Of all the books that you've read which one do you think is the best/favourite?
Include your reasons and explain about the story.

I think that the best book I've read so far was "Bard". I read it some years ago. It's a book for children (from 8-12 years), very well done.
The story is about life in a dog's point of view. It teaches many different things you might have never heard of before.
It left me breathless. The story will always be in my heart.

My best book is.........................

Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

I don't know why, but i was simply fascinated by the strategies involved in this period of Chinese history, where strategies from the Art of War were applied constantly.

The exploits of Zhu Ge Liang AKA Kong Ming always interest me. So much that i read it to an extent i literally memorized most of it.. (In general..)

Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille.

A gold mine of comical debauchery. The plot, if you can call it that, revolves around the sexual escapades of two teenagers in France during the twenties. White, ovular, semi-fluid objects, namely eggs, eyes, and peeled bulls testicles, are an overarching theme, and all enter into various orifices at one point or another. Ends with the most magnificently horrifying act of blasphemy I've ever experienced.

While it does amuse me, it also leads me to question just what's acceptable in the pursuit of happiness, and indeed, what exactly happiness is.

I'm a huge fan of Chuck Palahniuk (nihilism and all that) and my favorite book of all time has got to be Rant.

I mean, just that story and twist and characters and way it was written all coming together under a unique style of "fictional verbal biography."

As a film student, I'd love to adapt it and make it into a movie.

The "His Dark Materials" and "Abhorsen" trilogies are both incredible as well.

I don't really read books(even though I'm trying)but does Harry Potter count?
I might have not finished reading it but I like the Story of Dr.Frankenstein it has to do with the "nature vs nurture" thing and I better finish it.

Someone mentioned Romance of the Three Kingdoms,I'd like to read that but don't know where to find it,isn't it also a game?Although I've played Dynasty Warriors which is based on that.

The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. Vivid language as well as a really evil old man who creates sentient clones so that he can use their organs to live longer. Great for anybody from 10 to 20 years old.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.
Not so much for the story (which is quite uneventful, but still very influencial) but just because the actual prose is the best I've come across. It does get a little lenghty with the inner monologues, but damn... that's some beautiful use of language. It's especially amazing because his English is not his first language (he alsor writes in Russian as well), yet he far surpasses many English-speaking authors. This is probably the only book where I can just pick a random page, and just read.

In terms of pure plot... I prefer children's literature. I like things like Harry Potter, Narnia and His Dark Materials. LOTR is on par with those because of its detail and creativity, despite my qualms with the way it was written.

Favourite book? Hmmm...I am very fond of the Dragonlance Chronicles. It's a fantastic fantasy novel, and I thoroughly enjoy it. It's got what you expect in a Fantasy novel, and I have like...many more books after Chronicles, but I've yet to read them haha!

the best book a have ever read is Hiperion by Den Simons. the way he writes is exelent and the story is beside sf very philosoficall, its a bout the time far in the future where people left our planet, the political structure of the book is a masterpiece, and the main theme is well awsome:P i recomend it to all who likes space adventures and exelent storyline

Gone with the Wind is amazing,I love the main character and the descriptions of that particular event of america's history
100 years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is also incredible and heartbreaking, a true epic
the Catcher in a Rye by JD Salinger is another one of my favorites, specially for Holden Cauldfield the main character.

Left Behind. No, it's.....Dante's Divine Comedy
, no.
Uhhh, The Odyssey, no. Lord of The Rings, no wait! The Hobbit.

Ughh....Ahhg....eek...ARGG...ALEX!

Never mind, it's
the Divine Comedy.

I just love his description of the scenery in the different levels of Hell. How he spoke was so, so...poetic.
The descriptions of the
Eighth Circle are so scary.

How the sinners are being torn apart by the sword-wielding demon
s, then to have their bodies healed only so they can suffer through it again.

And in the ninth circle, how the sinners that are traitors to their kindred
are up to their necks with ice.
*shivers*
Yea, I think that's a great book.

That may have to do with the fact that's it's actually a very long poem :monster:

If the OP meant books as in novels, then I'm not sure The Divine Comedy or The Odyssey would technically count o_O
but eh. If in a book, it's a book I guess.

LOTR + The Hobbit are definitely great. Though as I said, I do have my qualms with the way Tolkein writes sometimes. I find it a little frustrating when the epic battle scenes don't get as much description time as say... walking up a hill. It seriously makes me want to skip large chunks of the book, and I hate doing that. I like to digest every word. Which is why, in terms droolworthy language, Vladimir Nabokov takes the freaking cake :monster:

Also at Cloti - I love Gone with the Wind and The Catcher in the Rye. In fact, they are two of my favourites.[/color]

My favorite book in the world, is The Mists Of Avalon. I feel a bit bad, that no-one my age seems to know about it. It seems that only the 'adults' know of it's existence. I also learned there was a movie made to it. o_O Still haven't got around to seeing it, unfortunately.

I also loved the book "Funny Boy" and "Running With Scissors". RWS came out with a lovely movie to go along with it, too.

I would have to say this is one of the hardest decisions I am faced with(at this current moment). For a very avid reader, and enjoying almost any genre of writing, besides maybe romance novels. I think I can narrow it down to a few.

My first and all time favorite would have to Wizards First Rule by Terry Goodkind. Its the first book in the Sword of Truth series and frankly its the book that got to love reading as much as I do. The way he writes it grips you and makes feel like your right there in the story.

I guess my runner up would definitely have to be the Lord of the Rings. While the first time I read the books it was a little hard to get through them, mostly because of the way Tolkien writes, but the second time I was a little older and I was able to appreciate the books in the way he intended them.

Wow this is a hard question.

I have enjoyed a large number of books, I have so many favourites so I guess I will have to judge based on the one that affected me the most. Some books are really entertaining, but it I think the ones that really make me think or affect me beyond words are the best that I have read. So in answer to that I would have to say the best book I have ever read is 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck, it is to put it simply an amazing book. I am very thankful to my grade 10 english teacher for making me read it or I would never have considered it.

Anne McCaffry's Pern series. The series is very detailed and makes you feel like you are actually there. Also the books show a completely new world and how it is set up and ran.

The best book I've ever read so far is the novel Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. The story is so cool. After reading the first five chapters, it's like I want to run away from home too! It's like a modern day adventure, even though it doesn't have any sword or gun fights but it has gore in it. Great story by Haruki Murakami also known as the creator of the Wind up Bird Chronicles.

Best book eh? Well that'd hafta be The Penultimate Peril by Lemony Snicket, I love that book, best of the series, His writing only gets better as the series grows too ^^

Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Simply the most beautiful book I have ever read. I would suggest it to anyone, I loved that book so much.

Also The Immortals Series by Tamora Pierce. It's actually a series that has jsut stuck as a favourite since 5th grade, I have no clue why but it has. I love that series :)

I'm not into reading too much but from the books i've read, my favourite is Eragon - Christopher Paolini.
Eragon is about a boy who is hunting when he falls upon an egg in the woods. He then takes care of the egg and it becomes a dragon. He then has to escape from the grasps of evil that want to take the dragon, seeing as its one of the last.

I really enjoyed this book because the characters were great, and the plot just had me wanting to read more.
