Name – Filendie Garren

Title – The Tainted Mage – Filendie has been branded with this due to the unique reaction his eyes have with magic. He really doesn't like it very much.

Alignment – Neutral Good

Age – 27

Appearance/Attire/Armour – His slightly feminine face is well curved and appears to be sculpted from the finest pale clay by the finest sculptor, almost too perfect. His perfect features are framed by Jet Black Hair, which is neatly swept back away from his eyes and flows freely down to his broad shoulders. When even the barest spot of sun light catches his long mane it changes from a midnight sky to storm of slivers and grays.

His slender figure makes him seem fragile and delicate but under the skin he is somewhat battle hardened and won’t hesitate to defend himself or fight for what he believes in. His small frame is only very slightly toned and stands five foot eleven inches tall. His long black leather trench-coat comfortably hides a tight black tank top and a figure hugging pair of boot-cut leather trousers that rest on black leather shoes.This gives him minimal protection as armor. He also has a pendant made from his mothers favourite amathyst stone. His eyes are tainted through years of constant use in the dark arts of magic, making it appear like his eyes have absorbed the very ink from the pages he once studied from. Whether day or night his eyes remain as two all seeing black pupils, making him seem emotionless. Also when he uses magic without his staff the white of his eyes cloud over to black and continue to do so until he has stopped using magic.

Personality – He may look like the dark crusader or the wannabe bad boy, but he is actually quite a nice guy. His abilities show a different side of him as an icy tempered black mage and has eyes as dark as a midnight sky. But in truth he likes to meet new people and show them the side of him that is kind and thoughtful when he is in the mood. His image is only something he likes, as a youngster he was quite depressed so it has rubbed off on him in adult hood.

First Impression – Filendie’s appearance is somewhat unsociable to most people. To them he seems the unwelcoming type of person that wouldn’t even spit on you if you were on fire. In truth he is very slightly shy, but only in general social situations.

Strength – Filendie isn’t the strongest of people, he has devoted his life to the art of magic and this doesn’t leave much time for working out. He can lift heavy objects that a normal everyday person could lift but not much more. With a punch be could knock a person out if he had aimed and timed it well enough but this isn’t something he does very often.

Vitality – Physically Filendie can take a medium amount of punishment. He isn’t a battle hardened fighter but he has been in a very large number of battles so isn’t a pushover. He has however a very good resistance to magic. His constant use of it and the magical energies that run through him give him some protection from other types of magic.

Speed – Slightly faster than the average running or sprinting man. He knows that sometimes you need to run and won’t hesitate to do so. He can leap to the side quite quickly, but not at any superhuman speeds.

Stamina – Filendie can fight for a good amount of time but it would depend who against. If it was against a large group of people without using magic then not a great deal of time, but if he were fighting for his life then slightly longer. His lack of physical fighting means that he isn’t someone that could fight for a major amount of time, saying that he has been on missions that last a good few days and he has managed to do it with only a few breaks before resting at night. He can run for three or four miles before having to drop into a jog or walk for a short time, then start running again for another three or four miles. As for Magical stamina this is something that comes in buckets for Filendie. He has been practicing it since he was very young and has grown a very large mana pool that he can draw from, he can last large amounts of time with medium use of his magical abilities, but naturally if he uses large amounts of magic it will drain him quicker, the more magic he uses the weaker he will get physically if used a lot

Reflexes – This is something, as a mage, he is good at. While casting magic or waiting for the opportunity he can be very quick to avoid confrontation. He can dodge punches and fast moving projectiles rather well, but if it came to very fast moving such as bullets, arrows shot at very high speeds it would be pot luck, but if he could he would rather resort to magic to help.

Fighting Style – He has been trained well in fighting but mostly defensive moves to keep himself safe. He can disarm people and knock them down without much effort by using the person’s size, weaknesses and vulnerabilities against them.

Weapons – The only weapon he has is a light, durable metal staff with wisps and hues of black and dark purple running down the shaft. On the top is three prongs that jut out and then come together to hold a white roughly cut crystal in place; this helps him focus his magic and concentrate. When he uses magic the white crystal clouds over to black instead of his eyes.

Abilities – N/A

Magic – Note: Filendie’s magic is very strong, he has spent his life devoted to improving it but the great talent and power he has attainted is something that has grown within him unnaturally. As a result he is unable to cast a spell without side effects unless he has his staff. The staff acts as a suppressant and keeps his power in check and at a normal level for him to use safely. If he uses magic without his staff he may suffer headaches and migraines, nose bleeds and periods when it is difficult to concentrate, also his magic will be overpowered and will most likely backlash at him and could injure himself as well as his target.

Ice/Water Magic: Filendie is able to manipulate and control water in his surrounding environment but he cannot create it out of thin air. He can draw moisture out of the air but there is only so much moisture in certain areas until it runs dry. He is able to control water and ice in a 15 meter radius from himself but can throw it further. He can control water/ice four to five times his own size with his staff and each use of magic of this size take around 3/4% of his mana reserves due to the amount he has.

Air Magic: Filendie is able to manipulate and control air in his surrounding environment but he cannot create it, so if he is in a small locked room it would be much harder to use. He is able to control air in a 15 meter radius from himself. He can control four to five times his own size at one time with his staff and each use of magic of this size take around 3/4% of his mana reserves due to the amount he has.

Earth Magic: Filendie is able to manipulate and control the ground, earth and rocks (but finds it difficult to control manmade substances like tarmac and cement) in his surrounding environment but he cannot create it. If he is in a metal room he wouldn’t be able to use it. If he was on a pavement it would be difficult to use unless he split the ground to use any earth underneath. He is able to control earth in a 15 meter radius from himself. He can control four to five times his own size at one time with his staff and each use of magic of this size take around 3/4% of his mana reserves due to the amount he has.

Without his staff the radius increases to around 20 metres and the amount of the element he can manipulate increases top 6 to 7 times his own size. However some examples of backlash are hands and other body parts getting coated in frost and almost freezing, his body temperature dropping, air whipping back and knocking him off of his feet, across a room or knocking him out. Earth shifting under him or turning against him or any of the above just exploding while casting or using. He would never use magic without his staff by choice, he is afraid of what could happen to himself and others.

With all of Filendie’s magic and the nature of only being able to manipulate it, as soon as he grasps and pulls the magic within himself he is able to control the element straight away, but it depends what he chooses to do with it and how quickly he needs it as to how much mana is used, how long it takes to accomplish and what mental and physical state he is in to form the element.

The following are only examples of what things he can do. All sizes/area of effects/damage and effects can be altered but are restricted to his power levels.

Water/Ice Manipulations

Barrier: The caster uses the nearest available source of water and channels it quickly in front of himself before freezing it into a think barrier of ice between himself or whatever he is protecting himself from. This can only take a few heavy hits before breaking but is more of a deterrent than anything.

Mist: Can cool down the moisture in the air in an area and make it difficult for people and himself to see properly.

Shard: Pulls water out of the air and forms it into a frozen shard, which is then thrown at a target. It is only made of ice so wouldn’t do much against someone with heavier armour.

Ball: Pulls water/moisture out of the air or from an available source of water and forms it into a frozen ball which can be thrown at opponents.

Restraint: Uses an available water source to surround an opponent’s limb/limbs and hold them temporarily in place.

Brittle: Can use his ability to deep freeze an object to such an extent could become somewhat brittle and easier to break. This can take quite a bit of time to do.

Rush: Using a heavy amount of magic, he is able to channel a large amount of available water and channels as much of it as possible to overwhelm opponents.

Whip: Uses a thin but sharp whip of available water to strike or distract an opponent.


Earth Manipulations

Wall: Raises the earth and forces it together so that it is denser in order to separate him from a situation, alternatively he could use a slab of rock to do the same job if available.

Pelt: Uses the power of earth to gather as many rocks and pebbles as he can find and use them to barrage his opponents.

Quicksand: Can shift the ground underneath in an attempt to trap someone or something in solidified earth.

Avalanche: Can use a nearby face of rock or water and shift the element enough in order to make it collapse in an avalanche.

Spike: Is able to dig deep and raise a large spike or earth, if done correctly could take out a moving vehicle.

Batter: Similar to the spike, the caster is able to raise the earth in a dense column but could make it smaller and blunt in order to deliver a large hit on an opponent.


Air Manipulations

Shield: Is able to gather and push the air into a dense dome around him to protect himself.

Deflect: Is able create a very strong gust to knock projectiles slightly off course if the occasion arose.

Suffocate: Is able to remove some/if not all air from a small area making it difficult for a target to breathe.

Knockdown: Can channel and very strong but small gust to knock an opponent off of their feet if done correctly.

Wind: With heavy use of his magic Filendie can create very powerful winds to overwhelm one or multiple opponents.

History – Filendie lived in peace and happiness in Kilika. He had no brothers or sisters only a mother and father who he loved dearly. His farther helped out the local shop while his Mother travelled to and from the temple carrying supplies. He heard the adventures and the danger of the Summoner’s pilgrimages in the past, and that only a certain few have ever made it and defeated sin, the other attempts were wasted, some didn’t reach their destination in time and some didn’t even live through the journey. These facts Filendie liked, he found the danger in some way thrilling and exiting and found himself asking around of how to become a guardian.

