In This Life

It's a beautiful day. The weather's cool and sunny. There's a gentle breeze. The streets are busy as usual. The country is peaceful under the benevolent rule of the great ruler, His Majesty, the Emperor Kei. Monsters are kept well outside the city gates. Neighboring cities are mostly at peace with this country, Byakko.

Can things be any better?

There are guilds throughout the city for virtually any occupation one can imagine. There are always something to do in the city, always something fun to join in.

Quite a beautiful place isn't it? Come on, get a life already!

TIPSYNARUTO

Name:
Zhang Yue Fei (Fei is her used name)

Gender:
Female

Age:
22

Race:
Human

Job:
White Tiger Division Lion General Guard (Third Rank officer out of 9 levels)

Appearance:
Fei is one who exudes elegance and grace. She was graced with a tall stature and a fine figure which she is not too shy in flaunting. Similarly, her face is like a work of art, praised by many to be extremely beautiful with the air of nobility, but not as a traditional sense of beauty.
People revel in her appearance, but are somewhat intimidated by her air and presence of a warrior and defiance and lack of a humble and soft nature of an aristocratic girl.

Like most of the people that live in Byakka, her hair is a very dark brown, almost black and like most females of ehr class, left very long. Fei's hair when left loose reaches and spools on the floor. Fortunately, Fei has her her done up in a slight ponytail which pulls it up enough to reach just before her ankle.

Fei's clothing are somewhat flamboyant and shows her defiance of following traditional principles. It is a traditional one piece robe design with waist belt, but with a few fundamental difference. It is rich in green and gold with lots of intricate designs embroidered on it. It has a golden collar that runs the edges of her collar all the way down the front of her dress where it crosses. At the shoulder she has a small red hanging items with yellow tassels at the end on each side. The sleeves open up wide past the elbow and has a swirling dragon and cloud design using green with the sleeves bottom edges tinged in orange. The lower "dress" is long, touching the floor. Similar to the sleeves, the dress has a richer green before becoming lighter near the base with a tinge of orange. At the base, there is a light flower pattern design that runs the whole dress.

The most odd thing about the dress is the breast covers/ under bodice. Fei is not afraid to show a bit of skin, as she does often wear her dress with her shoulders bare. However, she does not bare it all or risk it, so she commissioned a bodice that is presentable along with her dress. As a result, it is firm and solid, made with typical green with gold embroidery and covers her breasts. Granted that she is more open, she does not want to shame her family, so her bodice is a back up. When she wears her dress in a way that reveal her shoulder, she does not open up her chest area and is kept closed, only showing her shoulders collarbone area and the nape and the front equivalent.

Around her waist is a chinese cloth belt. It is in two layers. The base is gold with a red edge. It has phoenix embroidery in a deeper yellow colour. At the back, it is longer than the front, reaching her buttocks in a spade V. Underneath it is a long, very dark green piece of clothing that has light green, almost white dragon and cloud design similar to the sleeves. It is long and not too wide with it reaching just below the hem of her dress. It similarly ends in a fat V with a large yellow tassel hanging. Framing the black cloth are three jade bead chain with yellow tassels at the end on each side These reach halfway down her calves. The waist belt on top is a bit more normal, being black and small. It serves to hold the entire dress closed along with the golden belt and the red rope ornament. It is not too wide as the golden belt underneath peaks out at the top and the bottom when looking at her from the front. The red rope ornament is tied around on top of her belts a few times before being tied at the back in a bow with a jade talisman hanging with a red tassel.

Her head ornament is similarly flashy. it consist of a dragon perched on a thin, black, lacquered ornament stand. This sits on a small round golden stand that is held in place as Fei loops her hair into the small cap and out the back with her ponytail and set in place with three long golden pins at the sides, and longer one from the back downwards to the front diagonally down like two horns, one on each sode. Along the back of these two longer pins are three golden tassels which hang from three close separate jewel of emerald, ruby and quartz. Connected to the rear of the cap are several slim golden chains that are used to bundle her hair halfway down her hair, together as to not let it fly around. They are rather long and as a result, the remaining length hang along with her hair, just shorter at the tip of the weighted golden tassels on the end. To top of her extravagant outfit, she has a white scarf draped over her arms and behind her back.

