I was wondering how many versions of the poem "LOVELESS" do exist actually. For those who do not know "LOVELESS" is the poem Genesis quotes whenever he encountes Zack. I just want to know which one do you think is more accurate.

Here's the first version most commonly seen:

LOVELESS

First Version

Prologue (Poem)
When the war of the beasts brings about the world’s end
The goddess descends from the sky
Wings of light and dark spread afar
She guides us to bliss, her gift everlasting

Act I (Poem)
Infinite in mystery is the gift of the goddess
We seek it thus, and take to the sky
Ripples form on the water’s surface
The wandering soul knows no rest.

Act II (Poem)
There is no hate, only joy
For you are beloved by the goddess
Hero of the dawn, Healer of worlds

Dreams of the morrow hath the shattered soul
Pride is lost
Wings stripped away, the end is nigh

Act III (Poem)
My friend, do you fly away now?
To a world that abhors you and I?
All that awaits you is a somber morrow
No matter where the winds may blow

My friend, your desire
Is the bringer of life, the gift of the goddess

Even if the morrow is barren of promises
Nothing shall forestall my return

Act IV (Poem)
My friend, the fates are cruel
There are no dreams, no honor remains
The arrow has left the bow of the goddess

My soul, corrupted by vengeance
Hath endured torment, to find the end of the journey
In my own salvation
And your eternal slumber

Legend shall speak
Of sacrifice at world’s end
The wind sails over the water’s surface
Quietly, but surely

Act V (Poem-By Genesis)
Even if the morrow is barren of promises
Nothing shall forestall my return
To become the dew that quenches the land
To spare the sands, the seas, the skies
I offer thee this silent sacrifice

LOVELESS

First Version

Prologue (Poem)

Prologue (Interpreted)
When the war of the beasts brings about the world’s end
The goddess descends from the sky

Wings of light and dark spread afar
She guides us to bliss, her gift everlasting

Act I (Interpreted)
The infinite mystery
The gift of the goddess is what the three men seek
But their fates are scattered by war

One is taken captured, one flies away
And the last becomes a hero

But the three are still bound by a solemn oath
To seek the answer together, once again

Act II (Interpreted)
Though the prisoner escapes, he is gravely wounded
His life is saved, however
By a woman of the opposing nation

He begins a life of seclusion with her
Which seems to hold the promise of eternal bliss

But as happiness grows, so does guilt
Of not fulfilling the oath to his friends

Act III (Interpreted)
As the war sends the world hurtling towards destruction
The prisoner departs with his newfound love
And embarks on a new journey

He is guided by hope that the gift will bring bliss
And the oath that he swore to his friends

Though no oath is shared between the lovers
In their hearts they know they will meet again

Act IV (Poem)
My friend, the fates are cruel
There are no dreams, no honor remains
The arrow has left the bow of the goddess

My soul, corrupted by vengeance
Hath endured torment, to find the end of the journey
In my own salvation
And your eternal slumber

Here's another version:

Second Version

The Prologue:
When the war of the beasts brings about the world's end,
The goddess descends from the sky

Wings of light and dark spread afar,
She guides us to bliss, her gift everlasting...

Act I:

Infinite in mystery is the gift of the goddess
We seek it thus, and take to the sky.
Ripples form on the water's surface
The wandering soul knows no rest.

Act II:

My Friend, your desire
Is the bringer of life, the gift of the goddess.

Legend shall speak of sacrifice at worlds end.
The wind sails over the water's surface
Quietly, but surely...

Act IV (III):

There is no hate, only joy
For you are beloved by the goddess.
Hero of the Dawn, Healer of Worlds.

Three friends go into battle
One is captured,
One flies away,
the one that is left becomes a hero.
If we were to enact it,
would I be the one to play the hero,
Or would You?
Indeed
After all, your glory should have been mine.

My Friend, the fates are cruel
There are no dreams, no honour remains.
The arrow has left the bow of the goddess.

My Soul corrupted by vengeance,
Hath endured torment,
To find the end of the journey in my own salvation.
And Your eternal slumber.

Now what I want most...
is the 'Gift of the Goddess'...

It drives me up the fucking wall with all of these 'versions' of it - but I suppose that it's to symbolize the fact that it is indeed an epic poem and most likely very old (I'm guessing here) so it leaves different versions, different translations - and lots of confusion.

But yeah the 3rd one sounds more 'complete' and more comprehensible but I need to mention something:

FIRST INTERPRETED VERSION
Act II (Interpreted)

Though the prisoner escapes, he is gravely wounded
His life is saved, however
By a woman of the opposing nation

He begins a life of seclusion with her
Which seems to hold the promise of eternal bliss

But as happiness grows, so does guilt
Of not fulfilling the oath to his friends
I can easily interpret this 'woman from the opposing nation' as Aerith (Ancient) vs. Zack being with Shin-Ra.

Why is it not in the other versions since I distinctly remember reading it near the end of the game? (Most likely it could be the cause of 'not fulfilling the oath to his friends', like Angeal)

Possibly because most of the versions focus on the first three acts. Some parts are skipped although Genesis somehow manages to assemble Loveless due to his deep investigation.

The woman from the opposing nation -> Aerith
-She is the last of the Ancient a race that fought Jenova.
-She fell in love with Zack and aid him in most of the game.

The man, or the friend who left without fulfilling his oath-> First was Angeal, albeit he was replaced by Zack after his death.
-Zack has Jenova cells inside of him, hence he is of the opposing nation since Aerith and her race were enemies of Jenova.

What has me confused is this "oath". What is the oath being made?

Zack made an 'oath' to Shin-ra by becoming part of their military, but there was no spoken 'oath' between him and Aerith but it was honored just the same.

After thought:

If in a metaphorical sense, Zack and Aerith are implied... what if those three heroes are NOT what Genesis had in mind but they were someone else?

It could be a possibility that those three heroes were not Angeal, Sephiroth and Genesis. Yet much of what is written speaks of what is happening and Genesis just tried to find the meaning of all the tragedies surrounding him in Loveless. Or perhaps, he was too obsessed with Loveless that he wished to enact it at all cost.

The oath could be "protect your honor" and your comrades, since Angeal was much like a guardian that kept Genesis and Sephiroth from hurting and destroying each other.

but genesis have secret about the loveless and his background that was i feel about his last word to zack when zack eat a dumb apple

:bounce:He begins a life of seclusion with her
Which seems to hold the promise of eternal bliss

zack with arith were in love wich is also called eternal bliss

But as happiness grows, so does guilt
Of not fulfilling the oath to his friends

colud said he would live both zacks and his life and in the film he was some what down and said im suposto be liveing both our lives but i cant so thers the gulity dout

I love this topic. LOVELESS is one of the more creative parts of CC. Reading it the first time was a sure mystery so I replayed the game and understood the meanings behind the poetry. Great topic mate!

The line: "The wind sails over the water's surface, quietly, but surely," can be said to have something to do with the Gift of the Goddess. Genesis interprets the water's surface to be the lifestream, perhaps he already knows of his own downfall at the end of Crisis Core. He knows he will be healed by the "gift," but in what context he is unsure.

I always did wonder what exactly the gift of the goddess is. I had ideas that it might be the healing of Genesis' deterioration. But now I think it's beyond an opinion.

I also thought that the gift of the goddess was the thing that would heal Genesis but i think its something more metaphoric I'm not to sure so I'm gonna go play CC again and try and get my head around loveless more. :)

it is jenover if u all remember it fell from the sky the gift of the godess is the j cells in everyone of solder hao
