Has anyone else seen these? Basically they are public pianos open to anyone 24/7. They started cropping up in my city about a week ago, but apparently they are all over the world. Honestly, I think they are a great idea. They are left outside for anyone at anytime, they have covers that you can put over them if it's raining and they haven't even been vandalized.

Are they in your city, if not would you like to see them? What do you think of the idea? etc etc..

I've never even heard of them, or at least I hadn't heard of them until now. This strikes me as a plot formulated by the reigning bourgeois to slowly eke out the lower-classes by means of transmogrification, in which the piano is of course the tool performing the deed. I've encountered such plots before and am not necessarily opposed to them. I just like to assume a holier than thou air in pointing out to others that I spotted the plot before they did. Now, me, I do not need to be transformed into something spectacular to enable me to be socially interesting to the middle and upper classes. They find me delightful and charming as is - rumour has it that I shall soon be deified as a living god in their eyes, in fact.

I'd play the street drums if some dudes were on streetkeys or street guitar and needed a rhythm section.

I don't think something like that would be around long unless it was bolted to the ground in town. Hell, when I was 8 and we lived in the city, some prick stole my bike - it was really my only way of transportation to school since I'd been kicked off the school bus for getting into too many fights.

:hmph:

But yeah, I don't think something like that would last long in the city of Waynesboro.

I saw one of those on north tce the other day and some dude was playing it, pretty well as well!!
I was wondering what that was about haha, how interesting!!

I think it's an awesome idea. People can often sit in public places playing guitars and smaller instruments, but a piano isn't exactly portable, so it's not something you normally would see street performers doing. I doubt they'd ever put one up where I live though, all they ever spend money on is repaving roads that don't need it -_-

The scheme certainly has its many issues practicality-wise, but it's a very appealing idea nonetheless, though I would probably hesitate before sitting down to play on it in a very public atmosphere due to nerves. However, it would be nice supposing you're nearby on a warm and slow summer's day, sitting down and just listening to an ordinary member of the public playing the piano.

I haven't seen one pop up where I am yet, but I kind of doubt they will consider it as our council and local government wouldn't exactly want to fund for this scheme with the cuts agenda going on at the moment. Even if they agree to, you have the inevitable problem of vandals. In my town particularly, there is a noticeable presence of vandals, so leaving a public piano out there is probably not the best idea there is. I've seen graffiti being commonplace, bus stops being trashed and even recycling bins tossed over. God knows what one would do when they see a piano out there in an urban environment. Perhaps if one were to be put in a public park then the high risk of vandalism may be lower but still, our area isn't exactly the most ideal place for this sort of scheme.

I'd love to see one of these things in Owensboro,KY,it'd probably be safe from vandalism, too.I can just imagine...sitting by the Ohio River...Watching the sunset...Hearing someone play the piano...

Its kinda cool ive gotta say but youd have to have it in a very public place like where its less likely to get vandalised and it would have to be taken away at night times as its got no chance then. I spose it could work in shopping centres etc. Cool idea but you know how people are. They feel the need to destroy stuff. Cunts.

I heard someone play the FFX theme (to Zanarkand is it?) on one of them today . :monster:

While most of them are in busy areas, there are apparently a few in more quiet areas like parks and stuff, though I haven't actually those ones yet. I guess it's a good balance of sorts.

This actually reminds me of something a group of inventors did in Sweden (I think?) They set up sensors underneath the stairs in a subway and painted the stairs so that they looked like keys. :ryan:

Walking through town or a park to hear some random dude/lady playing piano pieces would be awesome. Also, do they chain the piano down? Could be "lifted".

I've never seen one of these. It does sound cool, but I know for a fact that it would get messed up out here. There are too many destructive kids and teens out here. They would tear that piano to shreds. It's unfortunate too because I really like the idea of it. I've seen with my own eyes what these kids can do. They opened up a sewer and let out a poisonous snake :jtc: Anyway.... Yeah, I dig it.

I saw one of them in London earlier this year. Sadly, they were removed from my city a while ago. :sad3:

They had one in London? :lew: Its definitely a cool idea but there just are too many dicks in the world who would destroy it.
The weirdest things we have on the street are the 4 man toilet, pissing thingies. Its just a triangular shaped thing that they put on the streets at night time. It may just be Friday and Saturday, im not sure. Basicaly you just go up to them and take a leek. Kinda hard to explain them so il post a picture up.

As you can see this guy is just delighted by them. Its kinda weird because they have them in VERY busy areas like outside clubs and bars. So your standing there doin what a man does and just over the road and right next to you are people waiting to get in a club or outside having a smoke, and theres bouncers waiting at the door. By all means they are very handy and its better than people doing it against a wall but they should put them in slightly less open areas. Seriously, right nect to a bar? Id rather go in the bar so i can wash my hands than use one of them?

Do any of you folks have these in your city?

they'd just get trashed round here, we can't have out nice without some gimp ruining it

fab idea though! :lew:
Big Casino we have them in manchester, how people can pee so publically i dont know. id just be paranoid... welll if i were a man, seeing as there are no women ones... that some one would like come and do something to me or corner me when i had my willy out D:

I think having woman ones would be a little weird kelly :wacky: there would be something pretty disturbing about seeing a bunch of woman all bunched together peeing standing up. When youv had a drink Kelly all self respect goes out the window :mokken: We both know this. The stair bannister being a prime example :mokken:
You and your escapades are a prime example too :lew:
Bambi

Ha :lew: i do believe i was a bystander to the bannister incident!!!

enclosed ones would be a good idea... thogh i supose they already have them... but you have to pay!!! women need to pee more than men as well, or at least it would appear to when you are queing to go to the bog like anywhere!

I think I saw something similar on TV but I've never seen one in person. Though, on the topic of taking a piss. I found this in Japan:

It's a video game attached to a urinal that you play by pissing. It's free to play. Basically your piss acts as a gust of wind which blows the woman's clothes away. The longer you piss, the more points you get. It made going to the toilet the most enjoyable thing ever, genius! I wish we had these in my city. :lew:

Hahah i remember hearing about these things a while back. At least sega can say they actually made something. Even if it is something that people piss all over.

In theory, it's a good idea. I'm saying 'theory' because I've had bad experiences. I fully accept that I suck at piano, but someone else may have fun and not suck, so, ultimately, I encourage the sentiment and would love to see more outdoor pianos in the near-to-far future.