While hardly seen due to her dress, she wears a traditional chinese female shoe that is dark green for primary and white for secondary colour as well as the pompom.

As a female, accessories are a necessary. For her head, her headpiece and pins are enough. Her ears have two golden earrings (minus the black things). On her neck is a jade dragon pendant (10cm) on a golden chain whilst on her wrist, she has a jade bracelet on each hand as wells two other slim golden bracelets plus two jade rings on different fingers on each hand.

When on the job that require her to go a bit less obvious, such as White Tiger Guards job, she would wear a helm with a moveable faceplate. It is a rather open helm, with the top part of her head uncovered for her head ornament. Along the top are metal feathers for decoration. It is green in base with gold as secondary with silver as the round decorations at the ear. The helm covers the side of her head, the ears with two small frames next to her face. A larger round pulge protect her forehead and serves as the slot where the moveable faceplate rest. The faceplate is similar in appearance as the top where it hides. In fact, its made so that it appears as if the top part continues down. It covers down to her lips, making her faceless.

With her always is her 45 cm Kiseru pipe. It's main body, the actual pipe is warm gold while an emerald green jade body in the middle with golden flower swirls. On her waist is her pipe lit, a small waist bag of light brown leather holding the ash collector and the multiple herbs she smokes.

Personality:
Fei has, as with most aristocrats, a slightly snobby and haughty disposition. Although it isnt over bearing, she can be a bit demanding and blunt at times. She is rather vain and takes very good care of her appearance. She is proud of her lineage and her position and holds herself in an equal manner that would not disgrace her position, bar her taste in clothes. What differentiates her from spoilt princess brats is that she is hard and headstrong, but also insightful and responsible, to the point of being an elegant and feminine tomboy (if that makes sense). She could do anything boys do and not succumb to social stereotypes. When it comes to it, she would do her job right and correctly the first time and would not depend on people easily.

For friends, she acts rather Tsundere-ish. She would show distaste and make excuses to hide embarrassment. While she can talk normally, she finds herself unable to show weaker feelings such as excitement, joy, embarrassment and last of all, love.

Fighting Style:
The Zhang Martial Arts style is wide and diverse, but Fei concentrates on the more graceful and elegant style. With her jian, Fei fights mostly with thrusts, slices and stabs rather than straight out chopping. Her blade is different from most jian in that it is thicker and more stiff, which does allow chopping, Fei does not do so often. Fast strikes to critical areas is her specialty. She is also capable of magic of very high quality as well as shooting, though she can't say that she likes it to a too high degree. In fact, Fei has a distaste of it as it creates smoke that Fei believes to be dirty and could mar beauty if it flew close. Therefore, she would shoot as little as possible, and when shooting makes sure she only have to shoot once, hence her accuracy. When shooting, she would often have her arms outstretched as far as possible and block one of her ears as well as distancing her head from the hammer a such as possible.

In addition to the swordsmanship and shooting, Fei is also very adept with Fire element magic. She is an Archmagi, right underneath the Warlock. She is so skilled to the point where she is even highly respected amongst her Archmagi colleagues, ranking up in the top echelon.

Weapon:

Jian: A family heirloom, this jian has seen its fair share of battles, but has retained its keen edge and its aesthetic beauty as if just straight from the forge. At its pommel is a decorated phoenix head while down its length, it has a white edge, a dark metallic gray body with golden designs along with an equally decorative red sheath

Pistol: The first of her guns. Not her most loved possessions, Fei was given this pistol as a gift. As required by manners, she accepted it and carries it around in a very low slung right holster that hangs off her waist belt. It hangs from her waist belt all the way down to the side of her buttocks in a vertical position with a slight forward slant. it is a bit long at around 35 cm long and is a tri-barreled, cocked and changed barrel every time the hammer is pulled back. To reload, it is break open action with minie ball-like cartridges.

