So I was talking to a friend from New Zealand the other day and he was amazed that I knew who Scribe and Savage were (for those who don't know, they are Rappers from New Zealand). This got me wondering about which Australian bands are popular overseas. It also got me thinking about the amount of bands which are huge in their home countries but unheard of over here.

Have you ever been surprised to hear that a band from your country is huge somewhere else?

Actually yes, I am surprised and even if I'm from America its a phenomenon that this person I'm about to mention is famous over there. So apparently Marilyn Manson is freakin HUGE! in Japan. I mean back in the day 2002 I was watching something on him (unfortunately on MTV) and it showed how nutty people went for him over in Japan.

I can understand Britney Spears and Lady Gaga and all the other crap artists we are putting out there (a bit bias, sorry), but Marilyn basically was kneeled to as far as how many people adore him over there.

It still blows my mind..

Your friend was obviously an Australian in disguise, because most people know that Scribe and Savage are known in Australia.
The only New Zealand band that I can think of are the D4 who are/were popular in Japan. We actually have a couple of decent bands, ( The Mint Chicks and Deja Voodo) and a Steriogram song was used to advertise the iPod and was on a couple of sports games.

I was thinking of something along the same lines earlier, bands like Madness, who had numerous hits and were quite popular in Britain and here, are known as one hit wonder bands in the US, and there's probably quite a few more like that.

Denmark is a pretty small country, so whenever a band does as much as reasonably well abroad, the Danish media tend to blow it completely out of proportion. So more often than not, I just end up being surprised that these people have NOT heard about these Danish bands :P
