Ahem. You're all gonna feel dumb when I say this.

GRAND THEFT AUTO

I was going to say this but I didn't bother posting at all for some reason but I would say that Grand Theft Auto III had a bigger impact on gaming as it basically created the Sandbox genre and many try to copy GTA.

The first one was a hit but it wasnt until 3 came out that it became influential.

I'd have to say Halo is one of the more recent influential games, a hint of Halo can be found in just about any console FPS game you play now, be it from Timesplitters: Future Perfect adopting a grenade button and melle attack right down to more battlefield-esque shooters like Resistance appearing. I really wish it weren't the case though....

Halo originated from Doom, Doom brought first person shooter out of the woodwork. Before Doom, the only huge first person shooter game I can remember was Operation Wolf (Yeah I'm an old gamer).

Halo isn't anything compared to Doom. Doom was the first, Half Life was the game to take it beyond a simple mission based design. if you look back now, every FPS game today doesn't split up into levels like Doom. they all look back at what HL accomplished and have imitated it since...

Agreed, Half Life should be getting the credit not Halo.

Well, there are the obvious ones (Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Zelda), but a little-known game called Streets of Rage kick-started the entire genre, or the very least, made it popular.

Then how do you explain Medal of Honour Underground?
I'll be honest, I can barely remember what Underground was like, since that was about 6-8 years ago. I enjoyed it but never played it all that much. I'm not denying that there were games that had previously done the things Halo that did ( which is one of my big complaints about Halo ), but to me it does feel like it's creeping into other games. Hardly surprising when you consider how popular it is.

I think Final Fight should be mentioned too, one of the first in it's genre, a interesting game too...
I agree on the other games mentioned so far..

I pretty much agree with you all. Tetris was one of the most influential games - everyone played it. Super Mario Bros. from the very first Nintendo wins too. Then there's Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tekken, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, etc.

The first FPS was Wolfenstein 3D, Operation Wolf light gun wielding on NES could be called a FPS of sort, but didn't define the coming genre.

The light gun genre was on the other hand defined by Duck Hunt. Some platforms used the mouse as a crosshair in these light gun games, but no weapon in view in the bottom of the screen in neither.

Important games:

The starting heat:
Tennis for two
Space War
Pong

Firsts:
Pac-Man - First main character
Ms. Pac-Man - First female main character
Metroid - First female main character with a quest (except eating)

Genre defined:
Tetris - Puzzles
King's Quest - Adventure
The Secret of Monkey Island - Adventure perfected
Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards - Adult gaming
Metal Gear Solid - Stealth
Bubble Bobble - Platformer
Super Mario Bros. - Side scrolling platformer
Grand Theft Auto III - Sandbox
Championship Manager - Soccer manager

is the first that come to mind, I have to "Press Play on Tape" to remember more :)
