It's a phrase that most employed people here in the UK dread to hear, I'm not sure how the system works in other area's of the world. I'm guessing the same thing happens, it's just called something different.

I work for a large company that used to have a reputation for making people redundant, but improved since I started working there. I have now been there for 4 years and they've never hinted that it could be a possibility. You can probably see where I'm going with this. I'm off work this week and found out through a friend that there is now a very strong possibility that our area could be hit by redundancy later on this year. Needless to say, I wasn't contacted by a manager of any sort .

Now, I've since spoken to a manager (I had to contact them!) and they assured me that my job would be safe, due to the success I've had over the past 2 years. Great - but call me a cynic if I don't believe you. This is the first time that I've ever been involved in any redundancy situation so I'm not sure what the common protocol is, but one thing bothers me. That thing being the uncertainty of it all - the generalisation of the whole process:

"Oh, there could be redundancies in our area. Maybe. If there are, it would be towards the end of this year, again, maybe. We don't know. Don't worry though."

This is the answer I was given this morning after I asked what was going on. It leaves me feeling very uncertain and frustrated. On one hand I'm glad that I've been given the heads up that this could happen. On the other, I'm pissed at how non-committal the company are being about the situation. Part of me can't help but think that the dreaded word redundancy is being used as a tactic, with the objective being to get employees to jump ship before they have to look into laying people off. I'd be livid if that were to be the case, but I doubt I'll ever know.

Forgive my lack of knowledge and experience around this whole situation. I know how lucky I am to not have been in this situation before; especially in today's work climate. Have you guys been in this situation before? I'd be interested to hear your experiences, if you'd like to share them.

Apologies for the rant. I only got confirmation of this today, so I'm a little bit concerned :gasp:
