[17/01] Japan ranks their favorite female characters from the Final Fantasy series

The results for Japan’s female character vote is now in.


Much like the earlier male character poll which saw Zack (FFVII) as the over all winner, the fight for the top appears to have been fierce. Lightning came in at #1 , just narrowly beating out Aerith after taking what was seemingly an early runaway lead. Aerith and Yuna, however, were fighting for the top spot from the very beginning.


46 character names in total were posted by fans and the results – although not as detailed as the previous poll – reflect a general opinion of Japan’s Final Fantasy Forum using fans.


Those with duplicate rankings held the same amount of votes, and are thus counted as a tied ranking. Check out the full compiled list below. Note that not all 46 names are represented here, as characters with too few votes are not represented.

Lightning at number 1? Really? Still, at least Agrias came into the ratings, with her probably being relatively unknown compared with most of the others. She's one of my favourites :grin:
I've got to say that I'm surprised about Garnet's ranking too. Thought she'd be nearer the top. Also: Faris. Who saw her coming so high? Manly women must be popular nowadays :lew:
 
Lightning?? Really?? I do not believe this... SE probably paid whoever made the list to put Lightning at the top because this is bogus
 
Oh good. They'll be all over Lightning Returns like a rash. It might even convince Toriyama that Lightning is still popular enough to sustain yet another game with her after this one.

Yes, a boring character in a state of perpetual apathy with the depth of a playground puddle and despite the whole "defy destiny" theme in FFXIII, has been relegated to serving all these differents Gods and Goddesses for some inexplicable reason. But it's okay. She kicks arse. That's the most important thing, amirite?

Aerith and Yuna deserve higher spots. Lightning come on..I honestly think this is a big ass marketing scam as well.
 
yuna should definitely be number one as she is the greatest. lightning was shithouse mcgraw.

im disappointed that kuja didnt make it to the list :sad3:

The only reason why lightning is number 1, is due toher constantly being reminded to usthrouh half-baked sequels. If more sequels based on the other characters came out, we would be seeing less of how greatLightning is. even though we all know she's crap.

Yeah I smell a huge rat. Square- Enix clearly screwed the system so they can put Lightning on top. Don't believe this for a second. -__-
 
Lightning doesn't even fucking qualify for this ranking.

She has a bigger schlong than most of the male characters in FF anyway.

That's more a reflection on them than her :awesome:

I'm not surprised Lightning's on top since she's the face of SE at the moment. More importantly, I'm not a huge fan of Aerith or Yuna being where they are. Ashe should have ranked higher, along with Tifa and Garnet.

And Fang should be on here somewhere.

Yeah, I don't get why lightning is so loved, I mean, I like her but why is everyone so obsessed with her! anyway, Aerith def should have been number one, with Yuna at number 2. :ryan: whatever, though-- I heard Lightning just barely beat Aerith. it's cool that a character that's had such little screentime but has been around for 15-16 years is still so loved :ohoho:

why? because she doesn't have a love interest? or because she doesn't take anyone's crap? or is it because she's never a "damsel" and always a knight? girls can be powerful, too you know :hmph: just cuz she's strong and independent doesn't mean she "doesn't qualify" as a woman. :ffs:

I agree with everyone else who said this is some marketing tool or a complete sham. I don't see anyone slobbin' on Lightning, she's a very cheap ripoff of Cloud and at least Cloud had feelings and showed them unlike that heartless bitch. I'm sure they'll use this to LR's benefit though.

Nothing to do with love interests, nor does it have to do with how "powerful" she is as an individual. I just noted that Lightning gives a much more assertive air than most other male protagonists in FF, and as such I just compared her to them.

It was a tongue-in-cheek comment about a video game character, not a statement against strong women or girls.

Sorry if you got that flavor from my statement.
 
Some of the placements in this list surprised me, others did not. I was surprised at how high ranking some obscure characters were, and how the more well-known characters I expected to be in their places were farther down. But probably about half of the list was entirely predictable. Even as a FFXIII fan, I don't know that I'd say Lightning is my favorite female FF character, but it makes sense that she'd be at the top because her game(s) is(are) most recent, and SE has pushed her as an icon so hard. She's the first female FF character that comes to everyone's mind--there's no need to debate actual character when she has that going for her.

The one thing that makes me sad is seeing Ashe all the way down at 16. Not surprised, because I know how most people feel about XII, but personally she would have been way up there for me
 
Actually, looking at the list, I realise that there are very few female Final Fantasy characters that I actually like. I'd be hard pressed to come up with a top 10 if you forced me to. And really, there's nothing here worth being genuinely mad at because...okay, so what? I'm taking this as a joke - which it is, given all the joint rankings and the fact that you had to be a member of the (Japanese) official SE forums, I kind of wonder how many votes there actually were. Lightning being number 1 is the least shocking thing about this anyway.

I'm glad to see Ashe up there, as modestly placed as she is. I think it's a shame. There is so much more I can talk about for Ashe than I can for "Call me Light", and Ashe is significantly better written.

There is a good balance to her: Ashe's own fierce independence that helped play through her own survival and ordeals, but counterbalanced by a variety of vulnerabilities: grief, agitation for war blood, and eventually indecision: justified tit-for-tat, or turn the other face on the grounds of futility and perhaps morality after what Reddas tells her? There's quite a bit going in there that helps to flesh her out. I've always projected more empathy for her own plight, with the grief, the losses, the betrayals, the fiery passions for revenge, the subtle manipulation from the Occuria, and her own independent judgement near the end to take the course she deems fit, than I ever did for Lightning's. You don't see Ashe suddenly being elevated to this cartoony one-woman army goddess type who can single-handedly save an entire universe from near-certain apocalypse. You don't see Ashe adopting a new alias for a superficial reason that despite her realisation that it's stupid, indefinitely keeps the alias anyway.

Team Ashe is recruiting. We have Jammy Dodgers and crumpets.