Blunderbuss #2 #3: Similarly like her pistol, Fei was given the blunderbuss. In fact, two of them. Due to its number, she is unable to carry it around always on her body. Instead, they are a pre emptive weapon. She has one or two of her lady-in-waiting carry its case with her ammo, in which she would take it off her, fire and get her to reload, then repeat. It is more a battlefield weapon in which she has soldiers protecting her. If she chooses just one of them, then she can carry it around without her lady-in-waiting, though it has to be slung across her bag or on her shoulder. Again, it is a triple revolving chamber gun with three paper shotgun cartridge.

History:
Fei is a minor royal. She has a loose blood relation to the throne, but it is small enough that they would not expect too much liberties and privileges. Instead, the little privilege the Zhang family got, they exploited. Fei's family were given low officers position as a grace to their blood. Through this, her ancestors worked hard and fiercely in the army, and within two generations, her great grandparents made general, which is where their power stems from. From there, her grandfather, father, uncles and siblings all became high army officials and guards and it was expected.

Fei followed in the family tradition. Her seven brothers and five sisters were either within the guards or married off respectfully. Fei had the option to marry into better royalty, but instead, went into the guards. Her pride on her freedom and independence did not quite allow her to become a quiet wife doll. Rather than going through her family's influence, Fei went up from the bottom, starting at the Orange Tiger Division and clawing her way up through tough competition before finally, making her family proud by being accepted into the White Tiger Division.

Name:
Huang Renka

Gender:
Female

Age:
Unknown. Appears early thirties, but estimated to be at least over 65

Race:
Human

Job:
Fire Warlock

Appearance:
One look and any one can tell where Fei get's her extravagancy from. Renka wears similarly
, if not more, flamboyant clothing like her apprentice. A good deal of her habits also seemed to have rubbed off as well. Her appearance defies her age, looking rather youthful and ageless, giving her a handsomeness and rather attractive feature.

Renka is pale. Verily so. Almost like a ghost. Her skin has the slightest hue of pink. That may have been attributed to her constantly being in her sprawling house in daytime, hardly ever going out and her generally liking the night. However, her appearance compliments her greatly. She has a rather complacent and relaxed face that appear very knowledgeable, which does not change too much or go into extreme emotional change. She stands at a staggering 180cm tall with a thin, lithe figure and long and slender limbs with buxom chest.

Her hair is also very, very long, Even when hoisted in a very complex manner, it is just barely off the ground, even with her platform princess shoes. Her side burns flow low down to her thighs while the back of her hair is tied in one large ornamental loop with several more smaller, intricate ones inside, before it is looped upwards inside these loops and splayed down like a waterfall. The front is cut in a princess bob fashion, with a straight cut front fringe. Renka's eyes are set in a permanent relaxed state, seemingly musing and is a nice light browny-red colour. Similarly, Renka's lips have a sage-like, all knowing smile to it, decorated with a light pink rogue.

Her taste in clothing is also somewhat gaudy. As standard, she wears a lighter, red inner robe with a more extravagant white one outside. She wears a similar bodice as Fei, except all red, that acts as a fail safe from exposure. However, due to her powers as a Warlock, she has a somewhat legit excuse for her to constantly bare open her robes. The sleeves are incredibly wide as is the base near the leg. The inner red robe is a mix shade of red. A crimson colour acts as its base, while near the hems of the robe, at the sleeves and the edges, she has patterns of wafting smoke and cloud made with differing shades of red. This robe is tied closed with a rather complex set of wraps. The first is a large purple cloth that has triangle patterns near the end. This is wrapped several times around her waist before being tied at the front in several large hanging parts. On top of that, is a thinner red cloth that has golden edge near the end with bells running along the shorter side. This is tied at the front like the purple belt and hangs with four pieces before a golden waist rope is tied over the two cloth and tied in a fancy knot at the front. The Red cloth strips that hang are underneath the purple one, but point downwards while the purple on arches upward and over like a n. Over this, she wears a large, white robe that has similarly wide sleeve ends. The robe is bade white with very light gray wing outlines. Along the sleeves, it is in made to appear to be actually like feathers on a wing. This is not tied by anything but a single thick thread near the middle. Her shoes are similar to the one Fei wears, except her main colour is white with red as secondary. It is much higher than Fei's, throwing her into almost 186-7cm tall.

On her head, her ornament is like red spikes, slaying out in different direction in an arc on her head. It is stuck on the top, in front of the tied hair at the back. The red spikes V backwards in an oblique angle and the further most side ones point slanted downward as if like the rays of a sun. These ones are rather long, almost reaching the width of her shoulders. Along the two antler spikes that are longer than the rest near the op of her ears, she has two long red tassels that reach her waist, which has bells attached in a bunch in four places. One where the tassels hang from the ornament, the next is 1/6 way down, then third is half before the last one is at the end of the tassel near he waist. A similar ornament is wrapped around her neck reaching a bit up her throat before going down to her collar bone and outwards. The front reaches her chest while the sides end shortly after the neck meets the collar.

Another thing that Fei did pick up from Renka was smoking from the Kiseru. While what they smoke isnt narcotic, it produces a similar effect with certain taste, depending on the herb. In addition, the smoke that comes out are of different colour, depending on herb. Renka is able to manipulate these smoke through mysterious means, however, it is just a side trick. Her Kiseru pipe is long, at 75 cm in length, made of metal and being extremely flexible, almost like a jockey whip.

Personality:
Renka is as laid back as they come as well as being relatively immature, free spirited and rather whimsical. Sometimes, even a slave driver to Fei. While holding a rather major position, she prefers to enjoy relaxing and the little things in life, rather than stress out and devote solely onto her job. What she does do, she gets done, but one would often find her able to shirk off jobs that arent that important to her competent personal attendant and at times, onto Fei. There are often times she becomes sage-like and serious when the situation calls for it and often, gives Fei and those close by cryptic, but crucial messages to help them. However these moments are far and few. Rarely does she show extreme emotions such as anger or being really ecstatic, though people can tell when she is serious and dangerous.

Fighting Style:
Renka is the Warlock of Fire. All combat is based on her powerful fire magic, burning all in her way to a crisp. While her clothes does not look like it allows it, Renka is very skilled in close quarter fighting, especially Ta Chi Quan, Bai Ji Quan and Wing Chun, three very close quarter fighting style which allows strength despite size. Not normally used as she prefer little exertion on her part, Renka nonetheless polishes them everyday. Lastly, her Kiseru pipe can be used as a weapon. Its body is made of an extremely durable and flexible metal while the bowl and the mouth piece is hard. With whip like movements, these hard, weighted parts can hurt a lot.

The downside of being a warlock is that she frequently has a lot of fevers. There is not much she can do about it, but Renka has gotten used to it to not make a fuss about it. She would just be somewhat lazier and sluggish that day and have her attendants and sometimes, Fei fan her and cool her down. It is also why she wears her clothes rather openly.

Weapon:
Technically not a weapon, Renka can use her long kiseru as a weapon. It is 75 cm long and made of very flexible
metal while the bowl and the mouth piece is hard. With whip like movements, these hard, weighted parts can hurt a lot. While both side hurts, the mouthpiece side can cause slight cuts, but less crushing damage while the bowl side is vice versa. Depending on strength, Renka can use this as a discipline tool when training people or as a deadly weapon on enemies.

History:
Renka is an enigma amongst the enigmas. When her age isn't even known, what chances are there of knowing her history? It is known she arrived into the Capitol around 20 years ago and by that time, was already an accomplished magic wielder. She was elected into Warlock position within 3 years and even then, she appeared not much different that she is now. A year into her Warlock position, she met with a 5 year old Yue Fei and through a whim, took her under her wing, teaching her fire magic up until now. Even though Fei was currently an highly recognised Archmagi, she still hangs onto Renka as if she was still 5, being the only person Fei ever obeyed obediently without question.

TIPSYNARUTO

Name:
Hyakuugen Touma

Moniker:
Shirou (On accounts of his white hair.)

