Hi!,
This is about to get very nerdy/obsessive... you've been warned :P

Okay, so with the recent release of Final Fantasy X's double LP set I have noticed that there is something missing in the vinyl collection - FINAL FANTASY IX! I love the others but to see VII, VIII & now X makes me very concerned that IX may not get the attention it deserves... so I have been raking my brains on how to make a sales pitch to S-E to fix this tragedy! (I've basically done the work for them :P)

I have taken a lot of time to make a tracklist which represents the game and it's progression from start to finish - I've had to condense a lot of tracks to fit onto the LP size of 23 minutes but I've squeezed everything I can into the allotted time limit! I'll be interested to see how you feel I've done and if you think I should make any amendments!

Here to you is my pitch for the Final Fantasy IX Original Soundtrack on Vinyl!

Design Choices
I wanted to talk about some of the design choices, being a picture disc release and a double-LP vinyl set I have a least 4 images to make use of. The important thing to keep in mind is consistency with the previous Picture Disc releases. the previous releases used the Promotional CGI art used for the games. So I have taken that idea and combined it with the CGI screens shown on FF9's title video:

The set back with this is that it only shows 4 of the main cast. I would like to have shown the other 4 but i feel the introductory cast makes sense. I would have liked to have included Kuja, this is something I am still debating but finding a suitable image is hard! If I were to do so, I think I would change Steiner for this image here:

But once again this then breaks the consistency of the title images and promotional CGI shots which the other picture discs used.

I have also thought about using environments - the VII LP set has a shot of Midgar, so I could include a shot of the Alexander Summon battle:
ff9wlpr05-1920x1200.jpg
And have the flip-side include the opening shot:
ff9wlpr08-1920x1200.jpg

I like this Idea but how could have match the other LP disc with the characters? The other image I have found which inclludes all the other characters is this:
FF9_VAC_04.jpg

While this would include the full cast on one LP I just feel the image doesn't have much OOMPH! Nor does it match the designs of the previous releases well...

That's my current thoughts on the design of the LP Discs. I also have ideas for the packaging! The previous releases are already inconsistent:
FFVII BLACK:
FF7VI.JPG

FFVIII - SLIVER:
FF8VI.JPG

FFX - BLACK:
FF10VI.JPG

Had FF8's Vinyl had the black packaging this wouldn't even be a debate but I wanted to even out FF8's oddity but I didn't want to copy the silver design so the next best suitable design seems in my mind to be gold.

Tracklisting Notes:
Here is a section to talk about the tracklisting!

My main objective is to have the order of the tracklisting follow the tracks as you would hear them in chronological order, so the listener follows the jounrey via the soundtrack.

Side A
- Opening with A Place Called Home is essential!
- I decided to choose Sky of Alexandira over Memories Erased by a Storm for the opening, I know MoaS is prior but I think SoA has a much grander magical quality!
- I chose Cid's Theme over the actual Lindblum theme as It is the 1st theme your hear when entering Lindblum and it stands out more.

Side B
- I Wanted to present Tantalus Group and I think this jingle at the start of Side B works.
- I like how Freya's Theme & Eternal Harvest tie-together and present the transition from game disc 1 and 2
- I was debating Eiko's Theme as I wanted a lot of character themes in the listing but I feel Madain Sari's Theme presents the sense of the jounrey better along with Black Mage's Theme. These section presents that continent.

Side C
- I think after Iifa Tree's ending for Side B, Devil's Ambition gives a nice eriee continnuation from that.
- I struggled between Terra & Bran Bal.
- Unforgettable Sorrow offers a conclusion to Side C with a sense of hope.

Side D
- I wanted Side D to basically be the last part of the game Disc & feel the Silver Dragon Theme kicks that momentum off!
- Time is shorts as the tracks are long but as I have mentioned I would ike the English version of Melodies of life - The Japan OST version is 7:35 & would exceed the lenght of the LP Side.

