appear to be teleporting is, in my books, a total no. This is overpowered and, especially considering the nature of your character, crosses the Power-Playing border by miles. Being fast is good - quick reflexes and running speeds etc. are not beyond reason - but being "blindingly fast" in a near-literal sense is a tremendous no.

Stamina: Were he fighting with an actual weapon in his hands, Vy could fight for maybe 30 minutes. Using the Insanity Jack though, Vy relies on his mind while his body avoids attacks. In this way, he could easily go on for days seeing as how easily the program comes to him. In any other mental way though, he can last maybe 3-4 hours before breaking a sweat.

"Days"? "3-4 hours before breaking a sweat"? Um...no. Against extremely minor enemies - say clumsy rat men or low-level zombies - the latter of these quotes would be doable, but stretching the limit. This is ridonkulously over-powered, and even the most powerful mages and warriors in this RP would have issues going for more than an hour against a difficult foe. I'm not sure you realize how taxing a real fight is; the amount of energy that goes into minor fights alone is formidable. This isn't Dragonball Z - we aren't warriors that have sufficient energy to blow up a star or fight for days on end - and we don't operate under similar rules (again, Rule of Funny will dictate the appropriateness of euphemisms and exaggerations). Basically, the stamina here is incredibly overpowered, and needs to be downplayed accordingly.

Reflexes: Playing a game of Chicken with Vy is exactly like signing your death wish. Quick enough that he can veer off at the exactly last second, it never comes to that as his opponents go some 45 seconds before he does and even then, depending on the game, he might just go over it. Vy knows where everything around him is at any given time, almost unconsciously; as a psychomancer, the environment is just as important as your ability and can make the difference between win and loss.

See the above as this is also incredibly overpowered and must be toned down significantly, and also realize that this contradicts Vy's immunity to pain; awareness is based on a sensory level, and Vy is ultimately crippled in his tactile senses. If he's unable to feel pain, he loses a significant portion of his sense of touch, and is therefore not able to be aware of everything around him at once (sight, sound, taste, and smell can only do so much, and they won't be increased in potency unless the sense of touch is removed completely, something which would put your character at an even greater disadvantage). This needs to be toned down and balanced with his other attributes.

At 5 stacks [of the Insanity Jack], the target begins to have mild hallucinations, perhaps insects getting in his face. At 10 stacks, the target begins having panik attacks as well. At 15 stacks, the minor hallucinations are joined by major ones like having there be a second enemy the victim is fighting. At 20 stacks the target enters true gibbering insanity; they lose any will to fight, most of the time, and are reduced to fragments of their former selves. That form however can be recovered from, usually in about 4 hours for those who began in a healthy state of mind. At 30 stacks, the insanity worsens, complete with delusions, psychosis, any number of mental disorders and is irrecoverable. As of yet, no one has gotten hit more than 18 times with the Insanity Jack.

Hmm...I love the concept. It's an excellent idea for a weapon, but the 'stacks' are a tad too small. 5 hits/stacks really isn't a lot, especially since heated battles tend to move very quickly. Perhaps double this, though I would suggest more; it should take at least ten stacks to induce hallucinations, though as I say there should be more.

Another problem arises in an earlier (unquoted) paragraph. You say that the Insanity Jack can deflect swords and weapons and the like, yet can injure people without actually injuring them. What if the Jack was up against an armored warrior/mage/whatever, something whose body was covered with the same materials which the Jack is said to be unable to penetrate? The problem here arises in the fact that you don't clarify what the Jack can or cannot pierce, and leave it very vague; does it affect only living tissue? Can it be impeded by only metal, or will other materials suffice? These, and others you should think of, are questions that should be answered when making a serious bio (as you are doing).

In addition to its madness inducing powers, the Insanity Jack also creates an instant and permanent mind jack to the target if it hit the head. The Insanity Jack can also be wielded by telepathy, making it an excellent mid and long range weapon as well.

I can't say I totally agree with this. A program that can shoot insanity-inducing energy while still dealing serious mental damage? Mid-range isn't bad; that's rather good and not beyond reason (e.g. a boomerang fractal), but long range brings up a slew of questions related that you really wouldn't want to deal with.