Gender:
Male

Age:
24

Race:
Human

Job:
Zhang Retainer and Orange Tiger Guard

Appearance:
Shirou does not have an overly commanding presence. He may be rather tall, at 183cm with white locks and a rather pretty face, but his presence is woefully undermined by his Master, Zhang Yue Fei and her rather flamboyant dress and personality. Shirou is characterised by his white hair and red eyes and a rather noticeable vertical scar on his left eyelids. While it has not affected his eyesight, he more often than not, keeps his left eye closed. His lips are almost always in a carefree smile as if he doesn't have a care in the world. As a guard and Zhang Retainer, his body is well kept and fit with a swirl tattoo on his upper left bicep

Armour #2: (You'd like this pic Yuki if you like Kakashi)
Shirou's clothes are rather simplistic. On the inside, he has a black, skin tight shirt that cuts off at the shoulders and extends up his neck and up to his nose. However, Shirou prefers to leave it hanging at his neck rather than have his face covered. Over this is a long red scarf that reaches down below his waist. A light, pearlescent white chest armour hangs on two straps on his shoulder, covering from waist up to his upper chest with two sets of back loop that lets him slip in two katana. Similarly on his hands, he wear skin tight, mid bicep length gloves with a metal piece on top of his hand and in between the knuckles on his fingers while he has wrist and forearms protectors on each arm the same colour as his chest piece. Near the end of the gloves at the bicep area, he has wrapped bandages around his bicep so that he can strap cases there. Around his waist is a bag belt, which allow bags to be hung and clipped on. Shirou clips three large side packs to his back hip. His pants are of similar colour as his shirt, but are a bit baggier and loose. While it reaches down to his feet like normal pants, his leg puttee (what is wrapped around the leg) keeps it closed together. His shoes are rather sandal like, with his toes being open. On his left thigh, he has similar bandages as his hand so that he can attach cases to it.

Like his master's helm, Shirou has his own mask. While his shirt's lower face cover would work, Shirou has a white hard ceramic mask that he wears as well to cover his entire face. He has a small cloth bag that he puts it into on the right side of his waist when he isnt using it.

Personality:
Shirou is the happy go lucky type. Anything goes for him as long as the days are peaceful and he is alive. He can take a huge amount of abuse, being physical or verbal, always managing to laugh it off. He is the type to see the silver lining in almost everything. In addition, Shirou seems to be the rare few handfuls that are not seeking promotions and glory in the guards, being happy to be where he is and accepting it if it came. Likeable by everyone and friendly in response, Shirou is the personification of happiness. Insult him or throw stuff at him or even
spit at him if you will, he'd let it roll straight off. Insult his Master, however, God help you. For some reason, he is ridiculously attached and devoted to his Master, despite the rather uncaring attitude of Fei. Some even call him a masochist for still staying with her.

Fighting Style:
The best way to describe Shirou's class is a Shield soldier. He is a shield for his master. Anything that came within several meters of Fei that even smelt remotely dangerous and Shirou would be there. His two swords is specifically for this. Shirou is a master at Shirahadori, or the ability to catch bladed or none bladed attacks such as fists and kicks, arrows and swords, axes, spears and such. Therefore, he is said to be almost impenetrable and impervious to all attacks. However, as a result, it appears that all his other abilities such as actually fighting is sub par in regards to the other guards, always on the defensive and doing single strike counters.

Weapon:
Shirou's main weapon is his pair of katana. They are both 1 meter blades with 20 cm hilts. One has a typical katana hilt with black ribbon wrapping while the other has a more unorthodox bandage looking wrapping. Both are slipped in behind his back. In his pouches, he holds an assortment of gear such as shuriken, throwing knives, kunais. senbon, caltraps and a wide assortment of ninja gear.

History:
Shirou is as mysterious as they can get. He enlisted into the Zhang family though the grace of Fei, who on one of her solo outings through the country. On one of her rare occasions, she took pity on the ragged man and carried him (much to the surprise of the inn keeper and patrons), to the closest inn. It was raining and with the inn full, Fei was forced into the same room. Giving him the bed, she sat in the chair to sleep.

