Sorry if this was already been asked, (and if has, ita probably good idea to make it into a sticky thread) what do you think is the most under-rated, over-rated FD game?

Mine are

Underrated: Final Fantasy Adventure - half the time I insist my friends to try it out but hate the graphics of the original gameboy or say they already played sword of mana (which is not the same). Its a great story, a lot of failure in the main protagonist, if this was made for gameboy color or they release the mobile version here, it would be amazing.

Also, final Fantasy adventure introduced both moogles and chocobo to the west since ff2 never released at the time.

Overrated: Final Fantasy Xiii - You all know why. The fact that there is still a fanbase shocks me to this day. I believe any form of fanbase of this game of the ff-oriented is what j consider overrated.

ok, your turn.

That's interesting definition of overrated you're operating with. FFXIII wouldn't cross my mind for that category because it's pretty much maligned in most places of the internet, and I can only think of one website where its fans congregate to, and chase out the "haters". I guess my definition of the word will be whichever game receives all the accolades it gets, but I subjectively don't think it deserves most of them.

Underrated

+ Final Fantasy XII.

Two things tend to happen with this game. People either tend to largely ignore discussing it, because it's sandwiched between two other major offline titles, or when they do talk about FFXII, it's referred to as a boring tripe, an aberration of the franchise name, and/or a piece of shit. And pretty much nearly everyone in real life I have had a conversation about Final Fantasy with (there aren't that many of them), thinks FFXII is donkey balls because "there's way too much combat going on!" and "it has no story"!

The poor fools. They just passed over what was probably the last great offline Final Fantasy mainline title, and one of the last good games that Square-Enix have made. :ari:

Overrated

+ Final Fantasy X.

Blasphemy! How could you possibly list this PERFECT game as being overrated when it's one of the best things ever crafted and laboured by man? Easily. Because I just think it's an okay game. The thing I liked the most about FFX is its OST, which I loved enough to purchase from the iTunes store. I acknowledge that FFX's battle system is arguably the most refined of the turn-based JRPG subgenre, but since, I have preferred FFX-2's system, while my tastes have switched somewhat to action battle systems with ideally, some emphasis on your character positioning.

Its story is good in most places if you overlook some bits of silliness like the reasons for Yuna's proposal, how Yevon managed to organise an entire (bogus) wedding virtually five minutes after kidnapping Yuna from her Al-Bhed kidnappers, and everyone including Lulu going hardcore on those beams going down to the wedding reception from the airship. The Dream Zanarkand and Dream of the Fayth thing has always bugged me though. And honestly, did it not cross anyone's mind that they ought to have sent Seymour as soon as possible, and not you know, four encounters later? He stopped being an intimidating, or cool villain the moment I realised he was a one-man Team Rocket with annoying boss fights, but is beaten every time.

FFX is an okay game. It's not quite the Second Coming of the franchise though. Nor is it the last good FF game. I remember most vividly the trials I had to go through to beat one of Seymour's forms, Yunalesca, and later Jecht. You cannot skip cutscenes. I had to endure the same nonsense for ten minutes before a battle every time I wanted to have another go at the boss. Shut up! Everyone shut the hell up and let me play! If FFX HD doesn't let you skip cutscenes, to hell with it.

+ Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Linear as hell, combat was at least action-based, but it still got dull after a plethora of fights when you don't even need to put much thought into your moves anymore. I didn't like the DMW thing, even though I only found out recently that your level-ups aren't exactly down to luck. Missions pretty all the same, uninspired stuff with the same maps, but using different sections of them. It's short and I didn't feel it was worth the money I spent on it. The story is just uhh, why? You've made Cloud a miserable git again, making Zack the refreshing contrast to him, and you've retconned pretty much everything that will happen next because Genesis spilled the beans.

And for fuck's sake. The Goddess never bothered to give Aerith another chance at life, but gave Gackt-Genesis one. What in the fuck has Genesis done to deserve another chance at life? If I could stand a chance, and bother getting there, I would unlock the mission to beat up the Goddess.

