Exactly. I would have liked to see another game with FFII's system or at least a variation of it. I liked how your spells leveled up individually and how the animation changed at certain intervals. It made more sense that way. I guess VII's materia system was close to that but it used AP instead...
I have heard about something like this. I tried to begin my game and go through it at level 1 and it seems possible but once I got to the black waltzes I had to train. I guess I didn't try hard enough.
I haven't really used Quina too much in my first playthrough but I'm playing it over again and I'm using Quina all the time. Blue magic is quite useful early in the game. I remember Mighty Guard helping me to survive Beatrix's attack in Burmecia when you first fight her.