In the morning, Shirou woke up to find himself in a bed and with the sun behid her back shining through the window, he saw Fei. Slowly, he got to his feet as she stirred and got to his knees. When Fei woke completely, she found her hand in the hand of the man touching his forehead. He spoke

Lady Fei, i have found you. I will follow and serve you to the end of my life.

Fei was obviously somewhat disturbed and tore her hand from the stranger and made her journey back towards the city, in which Shirou did so too, much to her annoyance. What annoyed her even more was his recruitment into the Zhang retainers and to top it all off, her father appointed him to be her personal retainer, despite his lack of skill in combat, which brings her endless headache. Why her father did this for this mysterious man she did not know, but there was something odd Fei felt about him, though Shirou has yet to shown any signs of malicious intent besides being over protecting and devoted.

EPHEMERAL

Name:
Kai Yin

Gender:
Female

Age:
20

Race:
Human

Job:
Security Council Leader

Appearance:
Blazing crimson hair, slim body line, as well as green eyes all make this girl rather easy to remember. Yin tends to look rather weak too, because of her body shape as well as height, but anyone who crosses swords with her would easily discover how very wrong they are to have thought that way.

She particularly loves to wear as she does as shown, and almost never has been seen dressed otherwise.

Personality:
Yin is a rather nice person, cheerful and open -- only bordering on rude at times. She detests formalities with a passion. She'd rather the person treat her on equal standing, and tends to forget her position.

In battle, she's a nightmare. Although calm and silent, her attacks are fast and furious. They leave the defender little to no chance to defend. She also uses magic seamlessly with her melee strikes, leading on to her so-called 'Runic Arc' technique (that will be further elaborated upon).

Fighting Style:
Runic Arc

'Runic' because of her seamless integration of magic and melee. 'Arc' because of her high tendency to use slashing attacks.

Yin favors a rather brutal strategy, striking without giving the opponent any breathing space. If the enemy tries to put some distance, she only turns to magic to pull herself closer -- which only makes all the battles with her close ranged ones.

Weapon:
As shown in the image.

This sword was bestowed on Yin by the Emperor himself when she was made the leader in a private event within the Palace in view of all the

Called the 'Blade of Recognition' -- this blade is forged from the hardest metals, and two characters meaning 'Loyalty' are engraved on it. :D

History:
Born to the noble Kai Family, Yin was expected to grow up to be married off to some other noble's son. However, in her growing years, she was inspired by the Guards of the Security Council, leading her to take on rather tomboyish behavior to deter her family from deciding to stop her from her ambition to join the Security Council.

At the age of 16, she secretly picked up swordsmanship by hiring a swordsman in secret to teach her. It was then she discovered her talent with the blade, having bested her teacher, a master swordsman in only about a year after learning to deal with the blade.

She continues on to hire in secret a magic teacher who went on to teach her the magical arts that she later developed and personalized to some extent. She wasn't so much a talent in this area, but because of her ambition to become a White Tiger Guard, she practiced every single day in secret for the next 3 years, until she was particularly proficient.

It was then at the age of 20 that she joined the tournament to take her desired position, and there, she earned the champion's title, as well as the nickname 'Runic Arc' for her fighting style. The Emperor promptly summoned her to be Security Council Leader, and the story begins with her on the first day of her job.

-----

Name: Pan Mingzhu
Gender: Female
Age: 14
Race: Human
Job: Guard, Grunts Division
Appearance:

PanMingzhu3.jpg

forbidden-kingdom-21.jpg

Mingzhu is rather petite, around 5'1 and weighing about 100 pounds. She is attractive by the standards of many; however, she does not pride herself on her appearance, and she is not usually considered to be “gorgeous” or “a knockout.” She wears somewhat humble clothes when not on duty, and always keeps her long ebony hair tied back, for practical reasons. When on duty, she wears the standard guard uniform for the Grunts Divison; anything else, she figures, would be a sign of disobedience, and to have a mark against her for the sake of flaunting her appearance would only be one more extra cumbersome, unnecessary trial for her to contend with on her proposed journey upward through the ranks.

