Final Fantasy 8: HD port announced for PC, first screens inside

Final-Fantasy-8-280x80.jpg

Final Fantasy 8 is getting the HD treatment on PC, developer Square-Enix has confirmed. The studio has released two images showing its new lick of paint.
Kotaku reports that the new edition has been slated for a Japan-only release at the moment but could be announced for the West in due time.
Two images have been released so far. Here’s an image of Squall in the doctor’s ward, and another of a battle scene.
Would you pick up the PC port if it heads west? Let us know below.

[h=1]Final Fantasy VIII Is Coming To PC With High Resolution Graphics[/h] By Spencer . May 17, 2013 . 11:02am

Square Enix announced they will release a PC version of Final Fantasy VIII, but it won’t be the same game released over a decade ago. Final Fantasy VIII for PC will have high resolution graphics, Famitsu reports.

The website also says if additional features other than the graphical upgrade are in the game or not is yet to be determined. The PC version mad the Chocobo World mini-RPG more accessible since you didn’t need the Japan-only PocketStation to play it. The monochrome mini-RPG powers up Boku’s attack and rewards players with extra items.

Ugh, I don't do PC gaming but I still wouldn't mind getting my hands on it.

Honestly I don't really see too much of a difference with the two images. I'm sure I'd get a better picture if this came out in the West and I got to play it. Would rather SE halt on HD projects and focus on current games, but whatevs :hmmm:

I'm really not that impressed. I'd probably play it if they did achivements that were actually interesting and not simply story/limit breaks like FF7 like collect all 110 Cards, find all the magazines ETC ETC.. You know, minigame stuff.... FF7 Achievements were lame :(

I'm not THAT bothered about achievements but for classic games they add new challenges. I've played these games so many times I want new stuff to do, if that makes sense.

The screenshots didn't really impress me either. HD? Hardly..

HD Crap is still crap, so brushing up old textures still look old.

Its mostly ok. I dont think its a bad thing. Back in the day things.looks really pixelated, in here i see really smooth edges. Overall not excited but i do find it to be ok news.

I would definitely pick it up, what with the current PC version being near impossible to play on modern systems without a million mods, and the lack of a PS1 memory card along with scratched discs. And I so do hate the PS1 emulators.

@Ohri-Jin, you do realise that if you are going to copy and paste, you don't have to copy and paste everything, right? If it's not Sal Romano's name plastered on the thread, it's Spencer's. :hmmm:

I will perhaps care a bit more if Square-Enix Japan has the good sense to realise that they can do good business on Steam or GOG. And without that DRM nonsense that plagued the FFVII PC re-release they put out on their own website.

lol I do that on purpose. Sal Romano stands out on Gematsu and I often read all the comments and he is also quite involved with their members. Spencer not really I think. VG247 has great editors too.

Im just crediting where I can. I cant copy paste VG247's articles in the same way the journalists are credited. For gematsu's articles I will remain doing this. Deal with it. :mokken:

FF8's HD port is kinda cool. Im sure it will re-release for the West as well.
I think SE is making preparations for Gaikai and thus they better be in a higher resolution.
Steam might get the re-releases who knows. Only if its worth it imo.

Nothing wrong with crediting one's sources, it's the ethical thing to do. In fact, more people online should learn to be as meticulous about it as Ohri-Jin here.

I will definitely pick this up if it comes with some added extras like Final Fantasy VII did. I do wish they would bring it to Steam though.

Why bring it to steam when they can limit you to 5 downloads and you have to repurchase? Not that I imagine that's a common problem anyway..

I wish they would, though.. I'd settle for decent achievements/challenges though..

i do not see a difference. i wish people would learn to show side by side comparisons. but i guess if these journalists do that then people would see that there really is no difference at all. :hmmm: i don't get why people would waste their money on these barely spruced up versions when we all know they'll remake all of the older ffs as soon as square enix wises up and realizes doing such a thing would save their company.

^Character models are smoother than they are in the initial release. There's not a whole lot they can do to the pre-rendered backgrounds, because that would involve them redoing most to all of the assets in the game. Cutscenes can be done better, though.

well if you need a side by side comparison there probably isnt much of a difference

some of the battle effects look updated, environments and character models look the same.

now that you mention it, i guess that the details of the model do look a little more articulate and smooth
