Monster Hunter: Heart's Courage

Prelude

Lady Renecia was known to all as The Goddess of the Hunt. Her skill was such that she could hunt anything, be it on land, sea or sky. In time, she attracted a following – aspiring hunters who sought to follow in her footsteps, blacksmiths seeking to promote their wares, ambitious traders seeking to sell her followers their equipment, and those seeking a refuge from the monsters that plagued them in their daily lives. Eventually a small trading town, named Renecia village, after the huntress herself, was founded, growing into a thriving community. Renecia stayed there for a time, teaching others the way of the hunt until, one morning, she vanished, setting out for The Abyss and never returning. Others tried to follow her and they, too, were lost. It seemed that the Lady Renecia had found a mark worth her match, although none could either confirm or deny this.

That was hundreds of years ago. Now, The Dragon’s Claw, a guild founded by the lady Renecia shortly before she vanished, acts as protectors for the town. The Tiger’s Fang, a second guild, was founded not long after and, whilst the guild is less experienced, the new blood helped to stave off the monster attacks, as not even the Dragon’s Claw can be everywhere at once. For, since Lady Renecia’s passing, monster attacks have steadily increased, until it has reached a point where both guilds can barely protect the town and have had to send out requests for new recruits, new blood that, whilst in no short supply, is sorely lacking in skill for the most part.

Monsters never seen before are appearing in areas previously thought devoid of life, and those existing monsters the guilds are used to dealing with have become far more violent and daring, making several excursions into the village itself before being driven back. Plus, if the rumours are accurate, the one monster that Lady Renecia could not defeat has returned to the lands once again and stirs in the Abyss…

The World of
Monster Hunter: Heart's Courage

Renecia Village – A small village founded by the Lady Renecia and her father, which has slowly built up over the years to house several hundred people, including two guilds, the Dragon’s Claw and the Tiger’s Fang. Renecia Village is home to a wide variety of people, and has it’s very own trading port, blacksmith and item shop. The guild headquarters, once located at opposite ends of the village, are now side-by-side, and whilst both recruit separate members and undertake separate quests, they are often considered to be one guild, and will undertake joint missions if the situation requires it. The two Guild Masters are both widely respected, and considered the leaders of the village.

Guild Rank 1 areas

Jigan Prarie – The perfect place for beginner hunters to hone their skills, Jigan Prarie consists of mostly open grasslands, with a small watering hole at its centre. Herbivores run free and mostly uncaring, and those carnivores that frequent here are, for the most part, small, although they often travel in packs. Although on occasion a larger wyvern may decide to feed here.

Grings Swamp – A dark and thoroughly miserable place, Grings Swamp is home to many unusual monsters not found anywhere else. Occasionally a more powerful monster may make its way from the sea into the waters of Grings Swamp, in which case less experienced hunters are strongly advised to run like hell…

Guild Rank 2 areas

Yghatan Jungle – A hot, tropical climate awaits all those who arrive here, and those who venture here having recently just advanced to GR2 will find that the stakes have upped considerably. Monsters are bigger, uglier, and considerably harder to kill. Nonetheless, with perseverance – and a couple of teammates – hunters should not encounter anything that should pose impossible to tackle at their current level of skill.

Laraia Highlands – Laraia Highlands is all hills and little else. It’s difficult to see what is ahead of you, and considering that Deviljho occasionally stumble into this area, that can be a very bad thing. Monsters here tend to flee at the first sign of trouble, making it advisable to carry traps, or split into two groups. Of course, a small group that comes across a more powerful monster in their attempts to corner a weaker one will find themselves in a considerable amount of trouble…

Guild Rank 3 areas

Giroth Caves – An extensive labyrinth of caves that runs below Giroth Mountain, the Giroth Caves have suffered several cave-ins recently, closing many known passages and opening up entirely new territories. One such passage leads to an underground lake, home to a monster of legends, long since forgotten.

Giroth Mountain – Once an active volcano, Giroth Mountain has since grown dormant, and is now covered with snow, making it a home for many unique and ferocious monsters. Few have reached its peak and, of those who have, only one since Lady Renecia has defeated the monster that dwells there.

Guild Rank 4 areas

Coral Loch – A lake just on the outskirts of Renecia Village which has since been closed off, due to the various monsters that have taken up residence there. Traders and fishermen now have to sail across the ocean to reach Renecia, rather than taking the shortcut across the Loch, lest they want their boats sunk. The water attracts many herbivores which, in turn, attracts numerous carnivores. Many monsters from other areas gather here.

Raraku Desert – A lifeless wasteland that only the most experienced hunters venture into – unprepared hunters will find their energy sapped by the desert’s blistering heat during the day, and it’s long, bitterly cold nights. Large areas of the Sironi Desert are like oceans of sand, impassable unless you go by boat, and boats are vulnerable to attack from Jhen Mohran, which have not been seen before now for centuries…

Guild Rank 5 areas

Hiroth Volcano – Twin to Giroth Mountain, Hiroth Volcano has recently become active once again, prompting both guilds to restrict it to all but the most experienced hunters. Monsters often group together for protection from the elements, and those who do not tread carefully when hunting their marks could find more than one problem on their hands…

Trien Ruins – Ruins of a city that existed before Lady Renecia’s time, many ferocious monsters make these ruins their nesting site, and many congregate around the ruins of the Collosseum that was the city’s heart before it was destroyed.

Guild Rank G Areas

The Abyss – A large, gaping wound in the Earth that only Lady Renecia has dared to climb into, The Abyss is given a wide berth by even the most daring of the guild’s members. Recently, earthquakes and terrifying roars have been heard coming from The Abyss, suggesting the beast that resides within it, the only monster that has ever bested the Lady Renecia, is active once again.

Hunter's Guide:
Guild Ranks, Weapons and Quests

Guild Ranks

The measure of a hunter is his or her Guild Rank. As a hunter completes more requests, their reputation – and thus, their Guild Rank – increases, allowing them to take on more challenging requests to slay more powerful monsters, and find better materials.

Note: Gathering quests won’t add to your Guild Rank. If you want to advance, you need to take on monsters.

Guild Rank 1 – The starting level for all hunters. GR1 Hunters have access to weapons of up to a level 2 rarity, as well as the Jigan Prarie and Grings Swamp areas.

Guild Rank 2 – Unlocked after completing five GR1 quests, GR2 Hunters have access to weapons of up to a level 3 rarity, as well as all GR2 quests of previous areas and the Yghatan Jungle and Laraia Highlands areas.

Guild Rank 3 – Unlocked after completing seven GR2 quests, GR3 Hunters have access to all weapons of up to a level 4 rarity, as well as all GR3 quests of previous areas and the Giroth Caves and Giroth Mountain areas.

Guild Rank 4 – Unlocked after completing ten GR3 quests, GR4 hunters have access to all weapons of up to a level 5 rarity, as well as + armour. All GR4 quests of previous areas, as well as the Coral Loch and Raraku Desert areas, are also unlocked.
Guild Rank 5 – Unlocked after completing thirteen GR4 quests, GR5 hunters have access to all weapons of up to a level 6 rarity, as well as all GR5 quests of previous areas.

Guild Rank G - The best of the best who have completed all previous quests, G hunters have access to all weapons and advanced G-level armour, as well as some exclusive quests not available to lesser hunters. They are also allowed to venture into The Abyss, to face their destiny and, hopefully, restore peace to the land once more.
