Chapter 1: The dawn of the tide
As the sun settles behind the ruined buildings of sector 4 in Midgar, a convoy makes way into the centre of the quarantine. They pass citizens infected with the Geostigma gushing from the exterior of their bodies, some die as they try to prevent the cars and trucks from passing through by lunging themselves in front. It wasn’t a slum anymore but a warzone of death and tragic loss. The amount of people whose lives have been lost to the virus, as well as the many deaths caused by gunfire as a means of containing the infected from spreading.
The convoy makes a passing down a few alleyways due to them being blocked off from rubble of buildings and destroyed cars ablaze. Inside however is a briefing of their current objective, a soldier first class. He is young and muscular, the hair stoops to the shoulder and a clean shave. A scar can be seen down the left cheek. His uniform addresses him as Officer Kyle, he places his hand on a map and points at all routes in and out of sector 4.
“All right listen up troops, were going to make our way to the main bridge connecting both sides of Sector 4. At this point we received Intel on the small resistance groups making a blockade which if other sources tell us, they are fully armed. If the worst comes to the worst, leave no one alive. We are to do our best in maintaining this virus outbreak and make sure the people are well secured and medically supervised....any questions?” Kyle says
A group of soldiers lay in the side seats of the vehicle, they carry on their shoulders, loaded rifles and side arms. All of them can be seen wearing the traditional Shinra Militia outfit with infra-red goggles covering their eyes. Elsewhere inside were boxes storing ammunition and grenades but above was a television screen above, casting a news story about the Geostigma outbreak. One soldier lay silent a newcomer to the quarantine operation, codenamed Caine. Kyle steps over and taps Caine’s head waking him up from his silent slumber.
“Are you with us in this conversation newcomer?” Kyle asks
Caine whilst jolted from being asleep, brings himself around as he sees only blurs and blobs as his eyes hadn’t adjusted to the room.
“Yes Kyle sir” Caine replies
“Very good Caine, I need you awake to listen to what I have next to say...” Kyle answers
Kyle paces across the vehicle floor and turns his back on the troops as he looks at the news story shown on the television. A tension within the soldiers was being built with the noise of screams coming from the streets that were ablaze and rioters smashing against the convoy as a means to stop them.
“Caine, I am relying on you to help us against these resistance fighters that are aiding the people who are infected with this virus or disease. I want you to head to the northern warehouse, our Intel reports that all weapons and ammunition is stocked there. I want you to set some demolition charges and rig that building. We need to crunch down hard on this and we need to hit them hard. Once we reach the bridge we’ll drop you off for you to go on your own, this is a single man mission” Explains Kyle
“But sir isn’t that a bit risky sending me in, with no backup” questions Caine
“I do not doubt your abilities soldier, but as of this point I do not have the additional backup in which you request......we are now reaching the bridge” replies Kyle
As the convoy reach the bridge the weather changes into a dark cloud of tears, raining amongst the world below. They stop still and the back door opens from one of the vehicles, as soon as that happens a missile strikes the bridge floor exploding and flipping some of the convoy vehicles back. The damage is disastrous and the repetitive sounds of assault gun fire can be heard as resistance fighters popped through the smoking cloud of rubble and fire and towards them.
Caine bursts out of the rubble which had covered his body and his fellow comrades who remain lifeless as their blood tinkles through the cracks of stone. He gets up clutching his leg and makes his way to the cover fire from more of the convoy. Officer Kyle was there but in medical aid as a metal rod impaled through his leg. The resistance continued fire amongst the convoy and Caine took cover close by to fire back some rounds. As he remained still the world around him began to slow, he could see the fear in each soldier’s eyes. The scream of pain from the ongoing death from gun fire, the blood painting the bridge in front. Kyle can be seen giving a fellow troop a package and points towards Caine.
The trooper makes his way over the rubble and through the gun fire unscathed, he hands over the package to Caine and taps his shoulder.
“Officer Kyle told me to give you this!” he shouts to talk over the ongoing fire
“What’s in it?” Caine questions as he opens up the package
“It’s instructions for the mission at hand and what else we require of you to do, he also told me to say that he has managed to get hold of another Shinra Convoy North of here close to your destination for you to get some aid in this operation. NOW GET MOVING!” He shouts as he pushes Caine off and over into the river below and watches him drift with the current taking him near to where he needs to be.
At the same time Kyle manages to find a radio, it’s beaten up pretty bad but still functional. He dials a frequency and places it to his ear. As this happens he watches as his troops die as they try to protect their ground and himself. As he watches it all a voice can be heard through crackling, Kyle places his hand to his ear to kill off some of the sound surrounding him.
“This is Officer Kyle speaking, we need immediate support now, the resistance are well armed and we completely misjudged the situation. I’m calling in for support asap” says Kyle
The radio remains silent for a couple of seconds, and at the same time he was being shot at as they were gradually making their way through his front linemen.
“This is Tseng of the Turks, on behalf of the president I am hereby branding you and your crew expendable” Tseng said
The radio cuts off and at the same time Kyle realises what is to happen to them all. He grabs his side arm and pulls himself off of the bench in which he was sitting on and goes in to help stand along his troops one last time.
