Why is final fantasy VII so popular and said to be the best game when final fantasy VIII and X, etc have much more better graphics and the story is more awesome than VII?

Final fantasy VII has tiny characters and the later ones like VIII have better characters, better faces and better stories?

My question is why is VII the best FF game when there are others that beat VII???

Because it was supposed to be for the N64, and then it came out for Sony, and then the Sony players (they had yet to develop into the fanboys they are now) started giving this game more credit then it deserved. Because it was the first 3D FF, and it actually wasn't bad.

But I totally agree with you about FFVIII being underrated.

hmmm fahim FFVIII fan boy?

Why is it people make these stupid threads?

Anyway everyone prefers different things.(that is the ultimate answer to these kind of threads)

How is he a fanboy? He mentioned X as well, and didnt praise it at all, just said that it had better characters and storyline. Not fanboyism, but just an opinion.

Just because you personally feel that FFVII isnt as good as FFVIII and X doesnt mean everyone does.

there is no way in hell that FFVIII can be the best, its terrible - far more people Dislike FFVIII than people dislike FFVII

X has its critics too - but japan voted it the best game of all time in 2004, with FFVII in at a close 2nd.

But the reason why FFVII is called the Greatest FF game ever is because its a timless classic.

it has everything - a complex plot, interesting characters, a love triangle, classic music and perhaps most important of all - Unanswered questions. which has lead to things like AC and crises core being released to answer those questions - of course people complain that FFVII has been whored out - but thats because WE demanded it - we simply cant get enough of this game ^_^

Well...

FFVII
Story - Complex, yet it flows really well. It's enjoyable, rarely gets boring.
Gameplay - It's both interesting and fun, the materia combos were cool.
Characters - Pretty in depth, and interesting.

FFVIII
Story - Less complex than FFVII, but still really good. It can get boring at some parts.
Gameplay - Great gameplay, only thing that brought it down is the complexity of it.
Characters - Erm.. somewhat like FFVII, only less.

FFX
Story - Too direct, predictable on most parts.
Gameplay - Too direct, the Sphere Grid is tiresome at times.
Characters - Well..

The only thing that FFVIII and FFX that beat FFVII is the graphics.
BUT in an RPG, the most important thing is the storyline, and second most is gameplay, and FFVII exceeds the both of 'em. ;)
And following what Aeris Gainsborough said, FFVII is THE FF that gets all the expansion, because WE wanted it.

I don't see why people post in here to moan about this game, if you like others better, we aren't going to shout and point, or even shun you behind your back, everyone has the right to which games they like and dislike, I like this game better than most the others, I might be a fool for doing so, but that's just the way I feel, this thread starter obviously feels differently from me, in which case his time would surely be better spent asking for answers with things he didn't understand, or otherwise talking about the games he did like in thier respective areas?

Well the story was good. Even Square Enix themselves said it was the best FF game they had made. Watch Icons on G4 and you might see it. But anyway, the story, fights, and some graphics were good in this game. I think this is why it was the best FF game ever.

I 100% agree with you. ffVII had it all, going against a giant cooperation, fighting dragons, saving th planet and protecting innecent people. The combat was simple at first and had lots of depth and hardly any major battle was the same.
The main bad guy had a intresting backstory that you can feel sympathy for. Main charactors have there own stories and links with other people, all of the main charactors have their own events in the storyline, which make you grow closer to them. Its one of the only games where you can get fired up too fight.
All these qualities and more make ff7 a classic game if not the best game ever.

First off never bring in graphics when comparing 2 different RPGs from 2 completely different times. To put it bluntly if FF7 had the same graphics as FFX then IMO people would still cheer for FF7.

The reason FF7 is so good is because of many things.

1. The gameplay and battlesystem is simple yet complex. You can simply throw on materia and just cast spells but if you really want to embellish the full extent of the battle system you can pair up materia to derive out grusome combos. Also attaching the right accessories before a battle can make the difference between getting the easy win or going through phoinex downs like water trying to survive the boss.

2. Storyline- I've played FF6-10 and IMO the only storyline that can hold a candle to FF7's storylinne is FF6. The storyline was seamless. It NEVER felt like what you were doing in the game was a huge chore. Everything felt like it was part of the story. The storyline was also complex as it had many other plot lines weaved into it. Other FFs had good storylines but FF7 IMO was done the best.

