So i just got through the first disc, and after seeing Aerith get pwned by Sephiroth, i got to thinking:

"Cloud! instead of standing there like a stunned mullet, WHY THE FUCK didn't you rush in there and block the sword, OR shove the woman out of the path of the sword!!"

Seriously, he wasn't possessed, he snapped out of it before Sephiroth came down on her, he had plenty of time to do something, but no. He just stands there with drool hanging from his mouth, then goes epic emo cos she dies.

:ffs:

Maybe he wanted her to die. :8F: (Kidding!)

Most likely when you snap out of something like that you can't grasp reality right away or take action to something that has such a huge impact, I think would make sense. xD

Um whats Droll?:lew:

Kira you are harsh!............but funny:ryan:

he does just stand there eh? I can remember the FMV clearly:

Clouds stares

Aeris looks up and smiles

Camera pans up and Seph drops down and Stabs kills Aeris

Aeris falls, and drops the holy materia

It bounces on the Pedestals and her theme starts playing.

One of the most moving Events in FF/Video gaming history/

If not the Most saddest ever:sad3:

The way i saw it was he knew what he was doing, he just had no control of himself, even if he was in shock i'd be rushin over to the woman and going all "FF matrix" to save her, not standin around doing nothing but i see yer point lol.

Those pics made me LOL so hard.....!!

Sephiroth was going much faster than depicted in the cutscene. For all of you who have played Dissidia you know that it's a bitch trying to avoid that move if he's directly above you. And with the element of surprise, Cloud wouldn't have been able to do anything.

I just rewatched the scene and it never shows Cloud's face after it shows Sephiroth descending on Aerith. He may not have even seen him coming and he did come down rather quickly. I think he was still cloudy-headed (no pun intended) and confused over the fact that he had just nearly killed her himself.

I always thought it was supposed to be in slow-motion.. So he doesn't have as much time to react as one might think..

Idunno, the whole falling and stabbing process seems very slow to me. Maybe it's a possibility..

Well when it does show Aeris get stabbed,it doesn't really show Cloud in the FMV cutscene until after she gets stabbed.........Also I can remember when Cloud stops his sword when its intended for Aeris he kinda pushes himself back, and thats when Sephiroth comes in for the kill..........So he could of just been too far away to do anything maybe............

I Doubt Cloud wanted her to die. It was the rest of the world that he didn't care for at that moment, not Aerith. :ahmed:

He didn't do anything because he was still in shock from being controlled by Sephiroth to kill her himself. He literally just snapped out of it. The last thing he knew, he was about to run his sword through her himself, and it paralyzed him.

He didn't try and stop it because he thought the threat was gone, and in his mind, HE was the threat, not Sephiroth. He wasn't expecting Sephiroth to fall from the sky and kill her. It was a nightmarish surprise for him, that's one of the main themes for her death in the first place.

Sudden death of someone you love is what that whole scene's purpose was. If he had stopped it, the whole scene would have been lost.

tl;dr, Robot Santa said it best.

And my gawd, that first pic of Cloud jumping in front of the blade and pushing Aerith out of the way is too funny xD

And Square just had to have the tragic scene :wacky:

Humor Fail. :ffs:

Lots of people have made very good reasons, but the best reason is this: FOR THE PLOT.

The creators needed Aerith to die. Any attempt on Cloud's part to change such an 'impact scene' would have lessened the surprise in the player. It would've drawn it out too much and the surprise value would've gone down considerably. It also was trying to play out the idea that Cloud thinks of himself as incapable of helping/protecting anyone -- it's a cyclic theme. First, he cannot protect Tifa and his hometown and now, much later, he cannot protect Aerith. So, by just having Cloud stand there and watch, it emphasized the character's own feelings of negativity towards himself. This is necessary to build up a hopeless tension in order to make the final confrontation seem all the more ominous. This is quite common in fantasy, sci-fi and generally epic writing. You make the hero confident -- you crush that confidence -- then, when all seems lost, pull out a stunning victory. It enhances the sense of good triumphing over evil, despite all odds. Tolkein used this to great effectiveness, as have others.