He was in luck that some people in his village were already in training so he took it upon himself to join in. He bought a rusty dagger at the local shop and this was his acclaimed weapon. Every day he met up with his two friends Valdeen and Xsyken and went into Kilika woods fighting the lesser fiends. When they felt confident enough the party of three travelled to the temple and back fighting all the way. He found the art of Black magic his favorite kind of fighting and quickly learnt how to control it and made a good contribution battling the Elementals in the forest. Although they were starting to look like an unbeatable party the forest king Lord Ouchu attacked the three boys. Xsyken was seriously injured, the remaining two (Filendie and Valdeen) trained even harder in order to one day beat Lord Ouchu.

Before his training had finished he heard about lady Yuna and that she was in training to become a summoner. With this he said his farewell to friends and family and travelled to Besaid, as he arrived on the S.S. Liki He saw Yuna and her guardians waiting for the boat. His heart raced, he wanted this more than anything, Filendie ran and hid under the ship, he got himself ready, combed his hair and practiced a few times asking to be a guardian. He finally felt ready; he went up on deck and bumped into a Ronso. And then he saw her. Filendie introduce himself and told her why he had came, but she turned him down. This did not dampen his spirit, but instead took it as a sign to continue training. He wanted another chance at proving his worth to lady Yuna, as he mopped around below deck thinking up a scheme Sin attacked the boat.
He rushed up top on deck just to be thrown back down by a wall of water. Yuna and her guardians fought but Sin got away and headed towards Kilika. The boats driver increased the pace and headed straight to their destination. When they arrived Sin had devastated his home town. He found his Home destroyed and his Mother and Father had been killed, after the sending he went to the shell of his home and found his mothers Amethyst crystal, he took it and got it made into a necklace, with this item he managed to put on a brave face and helped repair parts of Kilika, it was hard but the remaining survivors struggled through.

After the dock was safe he travelled to Luca. Having found Sin had also attacked the blitz ball stadium he got the wood and other things he needed and went straight back to Kilika. At that point everything hit him at once, the death of his parents and friends, loss of his home and memories and the total destruction of Kilika. He grew so angry he froze the ground he stood on; this act was fuelled by pure anger and after this, every time he uses black magic the white in his eyes turn black. After this he tried to find out what was wrong and awaited news of the calm. He took it upon himself to protect Kilika but when others could protect it, Filendie left because there was nothing there for him, only disappointment and bad or wrecked memories.

Many Years Later

The years past, the calm held and Filendie grew older, wiser and more battle hardened with experience. The search to find out what was wrong with his eyes when using magic was forgotten as he got used to the stares and nicknames he had acquired. His constant use of black magic had stained his iris’ black and the more he used the better he got at it. He entered contest after contest and won, his display of magic blowing people away as his control got to its peak while he was still in his early twenties and he still grew in power.

Battles became easy and boring as he grew cocky and relied so much on his power he gained a little weight however, this was short lived. In the contests he entered he found that ever passing battle his control faltered enough to finally loose his first fight and these were only the beginnings of his problems.

He grew in power more and more, so much he surpassed even the Elder Black Mages who had been training for over seventy years. They told him to stop, to not use magic as much as he did or he would end up doing more harm than good, eventually turning into a fiend or becoming a bad person. He knew they were right, but the pull of magic was strong and he couldn’t fight it. He carried on regardless of what the Elders had told him, believing that he could control his ever growing power, but the problems continued to get worse.

His power grew unstable and dangerous to himself as well as others but he still didn’t stop. One day the elders found him propped up against a half melted tree that his power had frozen solid, magic radiating from him in waves. Three of the Elders drained as much power from him as they could handle and presented him with a staff, a focus to help him control his magic.

The Elders with their new found strength struggled to control it between the three of them but managed to adapt to it. Filendie was trained how to work his magic with the staff but was still stronger than any individual Black Mage Elder. The Tainted Warrior Filendie left the elders with a promise to not let the power overwhelm and take him over, and he stuck to that promise to this day… He now wonders the world trying to find out why the lifestream had cursed, or gifted him with the power he has.

Personality

Could use a bit more expansion here. Here are a few questions to use as a jumping off point:
-How is your character around friends?
-How is you character if alone and bored?
-How is s/he if insulted by someone larger than him/herself?
-if someone accidentally trips and spills a mug of water on you char, but apologizes after, how does your char react?
-What look does your char have on the following:
|-Killing the innocent.
|-Killing evildoers (bandits and the like).
|-Killing in self defense regardless of the person.


Manipulations

Need an estimate as to how much mana each Manipulation would use. I know it's probably inexact, but a range, or a general ballpark figure would be good.