3. Characters- Probably the most memorable and colorful cast of characters. From Cloud's hair and gigantic sword, and Aerith's angelic attitude, to characters like Barrett and Cid with their always pissed off attitude. Aside from maybe FF9 (Vivi is just awesome) no other cast of character in ANY RPG has left that big of an impression on me.

I liked the game for four simple reasons:
1.Storyline
2.Battle system
3.Characters
4.Gameplay
I've said it once and I'll say it again, FFVII is better than FFX even with the graphics that it had.

So what if the graphics are bad now...........at the time they were GROUNDBREAKING. Just like in 10 years time FFX's graphics will probably look bad.

Mario on the SNES has bad graphics but it's a great game.

What makes Final Fantasy VII so good? Well , the reason it's the BEST Final Fantasy is this:

1) The game has some of the greatest music ever. In a game and outside a game.
2) The characters each have their own theme, but the storyline drags everyone into it perfectly. The storyline is the most complex in a Final Fantasy game ever, and this is no joke.

check this:
http://www.ffcompendium.com/h/ff7story.shtml

The story blends in perfect and sets the scene for everything.

3) The battle system was unbelievable. I'd say it's absolutely impossible to fault it. It was just perfect.

4) Back to the storyline, you actually felt emotions (if you have any) for the characters. You get close to them as their themes open in the game.

5) replay value - the game had TONS OF IT. If you complete FF7, you've probably missed something, even if it's small. You will be needing to play it time and time again to fully complete it

6) big game - FF7 spans over 3 disks. It's a huge game. First time playing , it took me one year to complete, (70 hours of gameplay). The 2nd time through it, it took me 35 hours). And not once was any of it boring. I mean, how many games can you play most days of the year FOR THE YEAR and not get bored of??

7) The Gameplay itself. Simple enough bt great. There was so many different ways of utilising your stats with armour, materia etc.

Is that enough reasons??

and yes, i'm an FF7 fanboy, But is that a bad thing?!? I came on this site because i am sure i'll find more people like me and i don't get laughed at for being such a hardcore fan.

FF7 is the best Final Fantasy.

These threads always make me laugh. They're always so full of bias it's sad.

Graphics is a stupid reason to bring to any argument on whether a game is better, especially if you've played games like VIII and above where the graphics are obviously superior, first.

The graphics in VIII are better, that's obvious. But it's just purely opinion you think VIII's story is so much better. Honestly, I find VIII to be a piece of shit story wise, and the characters are so bland and boring I stopped caring about any of them before the end of the 2nd disc. But that's all just how I feel about it.

Because it's how people say it. Plus, if someone has opinions like this about VII, people don't hesitate to jump down someone's throat and just call them a FFVII fanboy.

Out of all of them I think FFX is the best because it has a great story with great characters and fun gameplay. I have yet to play FF VIII but i used to have FF VII and i hated it. but i understand that different people like different things.

I thought that final fantasy 7 was the best. Graphics don't really matter, but they are really cool

Love the storyline
Love the way the story is told to keep everyone in the dark, enocuraging out-of-game discussion and to look for secret areas
Love the characters
Love the battle style
Love the music
Love the locations

you get the idea :P

(PS: I am NOT a fanboy, I play and enjoy all of the series, all the way back to number 4,5,6, I just like this one best)

Ok this is how I feel about it, FFVII is the first FF game that I've ever played. IMO, it's the best one I've ever played(yes I did go back and play the others except FFI and II but I played it with emulators and couldn't save, except with IV since I have that on GBA). I liked VI but since I couldn't save, I don't know the rest of the story. Though FFVII is over rated, it felt like a demotion when I played FFX. I didn't play X-2 so I can't comment on that or on the newest FF.

I think the year that Square made Final Fantasy VII was just a good time for them creatively. The only game with a storyline better than VII's (in my opinion) is Xenogears, because it just has more complexity. Later Final Fantasies just don't seem to have the right kind of mix, for me. Although I enjoyed VIII, X, and XII, they just didn't quite involve me in the world as well as VII did. But that's just my take on it.

Basically, for me, the reason VII rises to the top is that its storyline is just awesomely complex. I think few games can beat the amount of varying characters and hidden truths. What you see is not what you get in VII. Most games are more straightforward about things, but Final Fantasy VII actually allowed the gamer to discover things at the same time Cloud discovered them.

Plus, that battle system and the music rock. I've always had a soft spot for both. :P

I agree with nadir, although the other games were brilliant, there is just something about VII, to the point where people are still discussing that story several years after its release
