FF XIV has been negatively responded to by critics and FF lovers. Who here thinks FF XIV is going to be an epic fail and die? There's tons of reasons why, there's already been many, many complaints and such, and I'm sure there isn't going to be a steady rate of new members. Just a steady rate of members quitting. I'm sure in a few weeks, when most people's 1 month trials are up, the game's activity level is going to go down, down, down. What do you think?

I doubt it since it just came out a few weeks ago. I am sure there are people out there who like it and since it just came out I highly doubt it will die within the first month due to poor reviews. Not to mention the PS3 version hasn't come out yet so hopefully there will be some improvements made by then to help attract more people to it. At least that is what I am hoping.

I said "no" because:

1. People will probably play the PC version a bunch. Nothing like having a game to test that new computer of yours?

2. Reception doesn't always prevent a large number of copies being sold.

3. It has the Final Fantasy name.

I'm kind of in the middle, I'm not really sided with either opinion. I see it could be a possibility, but I also agree with FinalCzen's points.

As much as a part of me would like to say "Hell yes, it's going to die!!", I doubt it. It has many flaws at the moment, and with the PS3 version coming next March or so, there is a slight possibility SE may rectify some of them. However, I doubt that there's much which can be done to get my interest. For a game which was in development for 4 years, it could've stayed in development a little longer to work out the bugs etc. Far as I know, the Alpha and Beta trials were rather short and from speaking to a few beta players of FFXIV, SE didn't seem to listen to what was being reported back to them. Like I've said in another thread here, SE rushed the PC version to beat Blizzard with World of Warcraft: Cataclysm which is due out in December I think this year. Hell, recycling character races (giving them new race names and slightly altering their appearance) as well as areas from FFXI, when they had the opportunity to create new races and areas is pure laziness as well as a complete lack of imagination on SE's part. Still... there are heaps of MMO's available (both P2P and Free ones), so for SE to release FFXIV in the current state it's in, with upcoming MMO's (the abovementioned Cataclysm and later next year Star Wars The Old Republic, I can't help think of as not just a bad move, but a possible end to SE as a whole (even though they continue to whore FFVII).

I do agree timing was rather poor. They should of worked on it more and should have put it on the market when no other MMORPG's were coming out, because obviously, WoW Cataclysm is going to win because it's much more popular than FF XI, which is very similar to FF XIV to people who don't know too much about them. Hopefully the PS3 version will be better, but their timing sucked this time around. Hopefully they won't try to compete with anyone else when they release the PS3 edition.

I think it depends on how they handle the game in the future. If they manage to rectify some of the mistakes people were unhappy with at launch relatively quickly and continue to listen to their community in the future, then they definitely have a shot. For all its flaws and errors, Final Fantasy XIV does seem like a unique game in the genre and if handled correctly I'm sure there's an audience for it.

If all else fails, they could always go the route of Dungeons and Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online: Make the the majority of the content free to play and have people pay for extra stuff if they want it (and they will if they get hooked). Both DDO and LOTRO have enjoyed a bit of a renaissance after relaunching as free-to-play MMOs and Square could probably do the same with FF XIV somewhere down the line if it needs a second wind.

FFXI had similar game engine to EverQuest, with a heavy emphasis on forming Experience parties to build your character's job levels. WoW had a different system which worked well, and a lot of players from both FFXI and WoW have said how hard it is to get exp in FFXI. True there have been additions to FFXI to make it easier for solo play, however to really get the good amounts of exp, once again you have to go to Exp. Party.

I remember being told by a family member, that because FFXIV is coming to the PS3, that is the reason to get a PS3. I disagree. FFXI was available on PC, PS2 and Xbox 360, and was the first MMO to really get my attention right from the start. True I haven't played FFXIV, but due to some reasons of mine, I can say with 100% accuracy that I will NOT be playing it. Ever. Even if I was given a PS3 this Christmas and a fully paid pre-order of FFXIV, I wouldn't play it.

Not sure. There are people who don't like it but as I've come to learn through the years those who dislike it tend to be louder than those that actually do. There could very well be just as many, if not more, who enjoy the game and are paying for it as when you don't have a problem with something you don't say anything. I wouldn't be ready to say that it's coming to its death unless I see proof of Final Fantasy XIV sales falling down the toilet somewhere. They still have a chance to turn things around. PS3 sales might be better than PC sales, but that remains to be seen.

