Several hundred years from now the final frontier is thoroughly colonized. Years of fighting has made the Earth a desert wasteland, and its inhabitants struggle for survival every day. This land of death cannot compare to the technological utopia of colonized outer space from which the people of Earth have been cut off for several centuries.
In outer space, human civilization extends from Venus all the way out beyond Pluto in the form of several dozen space colonies and the now terraformed Mars. The technology of space grants humans easy travel within the solar system, robotic prosthetic limbs (even going so far as full-body prosthetics), and even eternal life. Using nanotechnology, the human lifespan has increased indefinitely. It is not uncommon to find a human who is 300 or 400 years old. That is not to say, however, that humans can no longer die. Although the cure for old age has been found, war still rages. People are still killed.
Despite this, children are no longer needed. With the death toll so relatively low, and the birthrate high there is the threat of overpopulation. Children have lost their value. A child unfortunately born in this era is either abandoned by their parents and made to survive by themselves, or they are captured by the government and made to fight in wars in place of their immortal counterparts. On Mars, there is such a war.
Mars is divided into two nations. First is the Great Martian Republic (GRM), which conforms to the same ideals of immortality as the rest of society in space, and then there is the Holy Matriarchy of Mars (HMM), which shuns the nanotechnology used to extend humans' lives. The HMM believes that death is the natural way in the existence of humanity and have lifespans that resemble those of humans that lived on Earth long ago.
It is here on Mars that the GRM gathers children to train as soldiers to fight against the HMM. For them, if these children die, there is no loss because here, children are not the future; they are a menace.

In this RP, you would start out as a character aged 6 - 13 and will eventually become a child soldier. The goal of most children in the GRM is to survive long enough to escape to the HMM where children are valued. To them, it really is a sort of holy land. I may extend the RP beyond this.
This RP idea is based on the setting of the manga, Battle Angel Alita: Last Order (Gunnm: Last Order in Japan). I took the majority of the details from the setting of the manga, but I changed a few little things. I might go back and change it to be closer to the setting in the manga. (If you want a good idea of how everything works in this universe, you should read the third volume; it's pretty much dedicated to explaining everything that happens in space).
