Nintendo will be launching a new portable gaming system in October. It's called the Nintendo 2DS. It's a 3DS without the 3D, and it's shaped like a thin piece of cake.
"This is an entry-level handheld gaming system," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told Kotaku earlier this week when we got our hands on the unusual device.

The system is compatible with all 3DS and DS games. Its two screens are the same size as those of the original 3DS, smaller than those on the Nintendo 3DS XL. The 2DS' upper screen will not render graphics in 3D, though the system's two outward-facing cameras will still take photos and video in 3D, saving those files on a memory card so that they can be transferred to hardware that does display stereoscopic 3D imagery.1
The system launches on October 12 in North America, the same day as the release of the first major next-gen handheld Pokemon games, Pokemon X and Y. Those games will only work on post-DS systems, a line that now includes 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS.

The 2DS will sell for $129.99 and will be available in red or blue. That price makes it $40 cheaper than the Nintendo 3DS and $70 cheaper than the Nintendo 3DS XL (and recently price-dropped PlayStation Vita).
"We expect consumers to use it just the way they use a current 3DS," Fils-Aime said. "And, really, from a target standpoint, this is designed for that entry-level gamer. For a family of four with two kids, when you're looking at spending either $169.99 or $199.99 for two this holiday, now you've got a more affordable choice with Nintendo 2DS."
The system will also launch in Europe but is not announced for release in Japan.

Not sure how I feel about this, personally. Normally oddball redesigns cutting unnecessary features for the sake of hitting a lower price point come towards the end of a console's life cycle, not right when it's finally picking up steam. Be it targeted at kids or not, this seems like the admission to end all admissions that 3D has failed this generation. I mean, really, 2D as a selling point? Who woulda thunk.

The introductory video is pretty cringeworthy, too:

I actually don't own a 3DS yet, but I intend to get one sometime next month. When I do, I'll definitely be going for the 3DS XL and not looking back.

That video... was just bad.... just bad...

"A handheld system you never have seen before"... lies...

But anyways... I guess it is nice for the "cheaper non 3D" version the 3DS as I heard it called. For $120 I think I would get it, since I don't really care about "3D" games/movies...anything for that matter.

Nintendo: "okay, yes. 3D is just a gimmick and not the breathtaking experience we had in mind when we were building our first 3DS machines. Here, have a rump version of our handheld that is perfect for people who think clamshell designs are too much work to open/close, and turning the 3D switch off requires too much cognitive brainpower."

I don't fully get why it's a slabby door wedge shape now (is it more durable than the folding ones?). How cost effective is this redesign and getting rid of the clamshell design with the hinge? And how much has the battery been cut down by?

What they've done in order for fingers to ergonomically be able to reach the shoulder buttons, is push the analogue stick and face buttons up near the top screen, so you're going to have to awkwardly glance down constantly to see the bottom screen.

Plus it's ugly, but it's not the worst thing I've seen by a long shot. It's cheaper, looks designed to be more durable as a slate, lacks a 3D function that under 7s shouldn't use, and coincides with Pokémon. The target demographic is clearly identified. The problem will now be how confused some consumers will be at the name.

prrobably designed for people who dont like nintendo be more open to it. its cheaper, great. im also thinking parents who worry about their kids eyesight as that commercial was way too informercial for standard gamers.

It is a meh overall. I already have a 3DS and you had better believe I would be sticking with it for the next few years. I just do not like the design of the 2DS very much. It looks very awkward when compared to all of the other Nintendo ds systems. I guess it is cool for some people who cannot afford a 3ds, since it will be launching on the day pokemon x and y come out.

I am not sure if there was any point to this.....

If you want to play without 3D on just turn the 3D feature off. Was that so hard, guys?

I think it is more the fact that it is a good $60- $80 cheaper at least that is the big deal with this... I mean really, if it is for kids, who is going buy it... the parents...

So if you say a 2DS for $120 or a 3DS for $200 which one would you get?

Unpopular opinion time !

I actually don't mind this as they are clearly aiming for the younger generation children aged between 5-12 as the 3D can be painful for young children's eyes and can give them some serious headaches. It's clearly aimed for the kiddies as they can't handle 3D like we can.