Though I do agree that timing is terrible, and timing is everything. Competition is going to be a bitch. As much as Final Fantasy may be popular I don't think it's anywhere near as popular as World of Warcraft and Star Wars, even if there weren't any problems with the game I have my doubts that they could compete with two titles such as those.

Well let's give it a month or two and see where sales are. It's still the first 30-day month, so the trial is over yet. We'll just have to see the sales plummit or rise in a while.

Not at all I for one think Final Fantasy 14 looks like a fine game. I remember that 11 didn't have the best start either so I think in time we may start to see things turn around in the same way 11 did. Not entirely sure how well sales will do for the PS3 version but since Final Fantasy did start out on video game systems it may just end up doing better irregardless of the fact MMORPGs in general are better played on the PC.

Good point.

I hope FF XIV turns around, I'm planning on purchasing it with my PS3 when I save up for it! There's so much to save up for right now, PC repairs, PC parts, PS3's, video games, ect.... >.<

At the moment, I can't see the game completely crashing and burning quickly. Remember that any game with "Final Fantasy" in the front cover tends to draw in from rather moderate to impressive sales initially. However, with the fact that it's solely the PC version in the market and all the negative publicity coming in at FFXIV from all angles, its sales aren't going to be anywhere near astounding at all. It's up to SE to actually do something drastic at this point now.

If SE can manage to amend the many problems of the game (i.e. user-unfriendly interface, lack of guidance to those starting off, add more content to an otherwise large but sparse world, deal with loading times - to name a few examples) and as aforementioned by another poster before me, actually listen to their audience, then perhaps they can turn the game around. SE has just released what is - from the general consensus - a sub-par game in a market dominated by so many MMOs, many of them free to play and probably superior to FFXIV. If SE does not put the effort in now, they will eventually lose their players far quicker than envisaged.

Which is a shame however. The game's visuals look astounding (particularly the opening CGI) and the music from Uematsu evokes as much Final Fantasy nostalgia as it possibly can. It should have the potential to be a great game, but the final release that was pushed out the door doesn't seem to be anywhere near it so far. And yes, normally I take what reviewers say with a grain of salt, but as the world has almost unanimously slammed the game - there are good reasons for them doing so.

I don't think it is going to die....yet!

Although the next few weeks are crucial and they really need to iron out some of the bugs and sort out the damn combat system.

The good point is that it has all the makings of an awesome game as long as they sort out some of the bugs and add more varied content.

unless they fix all the glitches and annoyances I think it might die within a few short years :(

Well it certainly wont die soon. I just have hopes for the playstation 3 version actually succeeding. It is 100% finished now but they are still working on glitches and all that. It could die in a few months if it really is shit and continues to glitch. I watched a review of XIV on Pc and I really wasnt impressed. The Cgi is fantastic however and Nobuo Uematsu is the legend of Final Fantasy music. Surprisingly the voice acting is also good. As for the rest... Not so much. I really laughed when SE said this will rival World of Warcraft...

Maybe if they hadn't added those strange and unfamiliar job classes, people would like it a little better.

I for one quite like the idea of having a large variety of unconventional job classes and non-combat specific roles as it does at least try to add another edge to the game that isn't the same old fighting monsters here and there.

However, even if this factor is widely disliked, simply removing it won't do much at all. While I've never really played the game myself and I'm basing this on what I've read and seen, the game itself apparently feels like a rushed product. It is buggy, glitchy even, has an unfriendly user interface, lacking in many areas and generally does not feel like it was fully prepared for a disked launch. Even the team behind the game had to openly apologise soon after its launch, which goes to show that there's a distinct possibility it may have been a rush job before competitors such as WoW's new expansion pack hits the market.

EDIT: And to make this more relevant to the thread's topic, considering this game is very flawed and not the cheapest MMO out there in an already saturated MMO market, SE has a lot to do to win new members or revive trust in their game. Otherwise it's curtains. Credits to them at least for realising this as they've extended a free-to-play period.

I have yet to play the game but I have seen reviews and video from both sides, Those who hate it and those who love it. In my personal opinion I do not think it will die I mean when FFXI first came out there was a lot of negativity and slander about the game and over time SE fixed the issues and slowly but surely became my favorite MMORPG.

Lets not forget the days of zone kills and bugs galore in XI. IMO (remember my opinion) SE probably just wanted to get the title out there before the other MMO's that are expected to be released this year and obviously there was some things they missed and things that look like it was just overlooked. Give the game time and I am sure SE will come through...well we can only hope right