Mount: Vy doesn’t need a mount. His telekinesis is powerful enough that he can simply lift himself up and fly around. The downside though is that he can’t carry passengers if they combine past 300lbs and he has to stop and rest for ten minutes out of every 2 hours. This is not because of mental strain but because his body can’t take that much buffeting by the wind. He can move up to 30 mph on his own, 20mph encumbered by passengers.

Taking into account the subsequent Telekinesis thing, I like this. Good idea, if unoriginal.

Telekinesis: An inherent ability of all psychomancers and the one earliest cultivated. All psychomancers can use this but the potential for using it varies greatly. Weight wise, Vy can carry and use up to 300 lbs without a problem. This comes as naturally as breathing to a psychomancer and is just as strenuous to someone as skilled as Vy.

You really should be much more in-depth with this; simply tacking on a limit stretches many limits of the RP, and if you don't address questions here (e.g. mass, speed, duration, etc.) then you will have to do it as you go in the RP, which may interfere with the actual playing. I don't know about Phoebe, but while I'm not an ass about it I have very strong feelings towards Power-Playing and God-Modding; ergo you will eventually have to address the potential for Power-Playing, even if it occurs in the RP itself, and you will have to be rather thorough.

Program: Like you would with a computer today, Vy can create sub-conscious and conscious programs for actions utilizing his mental abilities. The programs require less effort to run and can also be implanted into other people. For instance, a program could make someone feel compelled to blow a raspberry should they ever hear the word help. However to implant them, a connection must first be established.

For very minor things like raspberries this isn't bad, but having a 2-week duration on the Mind Jack and being able to control them through Program is an absolute no-no. Due to the extreme Power-Playing issues that arise, this is allowed for all of a few seconds, and should be played only for laughs. The duration in Mind Jack - not counting the permanent Mind Jack as applied by the Insanity Jack, which will have to be removed entirely - will have to be severely reduced to mere seconds. 2 weeks is far too long, especially with an ability like this.

Telepathy: Another inherent psychomancer skill. This one however has two levels, surface and deep. Passively, psychomancers can hear surface thoughts without connection or concentration. They can also block out the voices or amplify one over others. To go deeper, either concentration or a mental connection is necessary. Deeper thoughts are those secrets and other hidden thoughts they don’t want others to see.

I draw the line at deeper. I mean...no. This is God-Modding, straight up, and Power-Playing at the same time. Not only are you able to look into other PCs and NPCs minds and derive secrets that are not up to you as a player, but you are also allowing yourself the ability to control them through manipulation and blackmail. It's one thing to have this 'surface' telepathy - which, though it should be reduced in potency, will serve as an excellent ability in this game when played only for laughs - but the deeper telepathy is incredibly...no. It's not fair to other players for you to be this overpowered.

The Coming: Requires Mind Jack. Really only good for pranks and quick stuns, this redirects electrical signals in the brain to make the target orgasm immediately. Kinda hard to fight when you just jizzed in your pants.

...I nearly wet myself laughing xD

Overall, even in sections I did not directly quote, you run into one serious problem:

Over-powered.

Nearly everything that I read through is the equivalent of powers useful in the Dragonball Z universe, and powerful enough to put their proponents to shame. We're not trying to make an RP where you get to rape everything in one go; this is a laid-back RP where you go and have some laughs as you kick some demon ass (just wait and see some of the dialogue that Phoebs and I have planned for Ryan and Ty) or make some quick gold. You need to step back a few paces and realize that the game isn't about winning or kicking ass; that all comes secondary to having fun with all the other people, something which is extremely difficult for someone to do when they become ostracized due to being a God-Modder or Power-Player.

Tone it down, step back, and don't be afraid to get your ass kicked once in a while; god knows that Ty's gonna get thumped on the head by critters every now and then (he's a straight man to Ryan's nutso) and Ryan will pull one of Ty's knives out of his rod here and again.

You have an excellent concept - very reminiscent, actually, of something that Phoebs and I are working on in our novels - and it would be a shame to see something with such potential be wasted or scrapped.