Other tracks I would have liked to include!:
There's always going to be tracks you wish to include whne doing a task like this, here are some of mine which nearly made the cut!
Jesters of the Moon
Sleeping Forrest
Memories of that Day
Dali
A Face Forgotten
Daugerro
Treno
Songs of Memories
Aloha De Chocobo
Tetra Master Theme

My next step is to make a video on YouTube with 10-second samples of the full-track list and show an image of the side playing - I hope to progress this as a sales pitch to S-E! I really don't want Final Fantasy IX to be forgotten on this as the game is just as important as it's companions - As is the musIc!

So any thoughts? I've had this in my head-space all week and this weekend I've finally had the time to compose it all together! Any ideas on what to change would be greatly appreciated as I want to get a more finalised version before I push this forward! Thanks for your time!

You really have put a lot of thought into this!
This sounds like a great idea.

Listening to your snippets, it reminded me how much I absolutely adore the FFIX soundtrack. Some of Nobuo's finest work for sure.

The design you've proposed is also rather striking. I definitely agree with having the character faces from the promo art. They would look great.

As for tracks I'd have liked on there, I would have loved 'Bran Bal'. However, I fully understand not everything could make the cut and the whole Terra segment is well-represented with the arguably more important tracks anyway. Likewise, I'd regret the absence of some of the tracks connected with the play 'I Want To Be Your Canary', but you do include the Tantalus Theme, as well as 'Vamo Alla Flamenco', so you got that covered that way too.

I like the order, and the selections are well-justified by your post. This gives most of the vibes without posting tracks that double up on the same motif too much.
Some might question why you’ve included Amarant’s theme and not more significant characters like Steiner, but I think it works. Beatrix’s 'Rose of May' and their shared moment 'Something to Protect' sort of covers that ground a bit, and Amarant’s theme is one of the coolest character themes of all time imo. He’s a mysterious character who joins late in the game, but his theme kicks ass and fits him perfectly.

No love for Quina though? lol. :thehead:

Yeah Terra & Bran Bal was a ery tough call, I knew I wanted one of them but couldn't justify both! It really came down to a matte of lenght of the track more than anything.

As for Quina, as a character they don't do much for me within the game or story - I like the other characters we see of the same race but Quina is as effective as Vaan in XII.

As for Stieners themes, I find a lot of them plod along, they're fine but not as engaging as some. My main reason for Somethign to Protect was to get a slice of that Alexandria conflict in there.

I like Amarant's theme and I also wanted to expand that area of the game more, part of me REALLY wanted to put Memories of that Day After the Lifa Tree but I felt having two negatively toned tracks after another would be a bit much - I do think it is very haunting especially in the scene by the beach after 2-Disc climactic conflict.

I feel if any portion of the game is lacking it is mid-Disc 3 where you are on the Fogotten Continent. I wanted to put more tracks in but felt none of them really stod out as much. If anything may The Four Medallions would be a nice entry.

Great news!
It is as if your wish has conjured this into existence!
Can you do something similar for a Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remake next, please? :argor:

Some of the tracks (not all) roughly correlate with your choices and placements too, so that is an additional layer of awesome.

Oh it's fantastic! I would have never been able to accept Final Fantasy IX being so neglected! Croc would be an absolute bagner! I can already hear the main menu theme in my mind - I never got around to playing Croc 2 mind you, I know it played more open world-ish like Spyro (With the worst draw-distance ever :P)

Interesting to see they chose my alternative design with the Alexandria castles - can't blame them from looking at the promo images it was a good choice! Not so keen on the character prfoiles being cropped but at least if gives dues to every party member.

As for the track selection it is mostly on point.I'm thrilled to see they start with A place To Call Home - Pinnacle of Introductory tracks and instatly what I thiunk of when I think of FF9's OST. I'm sad to see a lack of love given towards the later portion of Disc 2 on the Outer Continent. You have Eiko's Theme at least but considerign how important the Iifa Tree is in the game I felt that, moment should have been included. Along with the Terra/Bran Bal - But at least we got Pandemonium fo Garland. I'm curious to what rendition of Melodies of Life we will get at the end of the set too - As the English version wasn't on the OST.

Overall I'm very happy! I just made my Pre-Orders! The UK/EU site has now been updated too!:
