as always, it a rumor, take some salt while reading

Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been in some kind of limbo funk since it was first unveiled some eight years ago. There’s a fresh rumour doing the rounds that the game is now going next-gen, and that Square-Enix is dropping the ‘Versus XIII’ mantle.

As always with these rumours, don’t take it at face value until we’ve spoken with Square-Enix or they clarify it themselves.

The rumour comes from NeoGAF user Verendus who has been spilling a few next-gen nuggets from the look of things.

This rumour is that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will get a new reveal later this year to confirm its name change, next-gen development and 2014 release date. They also suggest that its a PS4 exclusive, just as it was originally a PS3 exclusive.

Could it be part of the supposed PS4 reveal later this month?

They also state that Final Fantasy 15 and 16 are currently in development for next-gen formats. Given their long dev times this is a given really.

We’ve asked Square-Enix for some sort of comment on the above, so again until then, make of this what you will.

Yeah this is a major rumour.

Not only will it supposedly have a 2014 release date (yeah right) the PS4 will be released before tht or around same time...yeah right 2 rumours in one.

Could it be part of the supposed PS4 reveal later this month?
SE is part of Sony? Otherwise I dont see the relevance. However I think Sony aquired SE forgot tbh not sure.

They also state that Final Fantasy 15 and 16 are currently in development for next-gen formats. Given their long dev times this is a given really.

LMAO development? is that the right term.?....... -__-

Oh, wow, yes. Someone on NeoGAF I've never heard of freely coming out with this. I am sure he is worth listening. Protip: if you're going to listen to anyone on NeoGAF when it comes to being an insider in this kind of stuff, listen to Kagari. She's done an extensive multiparter preview write up of Lightning Returns for one that many "news" sites have cited.

Considering they have a stable engine structure for the current gen consoles, I honestly don't believe they will bother with the extra effort and money on adapting Versus - a game that was originally conceived for the PS2 - for next gen architecture with such a tiny user base by whenever Sony decides to release Orbis.

But I do like the idea of renaming Versus. May as well make it FFXV to dissociate it from FFXIII. So far I have not come across a single compelling argument against making this a numbered title.

I wonder if Lightning will be a guest character in the game Versus eventually turns out to be, haha...

In any case, let's hope this isn't just another baseless rumour to keep fans hoping.

I'm taking this with half a box of salt, but even then the prospects of it being true get me a little excited..

If the PS reveal on the 20th of this month is in fact the PS4 then I see very little chance of Versus still coming for PS3. It also raises a few eyebrows as to why we've hardly gotten any substantial info regarding the title. Were they purposely staying tight-lipped due to the PS4 reveal?

It's all smoke and mirrors at the moment but if this comes to fruition I'll be very happy. It makes perfect sense for Versus to be a PS4 title now, and it also pleases me if they do indeed drop the current title name and remove anything to do with FNC and the sorts like sharing the mythology. This game has far too much potential to be a mere spin-off of a failed (in my eyes) XIII series and FNC (Due to no Type-0 localization).

In all honesty during my 15 years of playing FF, Versus (XV?) is what's keeping my FF burners churning away. If it weren't for this title I'd have probably given up on the new games by now.

This is actually a very suiting rumour for Versus considering the development time. We have literally got nothing and the closest SE showed were just trailers which are completely old right now. Noctis in that dark room, and Stella having no vocal cords. Announced in 2006, Fans get all hyped thinking it is a ps3 game. Oh but then many many years later fans start getting pissed at SE for the lack of information and because SE always say to wait. It is no surprise if this would go on next gen playstation, but as of right now I am just going to think this is some guy thinking he knows all his stuff. Either that, or he is just really good at guessing like me. Square's response on this has me curious. "Square Enix do not comment on rumours"

XV(ah Versus) and XVI mentions?

That is pretty neat actually. Talking about future next gen games when a current gen one is still being demanded for. *sigh*

At any rate, I am just not going to believe this as much as I think it could eventually happen. It seems too good to be true, but it is a rumour and next gen will be shown this year. I do not know, but Square Enix were quick to comment and when I look at their comment it just makes it seem like they are irritated.

weren't these the same people that started the rumors of Versus going be changed to XV and also that Versus was cancelled last year?
Yeah I began to not trust any rumors about Versus..that or I just stopped caring all together... not sure which...

Clearly not true !

Versus has to come out after 300 odd cellphone games, FF 13 DLC and at least 6 more Final Fantasy XIII games going on about how fantastic and wonderful Lightning is !

Versus should be due around about 2
035. Don't worry guys because we'll have more games about Lightning to love and enjoy ! Yay ! I love love you Square- Enix ! Best company ever. :hmph:

It's times like this that my heart just wants for the late 90s again, eagerly anticipating the next solid title FF release, and not having to worry about waiting for the next 5 spin-off titles to be released before another half-baked proper title is finally released.

I've seen this guy post on Gfaqs too. I'll believe it when I see it. If he actually knows what he's talking about then he'll get credibility at that time - I see all this as him stirring things up for his own amusement.

I am hoping that they just bury FFXIII series once and for all, in spite of the insights that SE gave during XIII-2 ending.
A new title from SE concerning FF should be a stand-alone title, with new characters, new story, new game mechanics. I fail to understand how come FFXIII-2 sold so many copies if FFXIII was in my opinion the cheesiest FF ever released. (I am fault here, since i bought them, but I just dig FF).

I will maintain my flag of faith raised for a good title from SE for the next-gen platforms. I just hope that SE does not succumb to the mediocrity of their previous releases (FF related or not)

I would hope... That given all this time... Versus, or XV, or whatever it's gonna be, will be a truly amazing game. But I doubt it. :mokken:

This wouldn't shock me if it did happen. It's been talked about for a while now, eventually the game will have to come out. So I guess to make the eventual release even sweeter, why not release it as a main game. FFXV. It would be pretty cool IMO.

Because its still connected to Fabula Nova Crystallis subseries. Its better if FFXV be somethin completely unrelated to FNC

I don't think it being tied to FNC would make it a bad game. You get that sort of thing with films, where a film may be utter shit but then a sequel is made that is actually very awesome. It's perfectly possible for Square to make a really good game based off this sub-series. Perfectly possible. :mokken:

It's times like this I wish for the late 90's when people werent so blind to mobile gaming.

Thats not what im saying, im saying it shouldnt share the same mythology of a previous numbered game unless they share the same number or not have a number in its title at all.

About cellphone games, SE did a smart move to get involved in cellphone games. Why?
Well SE has a decent income from their thirdparty titles and sideprojects etc.

I read tht a recently released mobile game from japan made a lot of millions of yen per day because of microtransactions. It wasnt even a rpg. Its tht game where you have to switch symbols or gems to make them disappear only japanese style thus with dragons.

I played Rage of Bahamut for like 1.5 year and I myself have burned money lol.

SE is just a failure even at cellphone games, but its a smartmove nonetheless. Dont underestimate the massibe amount of ppl playing mobile games and even pay up for microtransactions. Massive revenue.