Do we have a start date yet? :3 (is being pushy) I'm excited to start, I have a few cool ideas for my first post <3

Well maybe all 13 won't be all teamed up. My Leo for example. Do something illegal and he's against you :P

And remember, Vy has a program in place to prevent seeing things liek that. After all, what has been seen cannot be unseen.

>w> And in order to adhere to the Rule of Funny we shall apply here, sometimes that should fail and give Vy a few 'CANNOT UNSEE' moments for the lulz.

Also...maybe calling those 'programs' is a bit confusing. They sound more like mental exercises or mental routines to me. Maybe you could call them that instead because people cannot read 'program' and not think about computers...

Do we have a start date yet? :3 (is being pushy) I'm excited to start, I have a few cool ideas for my first post <3

Yes, we're gonna start at the latest this Sunday or coming Monday because yours truly has to get the stressor called driving license exam out of the way and out of mind. This will also allow Dragon Mage ample time to get home from a trip, and enough time for me and Jon to plan out the beginning and initial plot while taking into account everybody.

I love how each time I log on, there's a bio to be reviewed.

Then you obviously do not log in often enough. >:

Please adhere sweetie. I wholeheartedly agree with Jon when he says he likes your concept. I love your character and the potential for hilarity he brings to the party, but I still think he needs those limits. You mentioned he's 16 (in elf years)--that's young and inexperienced and he ought to look the part. Give him some room to grow and develop in the course of the RP. He could hit SOME of those touchstones along the way.

1] Perhaps I should have explained it better. It's an immunity to pain in the sense that the actual signals of pain don't reach him as part of the program. He still retains the sensations of feeling; he'll know when he gets stabbed in the gut, he just won't feel the pain from it. Cause that's the thing, pain can drop someone out of the mental state they're in and thus Vy sould lose control over what he's doing and that's not good, not when it's his mind. I predict that it will delve into the deepest parts of his mind and create images of horrible horrible pr0n the likes of which are too horrible to describe.

Theoretically that's okay, but theory and practice are mostly divorced. But like Jon said, he and I will find very creative ways to induce hurt to characters and with complete immunity to pain, Vy could find himself suddenly unable to move because he got hit too badly--trust me, if I'm willing to sadistically torture my own character, I'll be a sadist to everyone >XD

2] Well, I can see how you would think so but if you look down near the bottom of the abilities you'll see exactly why it is worded liek this. There are also keywords in the description. He's a quick little bugger but because of his ability to create illusions, it seems like he is teleporting. If you want me to then I'll reword it.

I'd appreciate that. It's okay if he's fast about running AWAY from danger and using illusions is okay with me...but really being faster than a hummingbird on speed is just no.

3] Yes, days. The Insanity Jack program has been a part of Vy for quite some time and the its a sense of familiarity; everything gets easier the more we do it. This program has been with him for quite some time and the strain it takes to maintain it has lessened considerably. So yes, he could maintain it for days, under the conditions that he didn't sleep, that was the only thing he did, etc. Based on sheer mental capability alone he could wield it for days but he's not going to because he can't by logical limits and the fact that who the hell is just gonna let hims stand there and wield this thing?

And again, this is based on him doing that and that alone. This is just to show his mental fortitude. But again, I'll reword it if that's necessary.

You're contradicting yourself and making no sense, seriously. Just tone it down a little. I'm not going to let anybody have it so well when it comes to stamina and endurance for combat, whether its mental or physical duress. We want a bit of balance around here. Please reword this and tone it down a bit. Nobody, not even freakin' DEMONS will have so much stamina, dammit.

4] Granted, it is OP, but I'll say it again, he can still feel things but the signals of pain just don't make it there. I think I can feel it when a sword gets run through my gut. As for awareness, I should probably put that down in abilities shouldn't I? A psychic sensory field.

You have to realize that making your sensory system selectively detect some stuff and not others would be more demanding than hell? Whoa there Tex, no need to make Vy a braingod at the get go of the RP. Let him grow into more powers and experience over the course of the story, otherwise there won't be anywhere for him to go.

5] Fine, we'll add 7 to each number there. And yes, I do need to work on the penetration aspect of the weapon...hehehe....penetration. I'll start work on that tonight.