I agree withamostly ff12 and ff10. But CC still has a place in my heart as a ff7 spin off. But still, I think we'll be seeing some ff5 and ff11 soon enough.

Most Underrated:

Final Fantasy IX

It is one of my favorites and one of the best Final fantasies out there, the whole thing and everything about it just fits, Epic game, All Characters Rocked, Beatrix may be the greatest Non-Party/Temporary Character of all time!, but all the party members were epic!

Most Overrated:

Final Fantasy XII

This is not even close, it was good, not Great, i liked it but I did not love it like the others, Vaan was the only good male character, the other 2 male party members are perhaps the worst characters ever, especially Balthier, it was the first one in which you could not change at least the main character's name, Vayne was the worst/most bland/weakest/easiest villain ever, Vaan was the weakest FF Main Character, Most of the so called Bosses and Superbosses were too easy, 6/10, it has by far the most flaws on the whole, that and you could not Dual Wield, also Ultima (the strongest spell) is far weaker than in other FF Games!, Fran is the first black FF Female in history which is an upside, but that was outweighed by the Flaws of this game, This Definitly Ranks Last on my list!

Underrated: FF VIII
I see alot of people hating this game, you either hate it or you love it. I happen to love it since it was the first real FF I ever played (my first games were Dissidia and FF XII Revenant Wings) and this made me fall in love with the series. I loved the system and most of all the story and the characters. Squall is my favorite male character ever, he's so awkward and I love it. I downloaded the game onto my PSP so I can always take it with me wherever I go.

Overrated: FF XIII
The English language does not have enough words to describe how much I hate this game. I tried it a few times, gave it alot of time to grow on me, asked people what they loved about it etc. I really really reaaaally tried to like it. I gave it my all! But I just can't get over the fact how much this game annoys me. I like alot of freedom in games and let's face it: you don't get it in FF XIII. And even though I would ever happen to love this game, I will always hate Lightning and since she plays such a big role in this game... Great graphics though!

Underrated : Final Fantasy VIII

Overrated : Final Fantasy XII

Isn't this basically a " Beetches and hoes stop hatin' what I love thread and like what I like, I'll smack ya bitches up wit' my pimp stick thread" ? Meh, anyways. -__-

Like FF VIII

Overrated: Final Fantasy Xiii - You all know why. The fact that there is still a fanbase shocks me to this day. I believe any form of fanbase of this game of the ff-oriented is what j consider overrated.

ok, your turn.

LOL!!!! OMG, that made me burst out laughing...it's true, though, sorry to say. I can't believe it myself. 0_o I wouldn't say that FF13 is overrated, but Square Enix just overrated it themselves to make it seem like people/fans of FF hold it in high regard when really...we don't. 0_o

Overrated: Final Fantasy VII [the spin-offs]

My favorite FF and I am not bashing the original, but I am bashing how loved this game is because it's because of that that SE thought it was okay to expand its story and characters into so many [TERRIBLE] spin-offs that it just makes me irk at FFVII sometimes when I think about it. But I just block out the fact that it has a line of spin-offs to see how great the one and only original FFVII is. The game itself is not overrated - it is perfectly loved because it deserves it on its own.

Underrated: Final Fantasy IX

I don't even know what I'm talking about because I didn't even finish it, but I played A LOT of it past the first or even second disk...it was o-kay, which I think is why not a lot of people talk about it, but I do wish that they did. I mean, I've seen its name tossed here and there, but there was never really much said about it to make me go, "Oh, wow! I wanna play this game!" I just decided that on my own. I heard the game came out at a bad time when people were moving away from the PS1, but I still think it deserves to be looked at. It was kinda boring, though, now that I think of it and it had a lot of annoying parts.

