FFXIII and FFXIII:Versus

They are two completely different games. From my understanding, they take place in the same world but not in the same timeframe. I also remember hearing that Versus is more action based where FFXIII is more of a typical RPG experience.
Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII (a third game which is being released on the PSP) are part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Fabula_Nova_Crystallis:_Final_Fantasy_XIII) Which basically means that they all take place in the same universe, but are not necessarily related to each other. Which means that there will be different characters and different storylines in each game.

My stupid question is, does it matter what order you play these games in? Why they couldn't just stick to one game is beyond me

I honestly think it could work out really well. Because say in FFXIII, you travel to planet X and save the lemon queen from the gigantic race of ten year olds and their lemonade stands... and then in Versus you get to travel to the same world ten thousand years later when there are gigantic lemon people because the two races have merged. It'll just give you a cool "hmmm... that's interesting" factor without having to do a sequel or remake or anything like that. I think it's a pre-emptive strike against fanboy requests to prevent failures like FFX-2

Hmmm...I'm with the Grinch on this one. I'm wondering that if you play Versus: FFXIII first, and then FFXIII (the main game) will you be hearing about something or be referenced something that you missed because you didn't play the main game first?
I'm no doubt going to get FFXIII no matter what and play that first. Then if I can get my hands on a PS3 for a month or so, give Versus a whirl. I really don't know much of the plot in Versus thus far though; just some character screens from what I've seen.

I'm thinking it's going to be similar to the Final Fantasy Tactics universe - there will probably references galore, but there's no real need to play one before the other.
Also, same universe does not necessarily have to mean the same world, though it could. The games could just share a similar mythology, specifically in regards to the Crystals. However, if it is the same planet, but in different time periods, it seems to me that Versus is set in an older time period than FFXIII. But that's just me.

Well Final Fantasy XIII is the main game and Final Fantasy versus XIII is well probably just a spinoff with a great story. XIII is the flagship title. Xiii follows the ff series but versus does not really do.

As to looneymoon's post, that's actually an interesting thought. I merely assumed Versus would take place after FFXIII. I imagined it as FFX's FFX-2. Maybe that's not the case though... maybe Versus is the equivalent to playing as Raithwall and FFXII is the main game. There is certainly a large timespan between the two... but the events of one directly sets up the world for FFXII.

Yeah but the thing is why did they make Versus and Agito if they just have the main game which is Final Fantasy XIII? Is versus a prequel or a sequel what about Agito? This is very confusing. I know no one reps my posts Aztec!!
Well its been said before me but I'll say it again. Versus and Agito won't necessarily be direct prequels or sequels, they could be, but they could also be set 100 years before or after the events of XIII. They could be set on different planets. They could even be set at the exact same time as XIII except in a different area.
Just because they all have XIII in the title, doesn't mean their storylines have to be completely related. All we know is that they will all contain the same mythos and be set in the same universe.
Yeah If they will be set in the same universe then they will have the same summons and other stuff right. Is there a special name for summons in Final Fantasy XIII? Will there be references of the characters in the series?
No one really knows, is his point. Square has stated that the two are loosely related. They take place within the same world setting, regardless of how big that is. (I'm guessing there are multiple planets in FFXIII) But they will not be in the same timeframe. And that's really all we know...
