I was searching around google to see which system were currently during well in sales and stumbled across this: http://www.vgchartz.com/home.php according to that the system selling the most worldwide is the Nintendo DS with the 360 coming in second, PS3 coming in third, Nintendo Wii coming in fourth and finally with the PSP coming in last. Your thoughts? I'm not surprised to see any of Nintendo systems being ranked number one because last time I checked the Wii was coming up to number one beating the 360 some time last year.

Indeed. The only reason Wii sales are falling behind is because everyone already has one lol.
I already knew PSP was in last place... which saddens me. It has potential... but no-one gives it any love.

I guess the DS is just all-around better to develop hand-held games than the PSP. Most games for the PSP would be great on the PS3 instead.

I'm happy for you, DS and I'm going to let you finish but the XBOX360 is the best video game console of all time!

jk, jk, not trying to start a debate. I just couldn't resist making that overused Internet meme.

Now that I'm done with that, I am a little surprised that a hand held console is doing the best in sales. I would have thought the 360 would still be in the lead, oh well. Nintendo does have the most experience with hand held consoles so it's no surprised that they would do better than the PSP at least.

Edit: Thinking about it more I think a lot of its current success might be due to the price. I only paid $129.00 (If my memory serves me correctly) for my DS and that's cheaper than the other consoles right now isn't it?

I can't say I'm surprised.

The DS's closest competitor, the PSP has reached a point of stagnation quite a while ago with waning popularity (outside of Japan of course) and a rather lacklustre lineup of game releases lately and on the horizon compared to the other formats. The DS is significantly cheap compared to its rivals and it comes with quite a vast library of games that appeal to a wide range of gamers. Developers tend to find the DS as being the easiest format to make games for (and it's quicker and cheaper, as opposed to the millions you're blowing on a large scale HD PS3 game for example) and with a large format base, they can't go wrong with developing for the DS...even if a majority of its games are just churned-out rubbish. :wacky:

It doesn't surprise me considering that the DS has games for any age group and just about everyone already has a Wii. Most of my nieces and nephews have asked for a DS recently and they have gotten one.

This isn't a surprise, the DS is still selling like Avatar's first week tickets. Still, I really wish the PSP got more love, it really does have potential. The PS3's been catching up a lot lately, which is good - allows more developers to get into the console and bring some more niche games to the market.

it was a price battle and the cheaper consoles won. customers can downplay performance specs, they cannot downplay price tags. the savvy shopper will of course go for the console that costs half as much as its competitor, unless the more expensive one has super amazing features that the cheapie doesn't have, which wasn't the case.

Although the ps3 and the psp are amazing in what they can do, all the extra features resulted in a huge price tag that no one wanted to pay because they could get the less-featured but much cheaper DS/Wii/360. In the 360's case it became a slug-fest in both performance AND pricing. Years later, this record has manifested in the DS's huge popularity, so huge that the newest iterations cost quite a bundle and yet still sell because of word-of-mouth and the 'everybody has one' social atmosphere of gaming communities (example: groups of school kids who game, etc).

The Wii seems to be saturated so its sales are waning, but the rest of the scores seem on the mark.

I think the PSP probably suffers a bit sales-wise because it isn't a terribly unique product compared to the Nintendo DS. While the DS has its own unique interface and gameplay, the PSP is more or less just a handheld version of Sony's home consoles and I think that's a much harder sell.

It's funny though. I remember when Nintendo first revealed the DS they almost got laughed out of the market and everyone was expecting the PSP to dominate it thoroughly. All it took to turn the tables was to release a sexier model (the DS Lite) and ever since then it's been Nintendo doing the dominating :P