Personality: Though she is capable of appearing calm at times, Mingzhu is habitually fierce and standoffish. Due to a long history of struggles and disappointments in her life, she has learned how cruel the world is, and that one must often fight for things that others merely take for granted. She is constantly assessing the people around her, trying to determine whether she can best them if the situation calls for it; and other than her sparse and somewhat incoherent family, she seldom trusts anyone. Haunted by the heartache of her past, she is determined to rid the world of anything that causes people to suffer, and she will stop at nothing to rise through her ranks in order to be in a more ample position to do this. Despite her noble intentions, she does come across as a bit immature sometimes due to her headstrong attitude, and will not hesitate to argue with people much older than herself if she feels the situation merits it; however, these arguments are generally out of fear for the safety of others, or fear for the failure of a mission whose effects could potentially benefit a large number of people.

Fighting Style: Mingzhu has a short, wiry build, and she uses her speed to her advantage. She has average strength for someone of her size, and due to her young age, she doesn't have all that much experience in either martial arts or magic. However, she is in the process of studying mainly close-quarters techniques that allow fluidity, such as Baguazhang and Wing Chun. She has not settled on one particular style to focus on yet, however, because she has not been in training for very long and is still testing which ones would be the most practical for her needs. Due to her lack of serious brute strength, she also favors a good balance between offense and defense.

Mingzhu is also in the process of learning Earth magic, though her skills aren't particularly advanced at this point. Despite her hot-headed attitude, she had been attracted to the idea of magic that was more defensive than offensive due to the lingering guilt she holds over having been unable to protect Nianzu from danger, or at least attempt to heal him once he'd been wounded. Plus, the rumors of necromancy associated with the element have had her curious, ever since she heard them, whether it would ever be possible for an extremely powerful mage to somehow restore those who had perished to their original state, rather than mere skeletons. As such, she is involved in magic not only for the power behind it, but in order to learn more about what a mage could be capable of if he or she applied herself avidly enough. Her commonly used spells are:

Rift—A spell that creates a wall of earth between the caster and his or her enemy. The size of the wall depends entirely on the power level of the caster; as Mingzhu is a beginner when the story starts, her walls would probably be no bigger than seven feet tall, four feet wide, and one foot thick. No matter the size, they will remain standing until they are knocked down or broken apart by an outside force.

Camouflage—A spell that enables the caster to draw small rocks and dirt from the surrounding area onto and around his or her body, so that he or she is completely covered by them and blends into the landscape. (This spell is, naturally, only effective in wild areas where one would normally see large rocks or mounds of dirt, and would not work in a developed area like a city.) The spell is the most effective when the caster is crouching or lying down, and its effectiveness depends on the caster's ability; Mingzhu, at the beginning of the story, would only be able to cover herself with a thin layer of dirt if she was lying flat on the ground, and if she tried it while crouching down, it would probably not work very well.

Rapid Growth—A spell that causes tree limbs, vines, or other plant appendages to quickly grow longer and more tangled, which when used between two trees, for example, can weave a net full of thorny vines between the caster and their enemy. This is especially useful to slow down enemies who are pursuing the caster, and the spell can be used anywhere where plants grow, including large gardens within a city. The spell may also be used to aid the caster in climbing to higher ground; if he or she uses it on a vine that is above their reach, they can cause it to extend lower, and then grab onto it, using it to climb to the roof of a building, or the higher branches of a tree to escape from danger. There is an offensive version of this spell also in which the enemies themselves are entangled in the vines, but Mingzhu has not learned it yet at the beginning of the story.

Wound Binding—A spell that causes a tightly-woven patch of moss to suddenly appear from out of nowhere and grow over an open cut or wound in order to bind it shut, to stop the bleeding. The moss acts as a tourniquet if wrapped tightly around a limb, or a bandage if the wound does not need a tourniquet, and this particular type of moss used has healing properties which help the person's skin grow back over the wound more quickly. This spell would not be able to save someone whose wound was life-threatening or who had vital organs exposed by the wound, but it is effective for stopping bleeding caused by deep lacerations, and helps to keep wounds from getting infected as they heal also. Mingzhu has made a point of it to practice this spell the most, and thus she is more proficient with it than her other spells, but the spell itself is only for basic healing and has only limited power even if someone performs it perfectly.

