There are four contintents that comprise the land of Nova Chrysalia, one of them being the Dead Dunes — a vast desert region where Lightning will have to brave the elements, including sandstorms as she navigates through the terrain. The newest Jump has some imagery of the new area, which is filled with many ruins dotting the landscape. Lightning is able to slide down sandy dunes to get around.

Jump also reveals a new power of Lightning’s: Overclock. This ability is Lightning’s “ace in the hole” and consumes GP, a special kind of point system. This ability halts the movement of enemies. (Editor’s note: Similar to the 2006 Final Fantasy XIII trailer?)

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is still set to release this Fall.

I have found that IGN has placed the images that are shown in the magazine as proper images that are in game.

Here is the link, it is like the first 8 screenshots :) I will tell you what they are shaping up quite nicely!

Oh sweet! I always wanted to go tomb raiding as Lightning! The entire dead dunes reminds me of the Uncharted 3 desert. Her outfit is pretty hideous and this probably leads me to the conclusion that all the rest will be hideous also. Why is it hideous? The white and green looks really bad, we can see pretty much see the top part of her thong/underwear and her midriff is visible once again. The belt looks so out of place, and the choker is ugly.

That is supposed to be an explorer outfit? Why couldn't the entire shirt just be white and not half army green? That being said... her new lightspeed ability reminds me of climax from tales of legendia. It might prove to be useful in some really hard battles.

The Dunes “the land of new exploration”—a vast desert dotted with numerous ruins. Lightning can also slide downhill in these Dunes.

Why is Lightning all of a sudden pulling a Nathan Drake/Lara Croft?

I...what...why?

How on earth do these costumes get progressively worse? It has to be a gag in Nomura's office, because I can't see how anyone can hand this in with a straight face and believe that they put together something good.

And don't start retorting with a "it's Final Fantasy. They can wear what the fuck they want" as if I don't know or I've not considered that. You can design a decent fantasy character outfit design without looking like you changed from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde during the sketch halfway through.

Ack.

Looks almost like a PS2 shot. That looks bad.

EDIT: looks like that monster is helping her. Gotta catch 'em all, again?

Otherwise, desert looks alright for what it is. But this game is giving me Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Journey vibes now. It's like an eclectic mix of multiple personality disorders.

...you guys are making too much of a big deal out of the costume... I have seen far worse in FF games...

but hey glad after 3 games we are finally figuring out how many contintents there are in this planet of FFXIII....

Also if the monsters are helping her my guess it is the XIII-2 thing again

The monster looks like it's just facing another way. If I recall correctly Light can move however she wants around the battlefield. If not then ah well.

I happen to like the costume better than most of her recent garb. It looks better than the default costume I saw in the trailer and not all exaggerated with sunglasses, and mecha shields, and "goddess armor". It just looks simple.

The time thing seems pretty interesting. It could be a really cool tactic to use during gameplay. Other than that I'm still wondering what sort of story they're trying to weave out of all this.

Ok....the outfit is bad, and you can tell by how inconsistnt it is. In fact this game just SCREAMS inconsistency in style. The hate for the outfits is strong because the garb is relevant to the gameplay. But Lightning just looks like utter crap, regardless of what she wears. Outfits also tell what kind of person they are and Lightning doesnt appear to be the trendy type. So even if its the funnest thing you played, you will still say its out place for an RPG.

Ok this game isnt impressing me, already the story just says "Majora's Mask Wannabe mixed with Final fantasy X" it shows little obstacles, in fact it looks like their thee just to be an extra.

Doesnt all of this look like a bunch of extra to cover up how bad the essentials are there.

Word of mouth says that the creature responsible for the costumes is in fact the guy behind FFIX's character designs (don't have the name on me), not Nomura.

Say what you want about FFIX's designs, but they exuded charm and character. Even Kuja to an extent. These ones don't even have that going for them. It's like Nomura was running a class inside SE Japan HQ, training others to draw in his style. Or he was just delegating it and/or dictating it to someone else to do the designing.

Lightning Returns: Official ‘Dead Dunes’ description and Shop Screenshots!

The Lightning Returns website updated today with a few new screenshots in addition to the Dead Dunes stuff we got to see the other evening. The official description of the Dead Dunes has been added as well, and it looks there’s a bit more information in there than we originally got from the magazine. It’s not much, but hopefully it should tide you all over until we manage to get some more!

The Dead Dunes: A lifeless desert within which rests a holy relic.
This region is covered with endless desert sands as far as the eye can see. Within it can be found the shanties which form a base for treasure hunters seeking their fortune in the arid wilderness, as well as ancient ruins said to conceal a divine treasure. Many monsters with a character unique to the area appear in this region, such as the sand swimming fiends of the open desert and the undead horrors that lurk within the ruins.

There are also, as mentioned above, screenshots of the shops. For some reason the English websites lists it as ‘Trading’, but rest assured you have money to throw around and are not limited to trading items for abilities. The two NPCs shown appear to be the same guy though, so it’s possible that they’re still placeholders. The Item Shop looks like it’s in Luxerion for sure, but the Spell Shop shown could either be there or in the little town at the Dead Dunes Oasis.

HQ Lightning Returns VJump scans

Well, looks like we’ve got some new stuff for you! Clearer scans of the Jump article pertaining to Lightning Returns’ “Dead Dunes” have surfaced, and it looks like there are some new screenshots contained within them. We’ll have clearer versions of those too the moment we can get our hands on them, but for now enjoy these! If you can help with translation, drop a line by my twitter here.

EDIT: Even larger versions of the scans are now available, and we’re replaced the older ones with them! You can actually see the shop UI mentioned below now, and get a clearer view of things like Bhunivelze in the background.

Writer’s Thoughts: There appears to be some kind of Sand Sahagin in one of the screens we don’t have a larger version of, leaping out of the dunes to attack Lightning. On the other page, the small box at the top contains some sort of shop with a UI we haven’t seen yet; While we have no solid evidence at the moment, it’s possible that this is our first look at the game’s cafes.

Lightning Returns screenshots from Famitsu’s website!

The Famitsu website uploaded some of the screenshots that were present in the VJump article this week, and we have them here for you! They’re still pretty fuzzy and they are watermarked, but we’re bringing them to you just the same. You can now clearly see Bhunivelze in the sky, and there’s another look at Lightning’s Dark Muse outfit. The shop mentioned in a previous article is now almost certainly a cafe, where you pay different amounts of money to recover a percentage of your HP. Enjoy!

UPDATE: Here are some preliminary translations of the Famitsu website captions:

Lightning is in contact with a member of a thieves guild – their leader seems to have heard of Lightning. This leader is someone who has appeared in the series and someone who Lightning probably knows.
The desert that stretches outside the oasis is a danger zone. Here, exploration will take place across the desert.
In the Dead Dunes, you can undertake quests from the inhabitants of the oasis. Within the oasis you can chat to the inhabitants and listen to their stories, as well as buy items from the shops.
Items used for battle restoration can be found in treasure chests, as well as purchased through shops in town. Stamina can be restored by visiting an inn or even eating a meal.

I am going to say from the new batch of screens that I am looking forward to the game, I think it is shaping up quite well but until the game is in my hands I can't say anything negative about it nor will I cause I have belief it will be the best out of the FFXIII saga so far (Aint saying much I know but we will see).

Ah, I see.

So when they say this game will have the most shops in a FF game (it was something like that), they mean what look like stalls essentially. Like a street vendor. You can't really wander inside to have a look around. Not even the inns. And here I was picturing the FFXII shops.

Oh well, minor gripe. Sure, it's shaping up to be the best of the three games (albeit probably the worst of the three in technical terms), but that's not exactly setting the bar high.

/likely leader of a thieves guild? Oh my God! Who could this nefarious person in charge of a rag-tag group of people be? Oh, right. Snow. Probably. Just a noble guess.