It doesn't bend but again kiddies don't play for long hours like we do, maybe a couple of Mario Kart tracks for a hour or two ( if lucky when I was little a friend of mine could only have 1 hour of PlayStation 2 a day poor soul )and that's it, plus the bag for school lunch times and car trips. It doesn't interest you because you're not 9 years old.

So no I don't hate it and think that it's cool that Nintendo has the younger gamers in mind so they can grow up to be badass teen & adult players like us. Thankyou and good day.

It's not about simply switching off the 3D button and calling it a day. A lot of the people I know can't afford to buy a 3DS because it costs a lot. People have other things to worry about like food for their families. So yeah, I really like this. A cheaper version of the 3DS without the 3D (which I never really cared about), that still plays 3DS games.

It sounds like a win for everybody here. Kids can get their brand new console, and parents won't have to spend as much. Not everybody can afford to buy the latest console or game. It's not as simple as going to a store and picking it up. There are other things people have to factor in. Sometimes kids will have to wait a while for the new console, but that's just the way things are. Not everything is happy flowers where you can get a game without thinking to yourself, "damn, that could have went towards some bills."

*rant over*

I really do like this console idea. Great move, Nintendo.

I saw the promotional video for this on youtube and thought it was a pisstake :lew: I thought theres no way Nintendo would release that. Essentially just open your 3DS all the way, turn the 3d slider off and you have a 2ds

And with that said just look at how fucking ugly that thing is. Its repulsive. With that shape it has though i guess it could double as a door wedge. Probably all its good for. If the 3ds is a glamorous lady then the 2ds is a back alley night walker with kebab on her face.

And to address the whole price thing. If money is that much of a problem i doubt you could afford to get either because its worth your time saving the extra pennies for a 3DS which is far superiour obviously and its not like the difference is that big. You can also get 3DS' real cheap 2nd hand.

I reckon the 2ds is another virtual boy.

Despite the logical name, it's still a potentially awful name given the product line they have.

Unless Nintendo clearly clarifies it (and they don't have a good record of clarifying or naming their products. The Wii U alone and the confusion that generated, and how poorly Nintendo have handled it, is a testament of that), your average uninformed, and/or plain stupid consumer is going to look at the 2DS, then look at the shelves filled with 3DS games, scratch their heads and walk off.

Uninformed consumer: "3DS games? No, I have a 2DS though...what am I supposed to buy for this?"

And apparently it's going to go for £110 over here, when you can get a 3DS from £140. I know a thirty quid difference is still significant, but overall the 2DS is just acting as the solution to a problem that no one seemed to be having. If the price was £80-90 then yeah, good move, but at £110, it's going to be a very limited success. Unless Nintendo is that dead set on increasing their profit margins in any way possible, even if miniscule, as the Wii U is tanking.

I was discussing with a friend of mine a month back that Nintendo will start it's downfall in a couple of years and this merely starts it. We have had a poor WiiU launch, over priced system and only just got an upcoming price drop. The 3DS is selling well but needs a price drop and the 2DS is just signs of desperation from Nintendo. All they needed to do is drop the 3DS down to a more suitable price and bam no need for a whole new handheld which your 3DS can do like others have stated turn the slider down.

On top of that reggie recently said the upcoming next gen launch line up for Xbox One and PS4 was meh and he followed it up with 'We have Zelda, Mario and Donkey Kong' These are franchises you have been having all the time milked for 20+ years..god come on Nintendo.

theres also the issue of people thinking 3d is over the top and niche. similar to how people had the option to use the gambit system in ff12 but hated it any ways to have such an option. so their putting a "basics" only.

i don't see this as attracting kids, i see this as attracting parents for kids. it has already been reported that many players get side affects after playing it in 3d. turn it off? why would you want that? would you stop eating pizza if you know its bad for you?

I would not say the 2DS is going to bomb. I think it will do extremely well with pokemon on the side. Wii U has had a bad start, but that does not mean it can redeem itself with more exclusives/sequels.

The 2DS in general is not going to be an image of deception, because I am sure people will know by the trailer/info that it is just a variant of the 3DS. In my honest opinion, I think the 2DS will do well.

