Rumors have been floating around for quite some time about Slant Six, former developer of SOCOM, working on a brand new Resident Evil title. Today, we're here to officially validate those rumors along with giving you the very first detail on the upcoming title.

REstory.jpg

Hitting this Winter, gamers will be able to get their hands on Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Our friends over at the Official Xbox Magazine have the official cover story this month, and while we'll list a few details, you'll have to pick up their May issue to find out everything!

  • The game takes place in 1998, a time where Resident Evil fans already know what's set to take place. The title lets you enjoy the series from a new perspective, as the men and women who are technically responsible for it all.
  • Rather than continuing the zombie slaying antics of BSAA agents, you're taken back to the original outbreak "that underscored both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis."
  • The game doesn't require any crazy amounts of knowledge of the past titles or characters involved in the series. The title opens up to a "quartet of new faces". Essentially, you're playing as members of the official Umbrella Security Services squad.
  • Operation Raccoon City is a team-based shooter allowing four members of the USS team to destroy all evidence of the ongoing outbreak. Along with slaying the zombies, you're looking to "kill pretty much every survivor possible".
  • The gameplay is described as "dirty", and the series will feel much darker than it has up to this point.
  • The game features three factions that Capcom has stated make up a "three-corner conflict". The other two factions are the US Spec Ops, who are there to repel the USS, and the "bio-organic weapon monsters (BOWs) created by Umbrella.
  • The USS team is made up of the following characters: Vector, Beltway, Bertha, and Spectre. Depending on which character you choose, the responsibilities that you're asked to do within your team will variate.
  • Hunk, first seen in Resident Evil 2 as a hidden character, is the inspiration behind the USS team.
  • "Whichever team you play on, you'll be facing Umbrella-created horrors in between skirmishes with each other".
  • Zombies in the game can sense you in three different manners: sight, sound, and smell.
  • A situation is described in the game where Vector cloaks himself to stir up previously slumbering zombies to use against the Special Ops military foes.
  • Quite a few scenarios in the game aren't "all about headshots". A quote in the article states, "It's about shooting the other soldiers - manipulating the, making them bleed."
  • The game will take you through a number of familiar areas if you're a Resident Evil junkie who remembers your journey to Raccoon City.
  • Operation Raccoon City, depending on how you play the game, will give you the option to "change the history of Resident Evil". Not only will you have the chance to meet and interact with various characters from the series, but you'll even have the opportunity to kill them.
  • One of th mottos repeated to OXM throughout the demo was "Kill Leon". It's also stated that if you choose to represent in the game as the Special Ops team, that you'd more than likely have the goal of trying to save Leon Kennedy.
  • Slant Six or Capcom won't reveal if any other characters will be playable in the title just yet, but it'd make sense to see quite a few big cameos.
  • The title will still see players relying on collecting herbs to heal from any attacks you may suffer. You won't need to hoard any herbs, but they'll still benefit you to collect them throughout the game.
  • "This is not a one-versus-one game where you've got one clip full of ammo and zombies on you. If you've ever thought of those times in an RE game when you thought, 'I'd wish I had a big gun', that's what this game is. It's not fair to give people big guns, then take all the ammo away."
  • One of the pictures in the article showcases a zombie being used as a "meatshield".
  • Operation Raccoon City allows players to earn XP for kills, with these points helping you survive the onslaught, and to help to encourage you to anihilate everything in your path.
  • The XP will allow you to earn new abilities, such as Vector's cloaking skill, and new weapons.
  • Tyrants will most definitely be included in the title.
There's a ton of details listed above, but there's even more listed in the May 2011 issue of the Official Xbox Magazine. Don't forget to be on the lookout for the issue to hit store shelves to get even more details on Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City!

Here is the official teaser trailer.

And here is a interview video with the producer of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.

Been keeping up the details on this game for a while, as a fan of RE myself.

The fact that SOCOM producers are working on this title is a very high put off for me. Seeing that SOCOM games fail nowadays, and they're gonna put their hands on such a prestigious title and make it already worst then as it is.

Sometimes I wish Capcom would take the time on RE games and make it original again. Back to the Zombie roots in the Mansion.

