So the game has been released in Japan, and only 4 days after the release date, a video of one of the 8 possible endings has been leaked onto a website.

I say again, this is an ending to the game, so major spoilers for anyone who wants to discover it when they play it.

It shows Caius, fighting Noel and Serah, as the final boss in the game, weakened by the battle, he is seen knealt down in front of Noel, with part of his chest glowing a strange pink colour. After some conversation, he looks at Serah, and then goes to attack her with the Ragnarok, Noel defends her and in the final clash, proceeds to stab Caius in the chest, he stops himself at the last second, however Caius grabs Noel and forcefully stabs himself with Noel's weapon, releasing what appears to be a huge amount of Chaos from his body.

As Caius' body begins to fade away, Noel places the Ragnarok next to his lifeless body, and the sword disappears with Caius.

After some lengthy conversation between Noel and Serah, they travel through the time gate and land on a ship of some kind, as Cocoon falls a giant Sphere floats in the sky, which is where the Protagonists appeared from. Everything seems to wrap up, and Noel and Serah seem to be happy, but then all of a sudden, Serah's eyes show a strange light and Noel begins to shake her furiously, she loses consciousness and falls to the ground, and Noel holds her, screaming her name in despair.

Hope then appears from another ship and finds Noel and a lifeless Serah on the ground, and seems to look upset and distraught. They converse and then Mog also seems to die. Then Noel has a flashback of Caius and his glowing chest, looks at his hands in terror, and then the floating sphere in front of the ship starts to look menacing, as does the sky around it.

The scene then seems to move to Valhalla, where a petrified Lightning is sitting on Etro's throne, the words "to be continued" appear on the screen.

On the Final Fantasy wiki, this ending is explained in detail, compared to the other 7 which are explained in one sentence, so speculation has transpired as to whether or not this is a canon ending, and that the FFXIII-3 domain is actually for another sequel game.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is out in Japan and one user rushed home to capture the game’s opening, which takes place in Valhalla. Players start the game with Lightning who fights Caius and takes on Chaos Bahamut in the sky! The video also explains how Lightning meets time-travelling protagonist Noel, which may be considered a spoiler. You’ve been warned!

@Lulu-Urie, your thread in the news section has been moved over here, in order to keep all spoiler discussions under one thread. I find it preferable to keep the news section relatively spoiler-free, if that's alright with you. =]

Feel free to discuss your spoilers, people. Be mindful of the guidelines above.

That didn't take very long, did it ?

I won't be looking at the spoilers until after I play the game assuming I get "the good ending".

Hrumpf:megusta2:, I thought the FFXIII-3 idea had been dismissed as a gimick by Square NA. I guess not.
I was always suspicious of that. If I have been right all along it will really p me off.:holyshit:

nice thinking :) now i know what thread to avoid :D

FFXIII-3 might be on PSP Vita or other handheld. SE would be dumb as hell to put it on a console. :hmph: I would freeking hate SE if they decide to make another half-baked game.

People already finished the game wether its rush playing or normal, imo its way too short of a game. I bet the story is mediocre. Because you have 8 endings and many mini games etc. and it has a lot of replayability doesnt mean its a quality game which is worth the 60 bucks.

But who am I. I might be wrong as hell. If I'm wrong you praisers can happily shoot me.

If I were you, I should definitely check out all the spoilers! based on that you can save yourself time and 60 bucks or how much it costs in your country.

I got bored and decided to look at some of the live streams. It just so happened that one of them was the end of the game. So if you don't want to see how it ends and what I think of it, don't bother reading on.

It looks like there probably will be a Final Fantasy XIII-3. Either that or some future DLC episode as opposed to a full third game. Unless of course, Toriyama is in full troll mode and decides to just end it on an apocalyptic-melancholic note and just have everyone implicitly killed off.

To those of you who have seen the ending, you get a rough idea of what's happening. Caius fells himself, while Serah dies, possibly as a result of their fiddling of the timeline(s), Lightning appears to be petrified while sitting on Etro's throne, while Valhalla appears with the Chaos running rampant. Needless to say, Noel and Hope look a bit screwed, standing near the corpses of Serah and Mog, gazing at what has just appeared.

Which leads me to ask:

Is this the canon ending? It's done in full FMVs with Mai Fukui's song playing, and it's highly unlikely that this would just be an ending. You can't possibly have all other multiple endings be in full CGI as well, for money and space issues - and this game is supposed to take up less space than its predecessor, so there definitely has to be something special about this ending.

The ending itself therefore:

...is just a bloody cliffhanger then. That it? Why end it on a cliffhanger? I'm pretty sure they said something about this game being all about Lightning finding her true happiness. What sort of happiness is that when her only family left is dead and she herself is a rocky mineral while all hell is breaking loose? Are they not even capable of ending their stories anymore and feel the need to drag it on, possibly create yet another needless yet quick-cash sequel?

Motomu Toriyama in a recent interview said:
The past year has seen many disasters - not only in Japan but also across the world. We sincerely hope that the story of Final Fantasy XIII-2 will bring hope and courage to many people’s hearts.

:awesome:

I had watched two live streams of the game a lot over the weekend. I'm wanting to get the game only for the battle system and recruiting monsters.

I didn't like the ending, not just because it ends up bad and it's apparently canon either. Did a happy sounding song really have to play when Serah and Mog died? Very unfitting. And apparently you're stuck in a time loop that's unable to be broken? What the heck? What's the point of the game then? You do a lot of work to get everything in the game just to see it all get screwed over in the ending? Not even able to do anything about it in more playthroughs either.