I will say that I agree with the above. 3DS could have just got a price drop. Another handheld variant is stupid, imo

I still stand by my words. If 3D is hurting the eyes of children, why not just put it down to 2D. It is weird to call this one a 2DS, when the 3DS is not entirely all 3D.

What the crap is this? No clamshell? Cake slice shape? No 3D? Wasn't that your whole gimmick? If they price dropped the 3DS, even a little, I'm sure they would make the same sales as they would off of this. This is just going to turn out to be another Gameboy Micro. (Oh what's that, you can't remember what the Micro was like? Exactly.)

As crap as it looks, this is quite a clever move for Nintendo. They've been sued - successfully - regarding their 3D technology, and whilst there is no proof that 3D fucks up your eyes in any lasting way, a lot of people think it does and a fair number (myself included) get murderous headaches if they play in 3D for too long. Distancing what will be their leading handheld for years to come from that, even if it's only one version of it, AND making it cheaper to boot, is an excellent way to draw in those parents who fall back on the "it's too expensive" or "you'll hurt your eyes" excuses, and there are plenty of them. I know it's the 3DS' main gimmick, and that you can just opt out of it, and you can pick up a 3DS second hand for less than what they're selling it for, but...eh. Consumer's minds work in strange ways.

That, plus they're releasing these consoles right as the next Pokemon games come out. Pokemon might not be the only reason the DS sold a fuckton, but it's definitely one of the major contributing factors. X and Y would sell a lot without these, but they can't hurt their chances. It's a obvious sales ploy, and whilst the design is ridiculous, clunky-looking and highly impractical - after all, two screens means twice the chances of scratching in the palms of little brats; being able to close the screens gives them so measure of protection, especially if you're carrying it around - it's a good move.

I wouldn't ever consider one, though. Piece of shit. xD

It makes alot of sense. For those who want to play the 3DS titles but don't care enough about the 3d or can't afford it this is a great, cheap alternative which can play the same titles. I'd say the only other drawback is that you can't fold it, but this is probably done to keep the price low. One unit is cheaper to construct than two seperate units.

What's the meaning of this new console?
If Nintendo 2D is born to be an alternative to Nintendo 3DS the idea is very bad. Anyone would prefer to buy a Nintendo 3DS..the difference of price is only 40€ and often we can find N3D at less than 170 €..today it's worth 150€ or less.
Also an uninformed parent would buy a 3DS instead: it costs more but it has an extra option (the possibility to choose the 3D effects).

The only positive aspect is the shape of this new console: it's more pratical for a 7 year old child who won't destroy it in a short time since he doesn't need to close and open the console over and over again.

...I think people are making too big of deal out of this...

I just think of this as another version of the 3DS.

I mean how many versions of the GB were there... the GBC? The GBA? The DS? and the 3DS now?

Me personally I would like a 3DS without the "3D" part of it... 3D makes my head dizzy and I never liked it... not in movies... or anything like that.

Me personally, I hope this "3D" fad dies, because I know lots of people that can't watch 3D without getting sick, yet every movie feels like they should show off 3D, heck they even have 3D tv's.

So, in a way if I were to get a 3DS I think I would get a 2DS (or which I think they might do, make a... "gamer" version of the 2DS that looks more like a 3DS eventually)

How did I miss this thread.

Firstly, it a doorstop, no dinning it nintendo, it a doorstop with 2 screens. 2, it a ugly fuck, you won't see me near that if my life depended on it. 3 I read the battery life on this fat thing is worse that the 3DS XL..... WHAT, how can that be :ffs:. And finally 4, the name, this is soooo not going to confuse people:

"It a 2DS, but wait, it can play 3DS games, but this model is lower than the 3DS because 3 comes after 2."

Yeah, Nintendo are going downhill quicker than a fat pig chasing after food, with this, the Wii U failing and Nintendo always rehashing franchises rather than making new games.

To be completely fair, Gameboy, gameboy color, and gameboy advance were all 3 separate handheld generations. But they were made so close together that they were backwards compatible.

But that's not the case here...DS has a lot of alternate versions. The only problem I have with it is the naming. If they announced this earlier, more people can get used to the idea.
