Okay dudes and dudettes, Girls and Boys, Gentlemen and Ladies.

-------------- I will now create a Final Boss guide for you.

"We are the Abandoned One, born but now to die. Our name is Orphan. By our hand, the world shall know redemption."

Boss - Orphan
Chapter - Thirteen, XIII
Location - Eden, Beyond the Narthex

Note: Orphan has two forms. The first form is the hard one, well for me it was, and I'm sure it will be to for you if you're not prepared.

Okay, to get started -

I recommend these members as your main party -

Lightning, Hope and Vanille.

Now on to the Paradigm Deck. This is vital to ensure that you do not wipe within the first minute of the battle.

For this battle, COMMANDO is not at all needed, if you play it right, you shouldn't need Commando.

Set your paradigm deck exactly like this.

1. Medic / Medic / Medic - Salvation
2. Ravager / Ravager / Ravager - Tri-Disaster
3. Medic / Synergist / Saboteur - Evened Odds?
4. Ravager / Medic / Medic
5. Ravager / Medic / Ravager

SET YOUR MAIN PARADIGM as MED/MED/MED (Salvation)!!!

Now on to the battle with the First Form of the Fal'cie known as ORPHAN.

When the battle starts, a few seconds into the battle, and Orphan will do the most deadliest move he has, MERCILESS JUDGMENT. Now if you don't have your main paradigm as SALVATION, then I guarantee you're gonna have a hard time healing yourself. He does Merciless Judgment quite a few times at a 3 minute interval to each one.

Once he has done Merciless Judgment, and when the party is FULLY HEALED. Quickly switch to Paradigm 3 (MED/SYN/SAB) and have Hope buff your whole party with every available spell he has, while Vanille weakens Orphan by using Deprotect, Deshell, and Imperil. Fog doesn't serve a purpose to this battle, Poison also helps, but I'm sure she will do every spell on the list as you're not controlling her. You will be controlling LIGHTNING, so your job will be to heal! Never let your guard down, ORPHAN has some very devastating attacks. His normal attacks alone do 1000+ damage if you're not careful.

Now, when your party is fully buffed with Shell, Protect, Haste, Veil, Bravery, and other spells that I may have left out. This is your chance to dish out some damage before he does Merciless Judgment again. Quickly switch to Paradigm 2 (TRI-DISASTER) and do chains of any spells you wish, but I prefer Thunder and Aero spells. Now, if he does Merciless Judgment again, or if you think you can't take anymore damage, quickly switch to Paradigm 4 (RAV/MED/MED) as you (Lightning) keep the stagger bar up while Hope and Vanille heal you and themselves to keep the party alive.

Repeat these tactics quite a few times and Orphan should be staggered in no time. Once he staggered, switch to Tri-Disaster and bring his Stagger Points up to 999% and you should be able to do 30-60K damage on him, depending on what level your weapon and Strength is.

So here's a simple breakdown for you -
  • Start of by being defensive – you’re going to need a lot of healing, so any of the decent healing paradigms is useful – get everyone back to a high HP level – the higher the better and then you can start thinking about attacking.
  • Buff, buff and more buff – you’re going to be switching to healing paradigms quite often as you buff your characters – without the buffs you’ll have no chance. You must use shell, protect and haste at least, and probably should use faith and bravery – the more buffs the better.
  • Try to debuff Orphan while buffing up – deshell and deprotect at least. This isn’t easy, but it does really help.
  • Once buffed and healed, go on the offensive with Rav/Med/Rav – the aim of course is to build the chain gauge.
  • Keep an eye on HP constantly and switch to Rav/Med/Med to heal.
  • Eventually you’ll fill the chain gauge, so now is the time to throw everything at Orphan – use tri-disaster paradigm to do most damage.
  • Keep you HP very high – but try and keep up the offensive – the more damage you do quickly the better.
  • Orphan will alternate between two forms and he will use a merciless judgment attack before changing form. This is a very dangerous attack and you really need to ensure you are fully healed and buffed – you should also switch to a strong healing paradigm while this attack is being used.
  • In the second form (consummate darkness) Orphan will heal himself, so you’re probably best re-buffing and healing yourself and waiting for the first form (consummate light) to concentrate on attack.
  • Later on Orphan will be able to heal and attack at the same time – just keep up the attacks as per the above instructions and you’ll slowly wear Orphan down – like before you must watch your HP and not let it slip too low – use Rav/Med/Med where necessary.
  • Make sure you use potions and items wisely – at times you will be poisoned or silenced and not only will you have to get rid of these ‘effects’ but you’ll also have to rebuff and probably heal yourself.
  • Be as offensive as possible but make sure to keep your buffs and HP high – even if you have Orphan staggered, you may need to use this as an opportunity to rebuff etc.
  • Be patient, this is a long arduous battle but not too difficult.
So keep everyone’s HP in the green, go full offense when you can, and try to maintain your buffs. Go hell for leather when you stagger Orphan, and you should win out fine. On a final note, Orphan will not attack while staggered, so if you’re in bad shape or your buffs are running out, you may want to pass up the opportunity for damage to heal your party instead.

Battle (Form 2)
Strangely enough, like most bosses, the second battle is actually easier than the first. Some psychological pressure is applied to your leader by placing a DOOM counter on them, but this doesn’t come into effect if you have decent characters.
  • Make sure you are buffed and healed and then use Libra to find out Orphan’s weaknesses.
  • Once heavily buffed, switch to the Rav/Med/Rav and build up the chain gauge – you’ll not do any damage while Orphan is not staggered, so getting the chain gauge filled is important – switch to Rav/Med/Med when needed, the aim again to keep the HP high.
  • Once staggered attack as much as possible – use Tri-disaster or your best combat paradigm to inflict as much damage as possible – the stagger lasts a long time, so attack as much as possible – keep an eye on buffs and HP and re-do where needed.
  • As soon as the stagger ends, go into hyper defensive mode – Orphan will use a rebirth attack and you’ll need to be defensive and heal.
  • Rebuff and heal as needed, and debuff Orphan if possible.
  • Continue to use the above method and re-stagger Orphan – it should take two or three staggers to defeat Orphan.
Well done - you've done it!!!

Thanks for the guide sir!

I really didn't read the actual guide, but seeing the Paradigm setups was enough to help me, seeing as how I was struggling to keep up with 2 Medics. I think I used a different setup for the 5th one, I believe I used Rav/Med/Syn and I added a 6th setup of Com/Rav/Rav. The last setup was mainly for Barthandelus before Orphan and to steady the Chain if necessary.

It is a nice, well thought out strategy though, so I'm sure it will help someone out. Excellent work!

I call this the universal "how to beat any boss" method. It's really cheap, but considering how some of the bosses are super cheap, I suppose using this method is justifiable, and plus, it's pretty much a guaranteed 5 stars.

Using the paradigms MED-SYN-SAB, MED-MED-MED, and RAV-RAV-RAV, I beat Orphan in less than 3 minutes and beat the second form of orphan on the first stagger. Characters were Light, Vanille, and Hope each at around 7000hp and only had maxed out three core roles for each.
