Who is there that you truly believe deserves to go down in history for what they've contributed to the industry? Be they past or present, living or dead.

I've got a few on my list:
Bob Dylan - The man is a genius. There's very few people who can write music that's as influential and respected 40 years later as the day it was released.
The Beatles - Pretty much the same goes. They've written some legendary songs that will never go out of date.
Elvis Presley - You don't get called The King of Rock 'n' Roll for nothing. Again, he's written some top-class stuff.
Johnny Cash - For very much the same reasons as above. Despite the fact that he's passed on, he's still referred to and compared to now.
Jimi Hendrix - Show me another man who can play a guitar with his teeth, and I'll add them to the list. Amazing talent.
And now a little more recent:
Liam & Noel Gallagher - Oasis are seen as a band that shaped the way music currently is, and are one if (if not the) biggest bands of the 90s. Their stuff will very probably be just as popular in another 20 years.
Alex Turner - Yes, he's new to the scene, but he's written (in my opinion) two outstanding albums that have won several awards. Since Arctic Monkeys came onto the scene, they've had countless nominations for awards every year.
Matt Bellamy - Much like Turner, he's won several awards for his writings and performances through the years. He's been asked to write songs for Hollywood films also, so he's getting a huge reputation globally.

Note: I intentionally left Kurt Cobain out, because I never really saw him as legendary. Just someone who was pretty good with a guitar.

There's probably more that I'll add later on as and when I think of them.

Just to be clear.... Do entire bands count? other than the Beatles, that is? Like... Ac Dc or Guns n' Roses?

You forgot U2. Genius. Nuff said

REM have some of the best songs (and crazy lyrics) out there

James are a top class group and should be loved by all although very underrated , Tim Booth is a legend,

*eats server and shits it out*

I think Bono, Edge, Larry Mullen & Adam Clayton are ALL legends
Although Bono by himself is juset exceptional anyway.

Tim Booth from James, he has the best crazy dancing ever & some of my most favourite songs are sang by him ;_;

Michael Stipe is quality

Herman Li from Dragonforce! - Pure guitar shredage! He also has amazing hair.

Herman Li is awesome live for 10 minutes and then sucks after that. Live, I meant. Meh, there are better guitarist than Herman Li such as Hendrix, Slash, and Michael Angelo Batio.

As for Music Legends.... I believe Madonna and Michael Jackson should be part of that list.

Madonna is the Queen of Pop, she's won a lot of award, top earning female singer in the world, and overall one of the most successful female singers.

Michael Jackson has some great, memorable songs such as Thriller, Black or White, Billie Jean, and Beat it. Won 13 Grammy awards and he's one of the best selling artist. We can't forget his Moonwalk. =P

Brian May - Queen. Excellent guitarist Bohemion Rhapsody is a classic

Ooh which moves me on to Freddie Mercury - his songs will be around forever.

Alex Turner - Yes, he's new to the scene, but he's written (in my opinion) two outstanding albums that have won several awards. Since Arctic Monkeys came onto the scene, they've had countless nominations for awards every year.

There's probably more that I'll add later on as and when I think of them.

didnt you have a tiny go at me for going to an arctic monkeys gig in another thread?

i think serj tankian should go in because of allround awesomness

i seriously think there should be an opposite thread to this just because Bono, oasis, michael jackson, madonna and other people that have been nominated are tools.

especially bono.

ps no offence to the person with the name bono

No, I was jealous because you got to go to it. =[
Oasis are widely seen as the iconic band of the 90s though, and U2 have been going strong ever since the 70s, so I think it's fair to say that they are legendary. And Michael Jackson, while a paedophile, is the best selling artist of all time. Has to count for something, no?

Kurt Cobain was great and is a true legend, its the hype isn't all that. Dig around Nirvana's back catalog past all the 'Teens Spirits' and whatnot and you have some fucking good and meaningful songs.

Tony Iommi - The master of the riff. This guy, along with the other three original Sabbs, MADE doom and gloom rock music....whilst having a few fingers missing.

David Gilmore - Pink Floyd would never have gotten far without this guy. His guitar work is moving simply drool worthy.

Cozy Powell - Immense and highly influential drummer who has made his mark on a shit load of albums with a shit load of people. RIP.

