Amano, Uematsu and Compile Heart developing Fairy Fencer F

Final Fantasy’s Yoshitaka Amano and Nobuo Uematsu are working with Compile Heart on a new PlayStation 3 exclusive RPG, it’s been revealed.

fairyfencer.jpg

Previously teased and reported on a few weeks ago as the “Galapagos RPG,” Fairy Fencer F has been revealed in this week’s Famitsu.
The game features Yoshitaka Amano, the man responsible for the artwork of Final Fantasy I-VI and the series’ distinctive logos, as a concept artist. He’s reunited with Nobuo Uematsu, who will score the game with The Earthbound Papas, his pretty awesome band. The team behind the Hyperdimension Neptunia games will handle the actual development duties.
Siliconera translates that Fairy Fencer F tells the story of a goddesses, gods and twisted royalty. Standard Japanese RPG Stuff. The battle system is said to be an evolution of the one from Neptunia, featuring mid-air combos and team attacks.
Nothing has been mentioned regarding a potential Western release, but the Neptunia titles have been bought over by Nippon Ichi in the past.

The game will be out in Japan later this year.

Fairy Fencer F detailed in Famitsu
Become a Fencer and wield your Fury.

The first game under Compile Heart’s new Galapagos RPG brand is Fairy Fencer F, a fantasy RPG for PlayStation 3 developed by Neptune Team, featuring concept art from Yoshitaka Amano, music from Nobuo Uematsu and the Earthbound Papas, and character design from Date A Live‘s Tsunako.
Famitsu this week has first details on the RPG. Find our summary below, courtesy of Sokuho@Hokanko.
Story
Long ago, wicked gods and goddesses quarreled, though somehow or another they disappeared somewhere. The time is the modern age. The weapons that remained from the quarrels are called “Furies” and those who wield them are called “Fencers.” Fang had just become a Fencer when he rescues an assaulted girl named Tiara, who is also a Fencer.
Characters

  • Fang (voiced by Ryota Oosaka) – The main character who accidentally became a Fencer.
  • Tiara (voiced by Kaori Ishihara) – A young girl with Gothic clothing and silver hair. In order to undo a goddess’ seal, she is collecting Furies.
  • Alyn (voiced by Rumi Ookubo) – She has shoulder length hair and wears a super short skirt. She’s another heroine, the saint that dwells within Fang’s Fury.
  • ??? – There is another female character with black hair, but her details are unknown.
Battle
You gain weapon points in battle to power up your Fury. And in battle, you can use combos and magic.
Graphics
In general, enemies are regular monsters like in Hyperdimension Neptunia. The graphics seem to have been improved, however.
Visit the game’s official teaser site here.
Interview
Outside of Fairy Fencer F, the magazine also sat down with Idea Factory president Shingo Kuwana and game development boss Norihisa Kochiwa. Here are a couple of interesting excerpts:

  • Kuwana: “We’re thinking about developing for PS Vita in the future.”
  • Kochiwa: “Since game development for PlayStation 4 is already underway, I want to make the marketplace firm. It’s not PlayStation 4′s specs but the dimensions of how you play that is different, so it’s about how to use our own expertise to make a splash there.”

UPDATE:

[h=1]First Fairy Fencer F Screenshots Look Kind Of Like Neptunia, But With A Fantasy Feel[/h] By Spencer . May 16, 2013 . 1:34am

The Neptunia team is hard at work on a big project called Fairy Fencer F. The game is built using Neptunia’s battle system as a foundation and Tsunako, the character artist from the Neptunia series, created characters for Fairy Fencer F. That’s probably why it feels familiar.

You won’t find any console mascots in Fairy Fencer F, though. Compile Heart designed Fairy Fencer F as a more traditional RPG. Screenshots of the game show Tiara, the girl with blue hair, in battle with Fang. The monsters look more ferocious than the horsebird in Neptunia. The four commands on the menu are: menu (triangle), wait (square), attack (circle), and defend (X).

Yoshitaka Amano created concept art for Fairy Fencer F. The game is slated for release on PlayStation 3 this year in Japan.

This seems intriguing. Amano and Uematsu together in one project called...FFF. I wonder who is making the game.

Compile Heart

The team behind the Hyperdimension Neptunia games will handle the actual development duties.

...oh. It's going to be shit then.

So it's probably going to be awful with cheap moe pandering and waifus? Or it might be different! Who knows?

Oh. Amano wants to draw cute girls.

Okay, okay. I'm sure if scans come out, it will look interesting, right?

Nope!

Soulless, creepy doll-eyed waifu material. Realistically, what else was I supposed to expect from a Compile Heart game catering exclusively to the Japanese audience?

Reading through the first post, I had hope for the game. I thought it sounded really cool. But then I saw the second post with the pics and I was just like :jeri: . The only good thing I can see about this is that the dude character kinda looks like Sora, and that this game might be able to give me my anime fix that I just can't seem to ever have ever at all. Meh....

Compile Heart did say the Galapagos brand was aimed purely at Japan and no one else (or rather people who enjoy that style of game) so it's not surprising. If there's one thing to be said about this, it's that they're sticking to their guns instead of trying to broaden appeal.
Fleur: The character designer is Tsunako (who works with the Neptunia team), not Amano.
