I would say 2000-3000 is best. It seems that's what most people are comfortable with, and while it's not a massive amount, it's enough to give people room to write something properly. Plus if it looks like it isn't working out it could be reviewed in future?

I think if we do it every other month then they're too far between. It needs to be done semi-regularly so that people are more aware of it.

Fan fiction isn't really my thing so I wouldn't be particularly bothered about that. Other than that though I'm happy with just about anything. I think making it a monthly competition would probably work best; that should allow enough time I'd say.