Ian Gillan - Has a voice, a very big voice, a fucking HUGE voice, even now. One of the greatest singers of all time.

Freddy Mercury - Awesome voice, great showmanship, we need more frontmen like him these days. RIP.

Dave Grohl - Good guitarist, excellent drummer, great songwriter....but I think its his attitude that makes him truly great.

Steve Harris - One of the greatest bass players in the world and formed Iron Maiden, nuff said really.

Theres loads but my brain hurts.

I dont know, Ive seen Dragonforce live twice now and he was pretty good throughout.
I agree hes not as good as Hendrix or Slash, but youve gotta admire a guy who can play at that speed for that long.

Really? o_O I was told not to go to their concerts. From what I've heard that they're great for the first 30 minutes of the concert, then the band starts getting tired. Towards the end they're terrible from what I heard.

but thats his fault for not wearing a seat belt, but a legend none the less.

U2 have been going strong ever since the 70s
ima have to disagree with you, U2 have been dire since the late 80s

David Gilmore - Pink Floyd would never have gotten far without this guy. His guitar work is moving simply drool worthy.
his guitar playing is great but its actually roger waters who wrote all the PF songs, and his bass caries most of them, like shine on you crazy diamond.

Cobain is great, and for that matter so is Jim Morrison, his stuff is amazing, both definetly legends

Led Zeppelin > Sabbath
Robert Plant was the first singer to sing with a high voice, and has influenced many other singers bon scott and axl rose for exapmle

Jimmy Page is the greatest guitarest ever, he could even play with a violin bow.

Alice Cooper for creating rock theatre

Motley Crue, no one else could get away with playing in six inch stilletos

and finally, the stones, just for being around so long

ok thsi is wher i shine:

lets start

getty lee (rush): without a doubt one of teh best bass players i have ever hear. he can multi task teh keyboard and bass with vocals.. damn!! the band rush. in my opinion ins the greatest power trio ever!

zakk wylde: mad can this guy scream that guitar. ozzy found a great one to follow in randy rhoes footsetps when he hire dhim.

randy rhodes: probably teh fastest guitar player evere. he could trill and sling solos with the best of them

those are a few of my hero's well all i can think of now.. just got in form work... and my head is every where right now.

ima have to disagree with you, U2 have been dire since the late 80s

They may not have had a record deal but I think you will find that they have been together since the mid 70's. They got big in the 80's and imo, they are still great, if they werent they then they quite simply would have dissappeared. Sure they had a rock patch in the 90's but who doesn't :monster:

Gene Hoglan - For a big fat guy, he is the fastest drummer I have ever heard. He has played along side with some of the best metal bands like Dethklok(fictional band, but amazing, none the less :P), Slayer, Opeth, etc. He holds some of the longest, fastest, and deepest tribal rhythms ever! Amazing, simply amazing.

Trent Reznor - Not the world's greatest vocalist, but I gotta say the guy just knows how to sing without sounding great. I really don't know what it is about the guy, but he is one of my favorite vocalists next to Dave Grohl. Not many can pull it off singing as well as he can, makes him a legend in my opinion. He's just different, in a good way lol.

Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo & Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk) - I have never heard more unique techno than what these two produce. Not only that but they put on the most amazing concerts you will ever know. They have really risen the bar, with not only ground shaking beats, but the most amazing light shows ever. They're extremely creative, and they do a lot with their songs. I had the personal pleasure of seeing them live last year at Vegoose, in Las Vegas, and it was just crazy. They really have evolved a lot farther than most techno that is out right now.

Brendon Small - My favorite guitarist, does some of the best metal I've ever heard, along side his amazing vocals. He's a one man, metal band. Nuff said!

He means they haven't been good since the late 80s. Which is obvious bullshit when you look at Beautiful Day and the like.

Oh lol i really need to learn how to read >_< , but yeah, thats when I first got into them. I heard Beautiful Day & I was like ooooooh. All that you can't Leave behind is one of my favourite albums.

a beautiful day is okay, perhaps good, but great, no.

but another music legend is Tom Robinson, did lots of great protest songs and just some other great songs ie war baby, which is brilliant.

Liberace, elton john would nto have had the success that he had with him, he also lead the way for musicians to be openly gay and flamboyant
