Well, this year we celebrate the 10th anniversary of when FF7 was released, since the original release, it has grown to gigantic proportions, having a movie and numerous spinoff games related to certain characters and plot points in the history of the original. But, the question is this, was all the fanfare, hype, the spinoffs, etc., was it all justifiable as genuine gamer interest or was it Square/Square-Enix wanting to make "the most beloved final fantasy" into "the most lucritive cash cow that is final fantasy"

I've heard interviews, seen statements, I've even argued my own points about this and I just want to see what others thought? so in short the question is this: FF7: Worth the hype, or just a way for SE to make some serious cash?

I think that depends on what is made from it, for instance, I loved the AC movie, but hated Dirge of Cerberus. I think when a company handles a game like Final Fantasy 7, which has the most fanbase and also has an excellent mythology behind it, they need to walk a fine line when expanding on it. To me, DoC was a cash in, and no mistake. The shoddy camerawork, the silly cameos that felt like they were there only to remind you that you were playing an FF game, I could go on. On the other hand, I am really loking forward to Crisis Core, because the story of Zack and Sephiroth is very speculative, and en exploration into Zack and Sephiroth's relationship IMO, is an amazing project, and one which certainly contributes well to the overarching story of FF7.

The movie was a little bit of both. I almost crapped my pants when they announced it, nearly died trying to get subtitles working on my PC after it came out in Japan, and then bought the PAL version the day it came out in the UK. I loved it. I didn't feel it contributed to the story as well as it could have, especially Aeris. She did not help the story in any way. Also, it felt a little bit Donnie Darko esque in that you basically had to make your own assumptions as to where the rain came from at then end, what actually happened to Sephiroth when the Lifestream took him at the end of FF7, etc.

Squenix have had quite a hit and miss affair with FF7. There are some things that you can say are golden, and really could be good in their own right, like Crisis Core, and then some do feel tacked on and unhelpful, like DoC. The film sits comfortably in the middle, I think.

And the mobile version sucks noodles.

My two cents.

I personally think the classics should be left alone, Squarenix should spend thier time developing new games that are as good as FFVII rather than just closing up plot holes, the way the story is interpreted is for each and every player to decide

In a way, they are milking the FF7 cow for all she's worth. But on the other hand, that doesn't neccesarily make it a bad thing. Square Enix is a company, so to them Final Fantasy is a buisness. That doesn't mean that they're not looking out for the fans either. They got alot of angry fan male when they made the sequel to FFX, saying that fans wanted a sequel to FF7 more.

However you look at it, Square's ultimately in it for the money, but I believe they're treading carefully around all there FF7 projects to not demoralize or sell the game short.

100% Agree With Omnislasher, I Dont Think They Would Make A Remake Of FF7 For The PS3 Anymore, Because If You Think About It, Its Not Really A Smart Buissness Move. If You Oversell Something, It Looses Its Popularity.

It Doesnt Mean I Wont Actually Buy The Remake, Its More Of The Question Of Will I Enjoy It As Much As I Did For The PS1? I Answer is Probobly No.

Crisis Core Should Be Good, As Said Before, Its Good In Its Own Right.

Film Was Not Bad, Personally I Dont Think We Saw Enough Of Aeris And The Rest Of The Crew.

DoC Wasnt Really Good To Be Honest, It Moved To Far Away From The Final Fantasy Style Of Gameplay By Making It A Third Person Shooter.

They Should Leave FF7 Alone Now And Focus On Milking Someother Great Title To Its Deathbed...

This is Just My Opinion...

I agree with Omnislasher. They're getting all the money they can from a good game that had rave reviews. But why not? If you know it's going to be successful, you should go for it. It was a smart move that they made, to make the whole compilations of Final Fantasy 7.

I personally like the compilations. I own Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus, and I'm going to own Crisis Core when it comes out likely. And I have a Sephiroth action figure. Advent Children was a good movie, with amazing graphics. Dirge of Cerberus definately could have been better, but it wasn't that bad. And Crisis Core looks like it'll be good. I don't know about the other things, but they're probably good too.

So go Square!

Both.

I think perhaps they might be wanting to give us new things to learn about the storyline, but I think that they are trying to get as much money from it while they still can.

