can somebody give me an example of what punk rock is? any songs you can suggest? any bands that are good?

American Idiot and Anti-flag's for Blood and Empire are good punk rock albums

Not sure if Rise Against is exactly punk rock but its close to it, and its very very good stuff. Check out their CD;The Sufferer and the Witness.

No. No no no no no no. Unless you like pop punk, these might be enjoyable. If you're looking for definitive punk bands/albums, take it from me, Green Day and Anti-Flag are a prime example of the crap punk has spiraled down into in the past 40 or so years. Especially American Idiot; if you're going to listen to a Green Day album, listen to Dookie. It's still unexciting and generally crap, but it's a lot better than American Idiot.

Punk Rock is a very wide genre. There are some main subgenres of it that you should look into. This includes:
77 Punk: Mostly any punk album or band from the mid/late-70's. Most of these bands started it all, and are more rock n roll influenced. Bands/albums I'd suggest in this genre:

Damned Damned Damned and Machine Gun Etiquette by The Damned
Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols by The Sex Pistols
The Clash and London Calling by The Clash
Stranded by The Saints
Another Music In A Different Kitchen by the Buzzcocks
Crossing The Red Sea by The Adverts
Living in Darkness by Agent Orange
Nervous Breakdown by Black Flag (also a hardcore punk album, as I'll get into later)
Blank Generation by Richard Hell & The Voidoids

Next primary genre would be Hardcore Punk, characterized by short fast songs with an aggressive edge. There's a shit ton of good and bad bands in this genre, but I'm going to give you some really good ones I can think of off the top of my head:
Reagan's In by Wasted Youth
Minor Threat Discography by Minor Threat
Nervous Breakdown and Damaged by Black Flag
Adolescents by Adolescents
Inside My Brain and Back From Samoa by The Angry Samoans
A Mind Is A Terrible Thing by Christ On Parade
Group Sex by the Circle Jerks
All My Friends Are Dead by The Consumers
Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables, Plastic Surgery Disasters, and In God We Trust Inc. by the Dead Kennedys
Team Goon by D.I.
The Record by Fear
Album: Generic by Flipper
Germs MIA: The Complete Anthology by The Germs
What Happens Next? by Ill Repute
Blatant Localism and Valley of the Yakes by JFA

Another genre under punk to check out would be Anarcho-Punk. These bands are generally very anarchist (politically anarchist, mind you, not "OMG ANARCHY LOL") and the albums usually come off as very experimental and at times folky, but just as, if not, angrier than hardcore punk. Check out...
The Feeding of the 5000, Stations Of The Crass, and Yes Sir, I Will by Crass
The Fucking Cunts Treat Us Like Pricks by Flux of Pink Indians
The Day The Country Died and EP-LP by Subhumans
The Ungovernable Force by Conflict
EPs of RP by Rudimentary Peni

There's a ton more Anarcho-punk bands that I can't think of atm, but those are a good start.

Listen to some of those bands, and THAT'S what punk music is. They make Anti-Flag, Green Day, and Blink 182 look like pussies. Probably because they are pussies.

Owning 300+ punk albums, I know what I'm talking about.

lawl no

The Clash and London Calling - The Clash (as mentioned)
Pink Flag and Chairs Missing - Wire (though the latter is more post-punk)
77 - Talking Heads (it's sort of punk anyway)
Cut - The Slits (as above)

you guys are taking it old school. although those bands were punk rock back in the day but now you couldnt really say that. well, i guess you could call american idiot neu punk rock or something :/.

blink 182 isnt punk rock at all....defiantly pop punk. id love to know how green day and antiflag are pop.....thats just retarded imo.

btw lets not be too much of an ass. why diss other peoples music....its all opinion. :/

That's not how it works. All the bands I mentioned are simply punk. Time does not deteriorate their fucking genre, thank you very much. They were punk rock and they ARE punk rock.

And factually speaking GREEN DAY AND ANTI-FLAG ARE POP PUNK. You cannot deny this. xD It's the genre; the makeup of the music and the way it is played defines its genre. That and their attitude is pretty pussy and stupid and manufactured. I went to an Anti-Flag show and the whole crowd turned into a bunch of pussies when they came on set. I felt like I was at a fucking Backstreet Boys concert or something.

Seriously dude, don't question me. I know what I'm fucking talking about.

To the OP: Stay away from American Idiot for the love of god, it's an abomination of everything "punk" and musical. Same with Anti-Flag, because they suck.

EDIT: Oh and you probably won't find half that shit on youtube.

Oh and thanks to the guy who mentioned Talking Heads: 77 and Pink Flag by Wire, I forgot about those. They're great albums.

If you want something more 'well known', I'd suggest The Cretans, Rancid, The Vandals, and The Misfits.

For Rancid, I'd suggest the albums:
Rancid
And Out Come the Wolves
Life Won't Wait
Rancid (2000)

and for The Vandals, I'd stick with their first two, Peace Thru Vandalism and When In Rome, Do As The Vandals. A lot of people seem to like Live Fast Diarrhea but they took a pop-punk turn there and kind of lost their humor, since their original vocalist left and they recruited Dave-boring-Quackenbush.

I was never fond of the Misfits, but lots of people seem to like them too.

