Last September my ps3 died (YLOD and blinking red), ofcourse sony automatically wipes your hard drive clean if you send it there if they can fix it, if they can't fix it you get a refurbished one.

In order to avoid this, I sent mine to a repair place and they fixed it with a 90 day warranty. Well on friday (day 108) I got the same thing again. I have a feeling that the company will refuse to fix it, even though its only 2 weeks past their warranty on parts. The caveat being that I love the back compatibility, I actually play more ps2 than ps3 games right now.

Questions for you guys-

1) Do I drop another 100$ to get it fixed again? (although I would use a different place that has a 6month warranty) or do I go and get a refurbished one from gamestop for $189?

2)I have backed up my hard drive so all but the most current game's saves should be able to be put on a refurbished one?

You should be able to just get a new one (or used) and swap the hard drives with no problems. Really all comes down to how much money you want to spend to fix it.

That's a good idea if I go with the getting a new one-thanks.

It isn't just the money directly. If my "fixed" system has failed 3.5 months later is it really going to last longer the next time its fixed? Or if I get a refurbished/used one will it last long enough to make up the price difference?

I'm not really sure how long it would last, but maybe the people who did it first didn't do it right? :hmmm: I don't know much at all about the YLOD and what exactly causes it. But if you're worried about it, I'd go for a used one that probably won't get it. Or just buy a PS2 if you want to play the PS2 games :lew:

Good luck finding a new PS3 with backwards comp. No matter what, your PS3 will be refurbished and with that in mind as well as the fact that you have your games backed up, I'd send it to Sony and have them repair it and wipe it clean. I've heard many bad things about most "repair places" who take care of game systems.

yeah i was looking at back compat. ones and they are pretty expensive- so I went for a repair place that offers lifetime warranty.