Hehehe, please remember that while I endorse and encourage the Rule of Funny law, this RP is still meant to be largely safe and family friendly. So uh, innuendos are okay but no explicit descriptions of pr0n! :wacky:

6] Okay, here you're completely misunderstanding it. It doesn't shoot anything. It becames a weapon wielded by telekinesis instead of his hands, which means it can be used at longer ranges. And yes, long range. Remember, its primary shape is a spear, and what do we do with spears? We chuck them at people at a distance. So Vy can hurl it using telekinesis, stop the program and restart it back in his hands.

Actually, sweetie, if you wanna get technical, it's javelins that you chuck at people. You use spears for close-quarters combat. Anyway, I kind of agree with Jon--there should be some kind of limitation to wielding this thing. Perhaps the further away it's from Vy the weaker it's effects get? That way we take out the possibility of Vy getting into a fight that poses no risk for him.

I want to stress this, not just for you but for everybody: A lot of the fights in this RP will NOT be light-hearted, curbstomp battles. It won't always be dungeon rats, or shambled zombies 100 years old with barely any meat on their bones or tiny slimes you could kick away. There will be dangerous situations that could very realistically kill your character and in this RP THERE IS NO RESPAWN.

I'm not being a bitch, I just want everyone to know that your characters are expected to think very well about whether they're gonna get involved in a potentially very risky battle that may not really reward them in any significant way.

8] I have the sneaking suspicion I may have to embark on an unholy alliance with FF just to get this done... Fine, I'll add maximums. -grumbles about uncertainty being more fun-

Limitations are even more fun because they force you to get creative and think out of the box. An enemy can be prepared for almost any level of power, but they will always be taken in by unconventional methods.

9] Now see, if I were going to control them, I would have said so. Bu in this sense, if i did that here, I would be making free will an illusion. The programs compells people to do things when a certain stimulus is perceived, like lying when something in particular is asked like whether you've seen anyone. You can't actually control anyone without destorying the mind as a psychomancer which is something that Vy can't yet do. So for right now, all he can do is influence.

Influence, I can live with. But that whole 'free will is an illusion' is not a good wording. You just influence people--no need to add words that make it sound that more powerful. Bear in mind that with some people or creatures there WILL be resistance. It'd be better if you added a margin of failure.

And I think Mind Jack is perfectly fine. And a permanent one for a head shot with the Insanity Jack is an almost unfair tradeoff in the favor of the target, I don't know if you saw that but thats what it takes, a headshot. Maybe 2 weeks is a bit much but anything less than 1 week compromises the potential and usefulness of of the class.

Trust me when I say that the way you've set him up there's very little that could compromise the usefulness of his class and if anything he's still rather OP. You need to understand that we aren't enforcing mitigation factors and limits because we're assholes--we're doing it because we want your character to be on fairly equal grounds as the other characters. They all have strengths and weaknesses and so far in Vy's bio you've hardly listed any weaknesses other than personal flaws. You MUST take into account the fact that Angria is a big place and there will ALWAYS be something Vy isn't prepared for or a foe way better than him. Losing sometimes isn't bad--it just strengthens the fact that Vy needs and will get help from his party members, because ultimately he is part of a party.

We're not asking you to make him a weakling. We just want to see him have a bit of balance and some weak flanks that opponents could potentially exploit. Weak flanks that he'd have to learn how to protect, thus becoming better.

10] Fine but that makes Porn and other dirty things a surface thought. Otherwise a great deal of hilarity surrounding the character gets wiped away.

Trust me when I say this, you can keep all that hilarity you want while still making him more balanced. I don't like to tout my own horn but look at Ryan. He has a balanced set of powers and skills but he also has a mountain of weaknesses because of said powers. And yet he's still a funny bastard because of those weaknesses. Many of the running gags about him usually involve stuff happening to him rather than him doing things to others.

What I'm trying get at is that
you shouldn't be afraid to occasionally humiliate or let mean things happen to your character (or do them yourself!). It makes them real and is part of the humor. Sure he can pull hilarious pranks on others but he should also be fairly open to being the victim of such pranks himself. It's part of being in this party of ragtag people traveling the world for glory, quick gold or to escape the Cotton Candy Monster.