So, there you have it. Aerith needed to die in that specific way in order to set the 'against all odds' atmosphere for the game.

Yet another sacrifice to the Drama Llama. The Drama Llama must be placated.

I always thought that he didn't move or go and try and block the attack because he was in shock and I guess being in shock you can't really move and you're like a deer in front of headlights, you just freeze and you can't seem to move. Always thought it was because Cloud was too busy shocked over Sephiroth appearing and flying over the air in this dangerous and deadly attack, that he didn't have the time to think of Aerith or he forgot about Aerith because his mind was so fixed on Sephiroth coming down all of a sudden with the attack out of basically no where. Just a theory and a opinion though. :mokken:

I always wondered this, as well. It's slightly important for her to die, though. For the storyline and all. But perhaps he was just in a daze from the shock of almost killing her, and he didn't notice Sephiroth. It seems highly unlikely that anyone could just not notice that, but Cloud is a pretty messed up little guy, yes?

The entire cast of 7 seems to have this problem continually. No one gets moving when it really matters, and as a result they all have their moments of tragedy. Personally, I felt that the characters were all a bit hollow, and using these tragic incidents is an easy way to make people feel sympathy/empathy for the characters.

In a lot of ways (ignoring the character issue), 7 was a game about people unable to stop the constant ruin and defeat. Barret and Dyne, Seto and the Gi, Cloud and Aerith, AVANLANCHE and ShinRa, Wutai and ShinRa, Cid and space travel, etc. The game is thick with failures (particularly the backstory, but some in game events as well), but shows the characters tackling and overcoming, forging a better and different future. As is traditional for a FF game, you want to see the characters win - in this one they go the extra mile and have them lose first.

Then again, I didn't feel any emotional draw to Aerith as a character, so this scene really didn't do it for me.

It does appear as if he lets it happens.

But that's not the case. 1: It was done for the story. 2: I don't think Cloud saw Sephiroth falling from the sky first of all. I don't think he'd be looking up with what happened.

Or at least, if it were me, I wouldn't be looking up. xD

I hate it when people say "If I were in that situation I'd blah blah blah" when in reality, you'd sit there, cry and piss your pants. Cloud was shocked by what had occurred and you must understand that Sephiroth is falling at quite a tremendous speed. He looked up to Sephiroth and each time he sees him, he is stricken by fear as if each time brings him back to the horrific Nibelheim incident. Anyone in the right mind SHOULD be scared of Sephiroth in that game, especially due to his height, piercing green eyes, unparalleled feats in SOLDIER and the massive Dai Katana he wields without struggling in the least bit. I imagine if the game were remade, you'd get a better understanding of how Cloud felt due to graphical advances over the years.

Yeah, i'm well aware of that, i wasn't being totally serious when i did the "if i were in that situation", Although, I wouldn't be in a state of shock or petrified due to the circumstances. He knew what he was doing, he just couldn't control his actions.

And yeah i know he was falling at a fast speed i didn't really think of that....which also brings up another question: WTF were the other party members doing? they should have followed him across the platforms incase the possession thng happens again (and it did). They could have also concentrated on protecting Aerith.

:hmm: i dunno, maybe i think too much?

Possibly the shock of it? Maybe he went brain dead for a moment and when he came around she was already 6 feet under?

Maybe he couldn't stop it for A.) It was in the plot to have a tragedy and B.) Cloud was...I don't know...looking at Aerith and not above her, which is where Sephiroth came from...? Like Terra said before me xD

Just my crazy theory though...:hmmm:

Yeah i agree with this post. Cloud was shocked, not shocked, petrified. Sephiroth is walking nightmare fuel, he burnt Cloud's village and killed his neighbors and parents. Plus everytime Sephiroth comes around, most of the time we get this heartbeat sound, that's Cloud's heart pounding. He's scared, scared of Sephiroth.
