I say no. I think pop music is a pretty important genre. I do think it's overhyped and taken too seriously as something it's not, but I think it's a pretty good message.

Just lose yourself in simple-minded music. Life is too short for everything to be deep to the core. Enjoy yourself, dance, smile, don't stay focused on seriousness.

Fun.

I myself do hate a lot of computer music, and dubstep is the worst shit I've ever heard in my life, but when I do find pop songs I like, then I love them. That's why I still hold on to artists like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and even artists like Ciara.

Uh, no.

I need my songs to carry a bigger meaning than just... "forget about everything" for it to be deemed "important." When I listen to songs, I prefer to connect with the lyrics rather than just forgetting about something. Problems don't get solved if you leave them be, you gotta think over it and then fix it--and I'm glad to say the vast majority of songs that I listen to inspire that in me or at the very least soothes me in some way. However, I do like some pop music just for fun, but the pop songs that I do like for fun are either still on my playlists for nostalgia (90s pop for example) or because that specific pop song has an actual meaning to it. For example, a few of Lady Gaga's songs are fun to listen to but have a wider meaning to them than just getting lost and forgetting everything, like the subject of female power for example is one of her song's meanings.

I'm not in anyway judging people that do like it, it's just not what attracts me to music. :/ I guess if it makes people feel good that's all that really matters, now isn't it? :lew:

No, I'm the same way. I love to not only connect with the lyrics, but the music as well. The instruments, the tone the singer is using in their voice combined with the lyrics. I'm just saying, I don't think that pop music is complete and utter crap, which is what most everyone just dismisses it as.

I mean, it's crap, but that's what makes it great. But there's a line to cross. Katy Perry, Rihanna and Kesha? No fucking thank you. I won't go near that shit. There definitely is a standard, I think.

:hmmm: I don't think pop music as a whole is trash. My guilty pleasure is Robbie Williams, I could listen to his pop shite for hours at a time. But I do think as time goes on the pop music is getting worse and worse. As you listed above, I cannot stand anything by Katy Perry, Ke$ha or Rihanna, etc, their stuff is what I would class as trash. It's mind numbingly stupid, the lyrics are stupid the film clips are stupid, sometimes the beat and stuff are catchy but that's all they have going for them in my opinion.

The old pop from back in the 60's, 70's, 80's and then the corny stuff from the 90's is where it's at!

Most pop music is trash. It is more than just "forget everything and have fun". Alot of what is being said lyrically in pop music is promoting you to be terrible people, but it's said in a light hearted way with bubbly music in the background to make it seem like its all good and nice. Im not literally saying it is evil, but seriously, Id rather have someone come out and say "I dont care, Im going to go get high right now" then to romanticize getting high when in reality, drugs and such mess people's lives up.

Brittany Spears is a perfect example. Most of her music has her being trashy as hell, or pretty much conveys being trashy, yet its upbeat music that can give people the wrong impression (especially in our society). Im all for creative freedom. But there is creative and there is pathetic.

Does dubstep count as pop music? It's awful. I'm pretty open to music, but my god...the definition for "trash" just does not cut it.

Definitely not. I'm a punk rock lover at heart, but it's not the music that's bad it's what certain, so called, "artists" do with it. Some songs I absolutely hate because of some bimbo or retard just going around to make it a slutty song, while another artist can make it and turn it in to something decent. Surely this can't be done with all lyrics, but it's definitely not the music itself, it's the artists in my opinion.

More trash artists out there claiming they can sing. I don't think auto tuning your songs is bad to make them sound better, but if you're using it to make a "song" a song, you might as well keep your mouth shit and pick up writing! :gasp:

''Life is too short for everything to be deep to the core. Enjoy yourself, dance, smile, don't stay focused on seriousness.''

I completely agree with that statement. Pop seems to have its own genre though, has done for ages even though its meant to signify popular music. By that definition you could say popular rock bands are pop music and the same with rappers etc. Personally i like my acoustic music the best and thats down to playing acoustic guitar but im a big fan of bands like ocean colour scene and jon fratelli who are a lot more brit rock and indie. Honestly though if i like a song its cuz i think its good. I dont care what category it falls under. Its me listening to it on my ipod, no one else.