Makes me think of Sonic '06 a bit where at the end of the game, everything that happened in it ended up being just a dream. The game itself wasn't good anyway. :argh:

Lulu-Urie, Fleur

As Fleur know, I have discussed the ending, but unspecifically without spoilers, in this thread:http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/showthread.php?t=51273
But since you can discuss spoilers in this thread, I'm going to talk further =)

WARNING. Obvious spoilers:
Yes, that tragic and inconclusive ending where Serah and Mog died, and Lightning got petrified, is indeed the true ending. The continuation is a secret ending.

The secret ending goes like this. WARNING. Obvious spoilers:
Caius is actually alive. He says that he's going to build a world without the goddess and then release more of those chaos thingy from his sword, indicating his victory.

Now you also see how inconclusive the secret ending is. It's my opinion, but after playing XIII-2 (with translations from a website), I really like the game and parts of the story. The story is very confusing, but it's good for my liking. But the ending is very disappointing. Though I really like the beginning of the ending where the old cocoon falls and the new one rises.

Meanwhile, the other endings are actually not proper endings. most of them are joke endings or what-if scenarios. They are either obtained by beating a very strong boss, or making an obviously wrong choice in live triggers. Thus these other endings are most likely just meant for fun. One of these endings involve Serah and Noel disguising as monsters to poison a giant flan. It's stupid and funny at the same time XD.

So as you all said, a XIII-3, DLC or any form of continuation is very likely. I myself will actually be happy if they continue with an advent children style movie. To think about it, this is not the only FF with an inconclusive ending. Look at FFVII's ending. The short clip at the end of the credits isn't really conclusive of the characters' fates either. But yeah as we all know OMG FFVII IS THE GREATEST GAME IN THE WORLD. NO ONE SHALL COMPLAIN ABOUT IT!!! rofl. But I do agree the original FFVII's inconclusiveness is not as bad as XIII-2's 'to be continued'.

Does anyone have a link to the FMV? I can't find it? >_<

I personally wouldn't mind a third game in the main XIII series. :lew: They're technically creating a more complex story but in segments. :)

Edit: okay, I managed to find a version online! :)

Even though I have no idea what was said, I really liked it... I liked the fact it was open ended and sad - X was sad, wasn't it, and I think it's the best ending in any FF game.

Again, I reiterate the point about a series of connected games. Although people can argue that Square are trying to milk their consumers of all their money, no one HAS to buy these games on the day or week or month of release. We could all opt to wait for a price drop.

I personally believe that the XIII series could be Squares attempt to bring us an in depth world with characters who are explored at a deeper level. The graphics etc of games now mean it's very difficult to create a game as lengthy or complex as VII, which has perhaps led to a decision to break a story up in to instalments. The fans get a new game every couple of years, each adding to the story and our perception of the characters. I don't know whether XIII-2 was planned from the start - it doesn't matter. XIII-3 (or whatever they choose to do) will link to XIII-2 and has almost certainly been planned.

Who knows. It could connect to Versus in some way. :P

:gasp2: oh my god please no!

it has already been connected actually...

Etro is in both games. Etro is like the guardian of the invisible world in both games.

Of course they will be connected in some ways, even slightly. There's a 'XIII' in their titles after all.

I understand that there will be connections, but the fewer the better. I don't mind references in terms of storyline or characters, but hopefully nothing big and nothing bad.

It will be nothing big. The games in the compilation are just vaguely connected in that they have a common mythological base to refer to. For instance, terms such as L'Cie have appeared in FF13, FF13-2 and Type-0, and will likely do so in Versus as well.

Writers and directors of each game in the compilation look at the mythology, interpret it in their own ways and write separate stories based on/with references to it. And that's pretty much how it should be, so don't expect any Lightnings to randomly waltz into Versus, or a familiar cocoon-like planetoid to be visible in the sky.

From what I get of the ending:

Etro, you troll (it would be funny if Versus's Etro is similar!). Caius, you troll. Actually, to think about it, the ending isn't so bad after all if they leave it as it is and remove the "TO BE CONTINUED". The villains technically win! Everyone else is screwed! It's a very novel kind of ending that we've not seen before!

@ Fleur

We may have never seen a villain win in a Final Fantasy ending before, but most FF endings have never been 100 % happy shininess and rainbows. In FF2 Leon walks out on his sister who fought to bring in back from the Empire, in FF4 Kain can't bear to watch Rosa and Cecil be married, FF5 Galuf is dead and his granddaughter grieves at the place that he died, FF6 Gogo and Shadow commit suicide, FF7 Midgar is destoryed, FF8 Seifer is shown to be a good person but he may never enter Balamb Garden garden again, FF9 Zidane is missing for a year and he has to watch his brother die, FF10 Tidus being a dream has to leave.

Even though FF XIII-2 is showing a villian wins ending, it's not like FF endings have always been completely cheerful.

I personally like the exploration of the Paradoxes. The story at times didn't make a whole lot of sense tying together. Though when it all boiled to the end it made a little more sense. They sort of got a bit sloppy throwing in Vanille and Fang for a cameo at the end, but whatever I guess.

Personally it was refreshing for me. I would say on a scale of 1-10, I would give it a 7. Though I gave FFXIII a 5 so.. yea. Anyway I could go on about the story, but I'm getting lazier in my old age :jtc:

Did anyone else notice that Mog doesn't have his staff in the ending scene? One of the fragments also mentioned that Mog's true form is IN the staff, and the moogle body is just a dummy. This may or may not mean something significant. Mog to the rescue anyone? He may not be affected by chaos.

Anyway, I have just gotten a platinum for the game :D (Well not really platinum, because I'm playing on xbox, but yeah, I got all achievements).

Oooh that's an interesting concept, maybe they'll bring out a DLC explaining Mog's story? I don't think they get into it that much during the game, I'd actually not be surprised if they bring out the whole FF9 Mog story again though.