Rockslide—A spell that tears chunks of earth and rock from the side of a cliff, hill, or other precipice, and causes them to come crashing down onto whomever is standing below. This is Mingzhu's only offensive spell at the present, and being a novice spellcaster, she can only dislodge sections of dirt and rocks of about five cubic feet in size.

One other thing that Mingzhu prefers about Earth magic over the other elements is the compensation for its use—after hearing about each one, eating bowls of soil sounded far less inconvenient than the other ones.

Mingzhu's preferred weapon is the single-edged butterfly sword, which she carries a pair of at all times (these, not the weapons seen in her picture above). They are each about 15'' long with 6'' handles, which are wrapped with a simple woven grip made of black cord. Mingzhu values practicality over showiness, so her weapons may not look fancy; however, their effectiveness makes up for it. The long curved quillon on each one serves to deflect enemy blows rather nicely, and the blades themselves are only sharpened halfway down on their cutting edges; the rest of the edge is used for blunt strikes and blocking, in order to keep from wasting a sharp edge on such things. The blades are easy to conceal due to their smaller size, and are easy to maneuver with during the close-quarters combat techniques that she employs. She keeps them in simple leather sheaths at her sides when they're not in use.

Mingzhu also owns a wooden crossbow for long-range attacks, though she only carries it with her when she anticipates a necessity for it. With it she can hit targets up to about 175 yards away, and she keeps about fifty bolts on hand in a leather pouch that hangs at her side (larger than the one seen above).

History: Mingzhu grew up in a somewhat poor family, living in less than an attractive home and having a minimum amount of toys, fancy clothes, or other possessions. As a result, she conducted most of her activities outside, keeping in shape just by playing in the streets with other local children. One of these children, Nianzu, a boy two years older than her, became her dearest friend for a long time, inhabiting a residence close to hers and spending more time with her than anyone else. As the two matured, Mingzhu grew to fancy Nianzu, finding him to be an attractive, charming, and completely infectious young man who teased her incessantly, to the point where Mingzhu thought he might share a mutual romantic interest in her. However, as Nianzu grew older, he started noticing other young women closer to his age, and—much to Mingzhu's dismay—became infatuated with a picturesque young lady named Fenfang. Fenfang's mysterious behavior soon made an envious Mingzhu suspicious, and over time, she gathered a substantial amount of evidence to prove that Fenfang was an animal shifter, transforming into a wolf at night and never making herself seen in the city anytime after dusk. Determined to drive the unwanted competition away, Mingzhu presented the evidence to Nianzu, who, in his state of captivation, naturally turned it down, dismissing it as mere rubbish. Infuriated, Mingzhu finally hit the last straw, and snuck into Fenfang's house one night while she was away, stealing white animal hairs off of her clothes to show him. However, her evidence, yet again, was rejected, and one night Nianzu finally decided to follow Fenfang's invitation to meet her in the woods outside the city, for what he'd presumed would be an evening of romance.

Mingzhu, determined to keep any such thing from happening, followed Nianzu out of the city, and continued to plead with him, warning him that Fenfang wasn't the girl he thought she was. He still failed to listen, however; and after telling Mingzhu to leave him alone, he walked off the rest of the way into the woods without her, where he quickly met his death by the hands of a transformed Fenfang. Traumatized by the ordeal, Mingzhu caught sight of Fenfang's wolf form as she was leaving the crime scene, and vowed silently that she would meet the woman again, when she herself was armed and stronger, and avenge Nianzu's death. She also vowed to do whatever she could in her life to prevent such tragedies from happening to anyone else, and made a decision that night to join the Emperor's guard, with the hope that someday she might lead an army against the world's dangerous monsters, any other animal shifters who were unscrupulously preying on the town, and whomever else threatened the good of society in general. At the point where the RP begins, Mingzhu will have been in the Grunts Division of the Guard for three months, having elicited something of a negative reaction from her aunt and grandfather for it, the only living relatives she has and the only people in this world she currently trusts.