As for FFVIII, sorry but I can see why it's underrated. It had potential, but failed to use it in the final product. And FFXII, using a world from an FF spin-off, shouldn't have even been an FF. Too much battling, not enough story and characters.

Underrated - FF IX

Just judging from personal experience/conversations I've had. This game barely gets mentioned and when it does it's with a kind of disdainful, indifference. The poor game deserves more in my opinion. Very charming and quaint title with lots of soul.

Overrated - FF XIII

I was going to say VII, but come on; it deserves its praise. XIII however is horrific. It blows my mind how anyone can enjoy it (this coming from some one who beat it just for the sake of saying I played right through and then hating themselves afterwards). There are not enough words in the English language to express my loathing of XIII. Before it was ever released I was excited/intrigued by it and that battle theme was oh so musical. Having now played the game all the way through I can safely say there is probably a distinct circle of hell in which the punishment is to listen to the XIII battle track on repeat.

 I am reading all these and people are just putting the game they hate as the "over-rated" one. I wasn't going to respond to this, but after reading everyone saying the game they hate is overrated, makes me kinda laugh. Just because you hate the game, shouldn't make it "overrated."

But here I go

Underrated - Final Fantasy V

It isn't that this game has haters or anything, just few people that love the Final Fantasy series I feel haven't played it, or when they finally did play it, it was so many years after the release that people automatically turned it away for one reason or another.
Personally, I think that the story and characters were memorable and some of the better characters Square Soft Created back in the "Classical Era" (before VII.) It probably had one of the best villains in a Final Fantasy game, and I just feel like people don't give it a fair chance for how old it is...

Overrated - Final Fantasy IV

One of my favorite FF games of all time (in the top 3 of my FF list.) Why is this game overrated? Not only is it because that it gets remade on every system. It was very easy to beat with almost no challenge, even the side quest and the "hard mode" as it became to be known were very easy. Almost everyone but one person that we thought was "dead" suddenly just comes back all fine and happy... except one... and Kain keep getting controlled was very annoying, sure once is fine, but the second time and I think it happened a third time, should of just stayed an enemy for a deeper plot. Then the very end with Zemus was probably one of the worst throw in final bosses in any Final Fantasy, except for maybe FFIX with Necron.
Also they need to leave this game a treasure and stop reporting/remaking it on every system known to man, wouldn't be shocked if it goes on Vita, PS4, finds its way on XboxOne and Wii-U, along with Final Fantasy I and II...

Good points Bugs. But when you dislike a game so much and some fans just rant about how good it is and how wonderful it is, it does make you question " Why " ? Like Halo I cannot fathom why so many jizz over that game like it rose from the heavens. ( no offence to any Halo fans out there ):hmmm:

Kinda, I mean I never liked the Elder Scrolls series, or most of the Zelda games, but I am not going say they are "overrated", just not for me. I feel like some of the games I really like are overrated actually, just because they are held up so high that people feel like they define a whole series or genre of gaming or something.

I feel like the Final Fantasy series overall could be stated as "overrated" just because when fans love it, they really love it. Every game in the series has its fans that go way over just liking the game. They will state how it is the best game ever made, that it deserves sequels and remakes and Square should just make everything exactly like that one Final Fantasy.

This thread as far as the "overrated" part goes, is just basically an attack on what games people hate (granted I did read a few that didn't do that.) I am just saying that not liking a game should automatically make it "overrated" You have to think about the games you like also and figure if those games are not the "overrated" ones...

Underrated: I have to say Final Fantasy VIII
It's a game that a lot of people don't like, or don't talk about. I think being the game directly after VII, people had high expectations for it, and being so different to what came before it, lots of people hated it on principle that it wasn't another FFVII. I think the junction system is really well thought out and why so many people hate it just boggles my mind. Sure, it's different and a little strange compared to other levelling systems, but I'd rather have something different and original and interesting than something bland that I can't adapt to my playing style. The story is so immersive, the cast is diverse. There's so much sidequests, and sidestories that you can totally miss. Every time I replay this game, I find something new, no matter how many times I play it. I think it's a real shame so many people hate it or just forget about it in amongst VII, IX and X.