I love the look of this game, I hope it comes out soon so I can check out what they have done with the franchise I Enjoyed 1,2, and 3 more than 4 and 5 as they moved away from the Natural Zombies and moved through to parasites, but it will be cool to get back natural Mutation based Zombies and would be cool to slay them once more

Capcom’s announced Resident Evil: Operation Racoon City for a winter release on PS3, 360 and PC, confirming Canadian studio Slant Six Games is developing the title.

The news follows an info dump in the latest issue of OXM US. It’s now been confirmed that you’ll play as a part of the Umbrella Security Services, either by yourself or as part of a four-way co-op mode.

The story sees the USS being given orders to eliminate all evidence of a T-Virus outbreak and kill any survivors. The US government sends out its own forces to try and expose Umbrella’s actions and uncover the cause of the outbreak.

The game will feature the return of iconic locations from Racoon City as well as regular characters, including Leon Kennedy.

Fans of the series will have the chance to rewrite history in the series, as you experience events from Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 from the Umbrella side.

NeoGAF‘s added even more information gleaned from OPM, which mentions that one of the main missions in the game is to “kill Leon” which will enable players to change the aforementioned course of the series’ history. Leon is the gamer’s “main prey” throughout the game in regards to the USS team, which takes its inspiration from Mr. Death himself and is situated on Rockfort Island.

Hunters and Lickers were confirmed for the game, and will be able to “mow down zombies if they’re in the way of their destruction.”

Players will also get more insight into Mr. X before he was sent to Raccoon City after Leon and Claire, and the demo shown to OPM had players battling it out with him at one point.

Gameplay will allow for cover behind stationary objects as well use enemies for cover, adding to the game’s team-based strategic style. Destructible objects in the game will allow players to take out zombies, and shooting lights will also will help keep the zombies away as they are attracted to light.

A new control scheme has been implemented to mimic the more modern control settings of third-person shooters, which according to the magazine is why Capcom approached Slant Six over the development.

As mentioned in the OXM report last week, and previously rumoured, SOCOM Confrontation devs Slant Six is handling development duties.

Capcom didn’t provide assets with the announcement, but GAF‘s posted three GameReactor front covers and the cover from the issue of OXM featuring the game as well as its logo, which we’ve posted here.

Update#1

A few months back, we helped break the news on the very first official information regarding Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City. Today, we're back with a good bit more of information for the upcoming zombie shooter being developed by Slant Six.

REORCstory.jpg

In the July 2011 issue of the Official Playstation magazine, more information is revealed on your zombie experience this holiday season. Below, we've listed a few of the details from the article.

  • The game will offer four distinct character classes: Recon, Medic, Surveilance, and Heavy Weapons. Recon can move quite a bit faster than Medic, while Heavy Weapons can take the most damage out of all the classes.
  • Each class also offers nine different abilities and twelve firearms. Gamers only get one of each, leaving quite a few possibilities to leave your opposition guessing.
  • Operation Raccoon City offers Team Attack mode, which relies on points and not kills to determine the winning team. Basic kills are worth five points, and teams can earn more points by drawing zombies to their opponents and killing special monsters, such as Hunters, that appear later on.
  • Quite a few enemies are mentioned in the article: zombies, Hunters, Tyrants, Spec Ops soldiers, and Leon Kennedy.
  • The game differs much from traditional Resident Evil titles in the aiming department, as you'll be able to aim while moving. You'll also have the ability to hard-lock to cover, regenerate health, and blind fire.
  • The build played by OPM didn't feature an experience or upgrade system, btu the team hasn't ruled one out for the final build.
  • Raccoon City also features a melee system, letting you escape encounters within enemies. The melee system is said to include some "flashy kung-fu acrobatics", though they'll leave you unbalanced and vulnerable to other enemies.
  • Zombies can be used as a human shield.
  • Using a non-lethal shot on an enemy can attract nearby zombies to their newly formed wound.

Update#3

wo new characters were revealed during E3 for the upcoming squad-based shooter Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. These new characters were actually seen in the game’s E3 trailer but they weren’t named until E3 kicked off.

You can check out both new characters in the images below. Lupo is the USS squad leader and her special ability sees her weapon turn gold, enabling you to gain unlimited ammo for a limited time, but trust me it’ll be more than enough time to get a horde of zombies off you and to wreck through Spec Ops forces. Then you have Four Eyes who is the field scientist of the squad and her special ability grants her power over BOW’s. Yes, you can take cotrol of Hunters and Lickers while her special is engaged, though for a limited time. This should prove to be quite a useful ability in tense online bouts.

I'm no fan of third person shooters in general. I love gears of war though and if this is like gears I might buy it..so far I'm not impressed and wished this was first person.

In all honesty, the first time I saw gameplay footage I just though it looked like a cheap third person shooter... my opinion still hasn't change. Personally I think it just looks like a really bad version of Gears and Uncharted. Maybe the guy playing it just isn't that great but stepping side to side for the majority of the video shooting things that run towards him just seems extremely boring.

Play as Resident Evil All-Stars in Operation Raccoon City Multiplayer

Capcom released a new trailer for the multiplayer portion of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. The trailer showcases a slew of stars from Resident Evil’s past blasting zombies and grumbling canned tag lines. Check out the new trailer after the break.
Capcom also announced that the game is officially due out on March 20, 2012. Via Venture Beat.

I'd only get this game to have a shot at taking out Mr. X, Nemesis and a whole lot of Lickers. Not really a keeper like the other games I possess though. But this looks like an entertaining game to play with friends.

Multiplayer modes in the game include:

  • Team Deathmatch - Battle for the most kills in brutal triple threat chaos that leaves players never knowing what’s behind them, an element that could only exist in the twisted Resident Evil universe.
  • Biohazard mode – Make sure samples of the G-virus are returned safely to their base while fighting off all the competing forces at play in Raccoon City.
  • Survivors mode – Try to survive the horror just a little bit longer while waiting for rescue. There’s limited space on board a helicopter so fight off the opposition and survive the hordes of hungry zombies, risking infection if they get too close.
  • Heroes Mode – Previously announced, this mode allows fans to play as one of their favorite Resident Evil characters, including Leon S. Kennedy, Hunk or Jill Valentine.
Check out a video featuring the modes below.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City will be available for PS3 and Xbox 360 on March 20 in North America and March 23 in the UK. A date for the PC version has yet to be announced.

Capcom has announced the PC version of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City will be releasing on May 18. The firm has also released a new Brutality trailer, showing off all the wonderfully sadistic things you can do to zombies in the game such as shoving grenades in their mouth, setting them on on fire and kicking them in the head. Operation Raccoon City launches in North America on March 20 and in Europe on March 23 for PS3 and Xbox 360.

@Pants @Soulcorruptor @Rapture

The game is going to have 4 player co-op.

Capcom said:
  • Campaign Mode - both single player and up to 4 player co-op: You are part of the Umbrella Security Service. Protect the truth behind the T-Virus outbreak by any means necessary.
That means all four of us can play together, although, others will have to wait until someone else quits if they wanna play with the rest of the gang.

And just to make it easy for people, these people are getting the game.

Starting March 22, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City zombies will start popping up at landmarks as part of an “interactive mass-participatory game, where the narrative themes of Resident Evil will come to life in the real world.”
The game will feature augmented reality zombies accessible by gamers with a specially built mobile app available on iPhone and Android from the Resident Evil microsite and Capcom’s Facebook page.
A number of lucky gamers will be selected to take part in missions across Bristol, Manchester and London.
London players will be treated to a live event, entering the challenge to hunt around the capital’s urban environments after a mission briefing from operatives in a zombie-free location.
“This real-world game is the perfect opportunity to bring the horror, drama and edge-of-the seat gaming out into the real world. Operation Raccoon City – UK Takeover promises to be one the most memorable weekend of 2012,” said the firm in the press release.
Ben Mason from The Tom Sawyer Effect, is staging the live action and the augmented reality zombies are being built by Digicave.

There is up to four players co-op Ellie Toldies

I like that they are finally putting together a big multiplayer component for one of the console games, that isn't just storyline co-op. I'm really looking forward to seeing HUNK's squad, though as I recall they all died bar him when they were hunted down by Birkin