Oh, wow! The same goes for me. All of my friends or just plain random people I meet all seem to love them and give me a cocked brow when I say I don't care for them much. I don't know, just not very appealing to me.

I didn't mind the turn in The Vandals, because I love kinds of music. Still sounds good to me, but it sucks that they lost that initial flare they had.

The Misfits are one of those bands that's extremely irrelevant to punk, yet for some reason (probably because of the growing horror movie/horror punk trend arising) everyone apparently loves them. The only thing I can think of that they did that was in the least bit relevant was jumpstarting Horror Punk, which is mostly a crappy genre in itself, which in turn inspired Horrorcore, and that means Insane Clown Posse. You can figure out the awful crashing conclusion yourself.

But yeah, I don't necessarily hate the Vandals switch, but I enjoy their first two releases far more than anything else they've done. The wit, tongue-in-cheek, and dry humor of their early works were incredible if you ask me. Especially Stevo's intentionally whiny and pathetic rendition of "Heartbreak Hotel". :P

EDIT: Oh and if you look at some of the lyrics the Misfits wrote, they fucking suck. "Demonomania" comes to mind:

Look upon me
I am the beast

Demonomania, Demonomania, Demonomania
My father was a wolf
Demonomania, Demonomania, Demonomania
My mother was a whore

You check and see
Reality of the wolf
It's in the blood
I wanna be the fucking savior

Humans are weak
What else you fucking do
Humans are weak
I want your blood

Demonomania, Demonomania, Demonomania
My father was a wolf
Demonomania, Demonomania, Demonomania
My mother was a whore
Demonomania, Demonomania, Demonomania
My mother was a whore
Demonomania, Demonomania, Demonomania
My father was a wolf

PURE GENIUS.

lol dude
just because you say something doesn't make it a fact. its all opinion, but...
i find it hilarious how you think anti-flag and green day are pop-punk...
pop is like kelly clarkson, new found glory, simple plan, etc... and anti-flag and green day (american idiot) aren't even close to that. rofl at the 16 year old who thinks he's a music expert.

Punk pop is certainly a sub-genre of punk. It's pretty much mainstream rock that's slightly alternative/ edgy.

Anyway OP, I'll mention a few bands that haven't been mentioned before.
The Ramones
Propaghandi
Pennywise
Gallows
The Jam (though they're not really punk, they don't sound to different to The Clash)

You don't get it, and you're making yourself look even more stupid. xD This is not opinion.
FACTUALLY SPEAKING, COMRADE, IN THE FIELD OF GENRES, GREEN DAY AND ANTI-FLAG ARE POP PUNK. IT IS A GENRE. IT IS CALLED POP PUNK, AND THE MUSIC THEY PRODUCE IS POP PUNK. GET OVER IT.
And hey, The fucking Ramones were pop punk too, and they were brilliant, so I'm not dissing the genre of pop punk. I'm saying that Green Day and Anti-Flag are piss-poor examples of punk, and the fucking OP asked for punk rock, not dumbed down bullshit.

Again, I SAID POP PUNK. NOT POP. They're two completely fucking different things.

And yes, it seems, in relation to you, I am a music expert. Seeing that you can't even grasp the concept of genres.

If you refuse to accept that Green Day and Anti-Flag are pop-punk, you're simply being ignorant.

I'd consider old Greenday to be more punky. New Greenday especially their newest album, has definitely become Pop-Punk. Actually, I'd probably label it as alt rock now, and not even put it in the punk category with where they are currently.

Also, age has nothing to do with it, and you shouldn't judge someone's intelligence based on how old they are.

Pigeon holing bands into sub genre upon sub genre is a silly task best left for pretentious music "journalists" and internet nitpickers. Let them argue whether band X is "opera vegan industrial hardcore" or "wagnerian colostomy bag cute-core" or whatever silly terms they can come up with. It's all rock 'n' roll to me.

As far as some punk bands go, I quite like The Misfits, but Samhain was even better and by far my favourite band of those Glenn Danzig has been involved with. Some other recommendations would be Brocas Helm and Venom which are metal bands, but have a certain punk sensibility to their music which I by far prefer over actual punk.

pop is part of pop punk.......if you say they are pop punk, they are obviously partly pop. how is that different??? green day and antiflag arent a certain genre because they are mainstream....its about their sound. and they dont sound at all like pop at all. green day might have an alternative kind of sound at times but defiantly not pop. :/ i dont get you kid....chill out. its mostly opinion, stop acting like a maniac. you dont have to blow F-bombs and get all pissy to make a point.

and btw....the ramones ARE pop punk....BECAUSE THEY ACTUALLY SOUND LIKE IT...at least imo. pop punk(and/or pop rock) imo is Blink 182, NFG, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Jet Lag Gemini, Taking Back Sunday, Yellowcard....etc.

I'd consider old Greenday to be more punky. New Greenday especially their newest album, has definitely become Pop-Punk. Actually, I'd probably label it as alt rock now, and not even put it in the punk category with where they are currently.
i agree on that for sure. its defiantly not punk and defiantly alternative.....but its still doesnt come off to me as poppy lol.

If you're looking at punk in general, then The Sex Pistols are a great band to start with. The Clash would fall nicely too, they were brilliant; particularly with London Calling.
As for slightly newer, Weezer are quite good and Gallows, but they're taking it a little further into hardcore.