Overrated: Final Fantasy VII
There was really only one game I could put for this. It's not that I hate this game, or even dislike it really. I just feel very unenthusiastic about it. The story doesn't capture my attention, I don't think many of the characters are well done. I think Aerith is overrated all on her own, she's nothing but a mary sue but she's pretty much hailed as one of the best characters ever. Honestly, I struggled to even complete it and only managed on my third try. The gameplay is okay, but I don't think it's that imaginative or great, and I dislike the way materia works. So although I do like this game, I don't think it's anywhere near as good as it's hailed as.

Second nominees (just because I think these deserve a mention too) ~

Underrated #2: Final Fantasy XII
I think this game suffered for a lot of the same reasons VIII did. It came after FFX which was highly loved, and the whole game had a very different style. The gameplay, the storyline, everything was very open and free and compared to the more linear style of other Final Fantasies I think people forgot the story in amongst all the other sidequests and travel. I did too, I'll be honest, I don't think this game is amazing, but I think what it lacks in an amazing story it makes up for in it's gameplay. I don't think it's fair that this game is so often cast aside as people say there hasn't been a good FF game since X.

Overrated #2: Final Fantasy XIII
This didn't get the first nomination because it really isn't rated well. However, it's rated extremely highly by Square Enix themselves, it's been granted two sequels for goodness sakes. So regardless of how many people do acknowledge that this is a terrible game, it's still rated far too highly. It's an absolutely terrible game imo. It has nothing going for it, the characters are boring and have no development, the story makes no sense and is convoluted rubbish, the gameplay consists of mashing X and letting the game play itself, sidquests, weapons, levelling system, none of them give you any freedom or choice. It's not a game, it's a movie where you have to press forward and x to continue, and with a bad story at that.
And as for Lightning, I'm not going to say she's a bad character, because after playing XIII-2 I do think she's okay, but she's so overrated by Square that it's unreal. Seriously.

Most Overrated- FFXIII. No...just...no....

Most Underrated- FFVIII. I heard some people saying it was to lovey dovey back in the day. I actually liked the love story in this game.

You would be saying if you were a zekda fan and a elders scroll fan.
I mean who else but a fan of tge series xan say which game is overrated in that series?

True, but if I was a fan of those series, I would probably pick one of the most popular ones as the overrated one... not the probably most hated one around here... which is what everyone seems to be doing... Hating a game and a game that is "over-rated" should be two different things.

That would be true if every1 hated it . But 13 in this case is seen in such high regard in reviews and game sites (rarely making mention of the faults). Even rare ff fans defend it based on "every ff is different".

In my eyes for such a horrible game, this should have a tiny microscopic cult of fans that you cant even pinpoint. But we see a significantly bigger fanbase. So yes...over-rated in my book.

Overrated - FFVII. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game and it was significant in that it changed the whole RPG genre when it came out but it has aged very poorly and is one of the worst looking games in the franchise as far as I'm concerned. The story is good, the characters are great, the gameplay was fun, but in my mind it is not a masterpiece. It's simply just a fun game and a solid entry in the FF franchise.

Underrated - FFXII. I understand that the game is polarizing and does not seem like a FF game but give it a chance and you'll see the game is very fun and has a lot of heart. The characters could use more development but ultimately it's about the world, not the characters. The soundtrack is phenomenal as far as I'm concerned. Yes I miss Uematsu but the FF soundtrack greatness will live on. The first time I played this game I hated it but I went back a few years later and loved it. The difference was my mindset. I was expecting another FFX in terms of characters, story, and world but FFXII is a very different game and a very good one at that. If you didn't like it the first time, replay it. Go in with an open mind. You might be surprised at how much fun it is.