It's a great game, sure it deserves it hype. A lot of great things (as well as hideous things) have received their share of "hype". Take a look at the 80's for example:
 • Miami Vice Fashion - Popularized by Don Johnson on the hit tv show.
 • Hacky-Sack - Coordinated enough to kick a beanbag but too wimpy to be a jock? Hacky-Sack was your sport.
 • Smurfs - Blue elflike creatures, dwelling happily in the forest. Creatures with names like Jokey, Greedy, and Brainy Smurf. The went through adventures, sought advice from Papa Smurf and found themselves captivated by the perky Smurfette, the only female in the clan. During Smurf Mania, they out sold Star Wars, Garfield, Snoopy, Annie and Mickey Mouse.
 • Horror Movies - Nightmare on Elm Street, Jaws, Friday the 13th, these types of films were so popular that many sequels followed. On top of that, there were tons of children that dressed as Freddy Krueger or Jason for Halloween.
 • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - A hit cartoon about a bunch of hip turtles who loved eating pizza and could also fight well. People bought lots of related dolls, stickers, lunchboxes, etc.
 • Nintendo - If you were a kid growing up in the 80's then you remember playing Mario Bros, Tecmo Bowl, Metroid, Castlevania or other popular nintendo classics at home or with your friends. Most nintendo users played their video game consoles so much that in order to get the games to start they had to blow into the cartridge and adjust the spring in the console slot.
Come on now, for video gaming history you can definitely stick FFI and FFVII as 2 of teh most epic games to ever be released. They are great, revolutionary, and definitely not passing fads like my previous list of 80's fads.

FFVII is a milestone game. Does everyone have to like it? No. Is it one of the most recognizable games in gaming history? Yup. Can't change a thing about it. "Get it while it's hot!"

The sad thing is that TMNT is more alive than Nintendo these days... and as for whether FFVII spin offs are out to make a profit for Squeenix? Are you kidding? No, they wanted to do it non-profit but accidentally charged $50 per game. Bank error in their favor. Har har! I wear the special hat!

Square-Enix is a business and yes, they are out to make money. A lot of people think that's "bad". They can go back into their vans and play with their hemp. They're doing it to further the product. To make something new and to turn a profit while doing so. If they make a product just for money, their consumers will kindly say "go f*ck yourself" and not buy from them anymore. If they make a product just for product, they're saying "go f*ck yourself" to themselves. Balance. It's always about balance.

I could only speak for myself and say I've played a lot of RPGs in my life. The two that stand out the most is Final Fantasy 7 which is my favorite game of all time, followed by Xenogears at a very close second. In the course of my RPG playing career, these are the only two games that have definitely stood out among the rest, and they were some of the first RPGs I'd ever played.

Let's take a look shall we.

FF7 sequels, pre-quels, & spin-offs:

- Advent Children: great flick, gave us a little closure on the game

- Dirge of Cerberus: though not a lot of people liked it, the only complaint I really had was that the game was really short. Other than that, I feel this was a good insight into Vincent's life.

- Last Order: It was alright but it was way to short and it didn't stay true to the story FF7 told you

- Before Crisis & Crisis Core: Haven't played them, but Crisis Core looks good.

Xenogears has a lot of pre-quels, but they've all ruined the Xeno name. I played & beat Xenosaga episode 1 and it sucked, I started playing episode 2 and it was dragging so much I stopped playing it half way through. I never started playing episode 3, but I doubt I'll ever start.

My point is if Square is making decent spin-offs of FF7, as long as they stay true to the game and provide insight on the characters pasts and future, I say whatever FF7 related game comes out, I'll buy no questions asked.

Ten years later i still think its the best ff ever. Since the storyline is great and all the characters are awesome. Still we can say it did set the bar in the ff series and on the rpg world.

Indeed, couldnt have said it better myself. I just hope they leave FFVIII alone or I will have to go all medievil on SE's arse lol.

lol I believe that's the question though. A lot of people obviously don't think they're making decent spin-offs :/

I for one, even though I loved the graphix and music in AC, hated everything else. I'm not gonna say why cause I posted a big ol' post in the FFVII: AC section just yesterday.

DoC was okay. Honestly I liked it more than AC, but that doesn't mean I think it's the greatest game in the world (not by a long shot).

Last Order was pointless. With CC being released sometime in the future...what is LO for...?

Gotta say I agree with the Xenogears comment though. I loved Xenogears to pieces. Then I went and bought Xenosaga Ep. 1......and I hated it. I couldn't even get halfway through the game without being exceptionally bored. So I traded that sucker in. I haven't even bothered trying to play the other two, they look just as bad.

Not the best Final Fantasy game of all time but arguably the most important.

The constant milking of the game with crappy spinoffs has sort of ruined its reputation but its importance shouldn't be knocked. However in the end it was a good game that has bettered before and since its release.
