Every artist "steals" a little, whether they realize it or not. For instance, we talk about how some musician was "influenced" by music they grew up with, even if sometimes that influence consists of outright stealing and/or barely remixing a classic. That's just the way it works.
But sometimes, it's even more blatant than that. In fact, some of the most successful musical acts in history based huge chunks of their careers entirely on plagiarism.

Somewhat disappointed. What little respect I had left for Metallica is gone now.

Good musicians borrow, great musicians steal! I've never let a bit of plagiarism ruin my appreciation for an artist. My favourite Led Zeppelin album is and always will be the 2 first ones, no matter how many people they ripped off :wacky:

Normally I wouldn't care. But it's funny how Metallica did all that bitching and moaning about Napster when they're stealing music as well.

I really don't care at all if people steal other people's music. That's their own problem and they can sort of the issues with the people they stole from. If I like to listen to it, I don't care who wrote it first. :lew:

Well Metallica have also stated on several occasions that they are fans of Beatallica (a band that mixes Beatles songs and Metallica songs) and even offered them legal assistance when Sony came after them for using the Beatles catalogue. A situation which is probably more comparable to the situation above than the Napster case.

I do agree that it is funny though. James Hetfield was also once interviewed wearing unauthorized Witchfinder General merchandise :wacky:

disappointing and generally pish article.

specifically the deep purple part. they heard something, thought it was good and then gave it a completely different feel, besides the fact that thats probably not all the jazz tune consists of...how is that stealing?

also mr webber isnt a band.

pish article.

And the whole song of smoke on the water isn't made of that riff as well. So what's your point? If you made a signature and someone took the background and just put in a different render and got credit for it, you'd be pissed.

It was just meant as a somewhat amusing thread, only one I really lost respect for was Metallica.