My friend put on a dubstep album on in his car. He was skipping tracks to find the one he liked and i thought it was all just one song. Terrible music (imo ofc)

I'm quite into pop music myself, some of the pop music that was around in say the early 2000's were pretty dam awesome, aqua, spice girls just to name a few, songs like spice up your life, barbie girl and that I loved back in the day as well, I was quite into Day and Night by Billie Piper as well :D

Personally i'm into Japanese rock or punk music, but Pop had it time, every genre of music had it moment, but I do agree, the singers like dubstep or one direction has made pop really pretty much trash atm :lew:

Everyone's taste changes. I think what's on the radio 96% of the time I'm usually turning it off and putting on my Ipod music.

I mean even Foo Fighters is considered pop sometimes. They are the same music for years, but I remember back in early 90's when I liked them. Without pop you wouldn't be able to distinguish what's truly good. I think my tastes are totally different than yours. I get sick of shit a lot.

Lady Gaga isn't a good role model, but she has a good voice. So take it for what it is right? I don't listen to her music, but sometimes something comes on that has a good beat. Justin Timberlake and Beiber were pop and are pop. I mean I despise the band Nsync, but Justin Timberlake is very talented in both singing and entertaining. Justin Beiber has a bunch of famous R&B singers backing him, so his beat is good. His voice is just like New Kids on the block Donnie. He's just a vagina for the most part until he beats a girlfriend like Chris Brown.

Without pop, things would be indistinguishable. The thing I dislike is the Radio Stations not playing darker stuff and/or anti Religion and/or anti government. I would have to use Sirius radio or whatever the XM radio station is.

So Pop is fine, as long as they don't try to pervert everything else with sappy uppity lyrics and/or husband/boyfriend hating crap. It sells we get it, but it's the same thing that I hear when I turn on a country song with a dude who lost his family due to his drinking habit. Just a bunch of self entitled ass holes.

Personally I hate all pop music; it's utter shit. However, I do respect the early artists for their originality. Similarly to how rock in the 50s gave way to what we have now, pop is merely a stepping stone towards better music (or at least it should be). Today's pop music howver is the same bullshit rehashed and made even worse. There's actually scientific proof of this -> http://blogs.scientificamerican.com...-music-evolving-or-is-it-just-getting-louder/

It would be nice if I could find the actual report on it rather than just an overview article but it proves the point.

80s pop is my guilty pleasure! But I couldn't care less for the "artists" on the radio today, except for a very select few (Florence and the Machine being one). Gone are the days when pop music was made with real singers like Freddie Mercury and with real musicians, not shallow images.

pop is... I have never really liked pop.

I think the closest thing I have ever liked to pop is funk. To be honest, I don't even know which artists are in the pop genre... Maybe Katy Perry? or something? I don't know. It's just, it ain't my kind of music. Can't stand it.

I think I like Toxic by Britney Spears, but that's about it. You know, if that's even pop lol

pop music is very manufactured many of those artists aren't geared to go on for many years. the record execs discover these people. get a few albums out and then spit them aside for the next marketable thing. now some people do get lucky and break the cycle. lady gaga would be one of the more recent ones. but for the most part. pop acts only have a 5 year life span before they become yesterdays news. many of them do not write their own music. they are put in front as a face to sell the product.

so to say pop is trash... i must agree.

pop artists never really grind and "pay their dues" like most bands and singers. which is why many pop acts end up in trouble financially and with law when they fall from the spot light.

Mainstream music nowadays are trash especially pop music. My cousins called me "weird" because I don't listen to artist like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga or some crap artist.

Just like how my beloved hip-hop genre have gone underground because many whack ass companies are milking them.

It's happening to rock and metal too, very sad. There are so many bands produced purely around an image, spewing out commercial crap and even more kids thinking that that is all there is to the genre. I don't listen to hiphop but I've heard people say similar things about it. Hell, its even happening to opera, what with singers like Katherine Jenkins and "opera boy bands" like Il Divo, it's awful.

5 years ago I would've said yes, but I've gotten into a lot of pop music as of late. I'm kinda ashamed.... But at the same time I really don't care! Music is music is music is... Okay, enough.

The only music I can't stand is..
Country &
Ghetto gangsta rap from da hood yo.

Other than that, I'm good. I like pop music. It is not trash.
