Whats the point?
You get quite a few gfx sites where members get assigned numbers. Usually between 1-10 or 1-20. The higher the number the better they are. I think its stupid. Say im a 9/20 and person B is a 10/20. Whats the differnce? Where do you get the extra number from? Whats the differnce between a 9 and a 10.
People who rate themselves i think either just want to inflate theyre ego or bring down someone elses. Its petty and pointless.

I don't think you can assign someone with a specific number, because it's all about your opinion on art. So yes, it's just a number, and an invalid one at that. Someone can say this and this artist is great, while to your personal viewing it's crap.

It's all about taste and preference. :lew:

I hate the rating thing, too. It's just so different with everyone that it just means nothing. For example, I really love my icon but someone said it was way too plain. They might think I'm a 1-10 but I have friends that say I'm at least a 7/8-10.

What we create is art. Art is subjective. With art, comes different views and opinions. No one can really "rate" anything. :/

Oh i never thought about that silly rate the sig above you thread.
Thats a thread i find utterly pointless tbh. Again its just an ego kinda thing/people pleasing thing. I would be better without the marking outta 10. People never see whats written and only ever see the number. And if its not what they expect then theyre hurt/offended.

I post in there because it's the easiest way to get feedback. the only thing, people never write what they like or dislike about the sig anymore. So the thread is kinda pointless. Seeing a set of numbers doesn't tell me what I need to improve on. It's just... numbers. :/

Id say its defiantely a thing newer GFXrs post in :hmmm:
Everyone likes/wants to hear nice things tho so you cant blame them but its not an accurate way to get feedback. Sometimes numbers are theyre based solely on the character in the sig :wacky:

A site I'm on has something similar to this, but it's more helpful(imo) than hurtful :hmmm:. Pretty much, you submit 5 of your most recent and/or best works, and they class you based solely on those pieces. It's pretty funny sometimes. :lew:.

I understand what you mean about people being rated at 9 or 10. The difference isn't really measurable. I also know what you mean about those dickheads who like to look down on other people, thinking they're gods of gee eff ex.

But the more I think about it, I don't think it's that bad of a thing. Why do we rate anything? Like movies, TV shows, books, music artists etc etc. The number isn't set in stone and it doesn't even matter that much, it just gives other people an idea of how much you or someone else likes something because that's way easier to understand than just saying "I liked A a lot, B not so much but C was a bit better".
I think Trainspotting is a 11/10 film, others think it's 6/10. Who's right? Who's wrong? Is that even an appropriate question to ask when it's just subjective... ?

It's the same with GFX and stuff. You can just take the number and comments and do whatever you want with them. Personally, I like ratings/grades just so I can get feedback and see another person's perspective, and I can choose to dismiss it or take it in. I think it helps me get better but that's just me.

Also, Mitsuki has a good quote on her art site:
"I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure--which is: try to please everybody."

-Herbert Bayard Swope

Food for thought. :)

I don't think it makes any sense tbh. That's why I've never posted in it. A rating doesn't really tell you anything, and I was going to go post about another person's I realized that I was just using the word like a lot, and what does that mean? I really like this, I dislike this, but I'm not them and I'm not every person.

But then sometimes critique can be helpful, and I like to hear it when it's more than I don't like that picture, or not detailed enough. Of course i do mostly horrible work, so I'm not even important in the conversation. :wacky:

But I do dislike people who take things way too seriously and look down anyone else. No one is so good that they're perfection, and no one is so bad that they're hopeless. Honestly the reason I post a lot of my stuff for critique is to make me look at and see the flaws it has to myself. I don't worry so much about what other people say if it doesn't agree with what I believe.

And I'm new to GFXing, but I don't see the importance of making something that gets a 10 from someone, if it's shit to me.

Anyway, that's my (unwanted) two cents. :wacky:
