We all know music can make us feel nostalgic. It can take us back in time, generate the memory of a past event, a place or perhaps an entire year.
I would like to focus specifically on childhood. A majority of the music I loved as a kid was pretty terrible, but there are certain tracks I still love. They make me feel happy. They take me back to some of the best days in my life, and help me remember some of the people who were there.
What were your favourite pieces of music as a kid?
Why?
Why do you still love them?
Do they remind you anything?
The first piece I am going to have to name here is Reach by S Club 7. S Club were the only pop band I followed properly before the age of about 11. This song specifically is one that's been played at several parties and I am pretty sure my class learnt to dance to it with my favourite teacher in the world! The song therefore reminds me of her too and of everything she did for me. She was my Brownie leader and had very motherly qualities, so I support I link certain characteristics in myself to her.
Second, Never Had a Dream Come True by S Club 7. This piece is so sad. I can't remember the first time I heard it, but I do remember playing it on the HiFi at Christmas (the same year my grandparents bought me a magic tricks set!) and singing (reluctantly) in front of my parents. The piece also reminds me of Titanic. The two fit together so well! The song reminds me Jack's dedication in the Titanic, the happiness he gave Rose and what happened at at the end. The song therefore reminds me of Leonardo DiCaprio, my first major crush.
A third would HAVE to be the Pokemon theme... which is of course linked to the show, the cards, the games, all of which felt very important in my childhood!
Then we come to Mr. Mistofilees, from Cats the musical! I like this piece for a layer of reasons... First of all, it's linked to Music Makers, a workshop which took place at my school during one week of the summer holidays. Basically, we spent a week playing and makign music, and one year, I'm pretty sure Cats was used! Secondly, I was going to call my cat Theo Mistofilees at one time... Theo was one of the best friends I've ever had. It sounds strange I know, but this cat was such a clown and so intelligent and responsive! He'd come when called (most cats are fickle in doing this), would sit quietly by our side from the very first week we got him, and loved climbing trees, hanging off the branches and twisting around them to play with his tail! I was heartbroken when he was run over.
Then there's The Angel's Carol, a piece I have sung several times. I assocaite it with my primary school's celebration of the nativity, which always felt special. It was a time in the year when we all came together. The entire experience was incredibly warm, friendly and full of meaning. For that reason I will always respect religion and what it can offer to people.
Edit: Oh how could I not add this!
It's so powerful! My mum used to play it all the time and it was often on in a local shop called Body and Soul, which sadly closed years ago. It was one of those lovely smelling shops with mist, gentle lighting, crystals and lots of models, and books about personal wellbeing (probably). Furthermore, it's on the same CD as Tintinabulum, which I used to sing with my choir. I was the only person who would bellow out as loudly as we were meant to. All the kids would look at me and Mr Andrews just told them that they shouldn't 'cause I was the only one doing it right.
