Iv always wondered why, when In the ShinRa HQ and you rescue Red XIII he says he was named Red XIII by Hojo & you can call him what you wish.... Why didn't he just say he had the name Nanaki??

Hmm, they didn't really explain why. I don't think there's really any special reason behind the whole matter either. It just so happens that Square decided to use Red XIII as the primary name for him.

But if there is any reason, then I think that it has to do with his shame of being Seto's son, therefore the name Nanaki didn't appeal to him anymore. Who knows?

It was probably because he was used to people calling him what they wished. I don't really know

Maybe ... he was ashamed of being Seto's son. So he got used to being called Red XIII in his time at Shinra and told the gang to call him what he wanted.

Was ther any mention to how long ShinRa held him for? I just assumed they'd captured him about the same time they caught Aeris as they were both gunna be cloned at the same time

It wasn't until after he found out that Seto did a great thing that he told people he was named Nanaki. He didn't embrace the until then so he didn't really have a name untill hojo named him Red XIII. You think there were 12 other 'Reds'

Well they were suppose to be clones that could become Seph and only one that did what it was suppose to do was Cloud who in the end beats crap out of Seph.

Ancients? Along with the guys in the black capes
Yes. They all turned out to be successes. However, Cloud was a failure and yet had the power to defeat the real Sephiroth.

Hojo wanted to breed both Aeris and Red XIII because they were two different species. He knew what breed Aeris was, but may not have known what breed Red is. It's not really revealed, but we refer to him as a lion type creature.

He named him Red because of his fur and XIII because he was the thirteenth experiment before Aeris.

That's why I think it's come to be known that he's known as Red XIII.

Someone at the canyon actually says nanakis back - not Red himself, I think it then goes onto explain that Red is infact Nanaki, but I guess the whole thing about him not wanting to use his name through shame could be right. It the only thing that seems to make sense anyway

And also yeah, the other numbers were the Sephiroth clones that you see knocking about in Nibelheim

Yeah i remembered then being ancient which is why i remembered him. Before you through the cave under Cozmo Canyon he is refered to as nanaki by residents and that floating guy(I forget his name) but he doesn't call himself nanaki until afterwords.

Okay, lets get this straight. Nanaki doesnt find out what his fathers true intentions were when he "Ran" from the village and "Abandoned his mate" along with his pup Nanaki. he came to Cosmo Canyon and his Grandfather (Not really just a family friend/his godfather type thing) says Nanaki is back! and the whole party was inquiring who Nanaki was. this is when you find out his name was nanaki. THEN he finds out that his dad went to the back to defend the village/canyon. and he says "12 other 'reds'". there wernt 12 other sephiroths. there had been 12 other experiments of ancients including sepheroth himself. cloud was one of them. but the 13th one was Nanaki, and his fur was red so now you get the term "Red XIII". he is my favorite character and i did a lot of research on him about a year back. this is where i get most of my info from. thanks for reading

*good question! i guess the writers thought "Red XIII" would be a cooler name than "Nanaki".my theory is that red XIII was the original name given by the creatore but just to give him more depth in his story they gave him a name which had a past rather than a lab name :)

HAHA they were gonna breed redxii and aeris? that would be wierd, both characters have now gone up in my book.

do you think some perverts have done the 'breeding' as hentai not that id look i just find it hilarious

Though I like the theory about how he was ashamed of his father being the reason he didn't care what they called him...

And I agree that "Red XIII" comes from Hojo calling him "Red" based on his species' fur and "XIII" because he's the Thirteenth experiment...

But I think you are all reading WAY too far into this. He just met, and was rescued by a group of complete strangers... He helped them only to aid his own escape, and to repay them for saving him. Other than that, he had
no desire to venture on with them, until after the events at Cosmo Canyon. At the time, Nanaki thought he would only travel with them for a short time and afterwards would never have anything to do with them. The way I see it, he didn't care what they called him, because his past and real name were none of their business as temporary travel companions. As he was apparently used to being called by the wrong title, he didn't much care WHAT he was called.

That's how I see it anyway

Well if you ever have the inclination to custom name him "Nanaki" when you replay the game, you'll find you run into some crazy dialogue when you reach Cosmo Canyon.

Something along the lines of "Nanaki's real name was Nanaki?"
