Ok, I have seen...some who dislike the idea of approval. I'm making this thread so people who are on opposing sides of this can discuss it.

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a thread made for or by the mods, it is a thread that struck me as something that might be necessary here, as many seem to disagree with approval/disapproval of bios. hence, this thread was not made to influence the decisions of the mods, and should not do so.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

So, let's come tell the All-Powerful Allsie (being me :D) why we don't/do want bio approvals. Make sure you give valid reasons, as I have no doubt the mods will warn you for spamming if you do not adlib on your choices.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I believe in approval/disapproval. It prevents severe cases of god-modding. Before, it was like someone could come in with my ex-bios, with a super all-powerful character and still RP with it. Now, there are actually limits on how strong you can be.

Discuss and vote.

Yes we need it. It keeps characters from being ultra power or having no points of interest at all. It also makes sure we have quality writers and people who have a real idea of what it means to come up with a character/story etc. Letting just whoever walk in, say a few lines, and then run a story would be stupid.

You know the solution to this might be to have two seperate sections for approved and unnapproved bios. Some people are really into RPing; and put a lot of effort into bio creation. Other members just wanna get right to it.

I think we do, but then again it's something I'm used to.

Although I agree there are players out there who just want to hurry up and play, I have seen enough one-liner posts to want to keep the approval system intact. They've been popping up in URPGs. Who knows how long it'll be before they leak into ORPGs.

Sure, messing around in a Survivor situation with your favorite characters in the URPG section can be fun for awhile. But after seeing (and playing in) FFIX Survivor...well, we might need to come up with something to help with the mess. I'll admit to trying to encourage players to just post a brief bio in URPG discussion threads and leaving the creator of the URPG to decide who stays and who doesn't, since just writing up an entire bio for a character we already know can be a hassle.

To be quite frank, reading through some of these URPGs makes me wonder just how many of these players have English as their first language. Most of the posts I've seen are either extremely short, bears no spelling/grammar/punctuation/syntax, or a mix of both points. Honestly, people...how hard is it to write over three complete sentences? Subject and verb, punctuation and spelling, capitalization...any of this ringing a bell? Hell, the least you should do is download a new version of Mozilla Firefox so it can check your spelling for you.

Not to mention, you players have a lot more to work with than just your character's actions. You have emotion, dialogue, thoughts, NPC/player interaction, surroundings, local flora and fauna, etc. Just describing the location your character is in would be able to give your post a decent size.

Then send them to neopets imo. Seriously, lets hold ourselves above fourth grade writing.

Pretty much sums it up. Plus, I think it's quite comforting to know there's a sense of balance, and so no one is stuck at the bottom of the totem pole.

Ahem...
As I stated...some people are much more adamant about role playing than others. lol. Perhaps we can find a happy medium so that everyone can be happy?

Well we do have the original and unoriginal sections as it is...
I think the unoriginal section is somewhat bogus as is...maybe we could alter it a little?

Heheh, I won't offer any argument against sending the *cough*Horrible*cough* people not interested in quality RPing somewhere else unimportant and out of the way. :p

Love em or hate em, those 'terrible' RPs are the only active ones at the moment. Maybe if we had more thriving ORPs this sentiment of segregation could fly, but right now, we're teetering on death without the mindless babble filling out these forums. We need to get at least a little more active before we can have the right to complain about... anything, really.

Back onto the topic of this thread, I of course believe in the sanctity of bio approval. However, I also think that the UORP section is fine with it's current policy of 'characters approved by game runner'. I do not think much should be changed from it's current state, except I would like SOME of those UORPs to actually be run in the proper section. I mean, how can Alexandria sill be completely empty?

Actually, Hyoutan is right here. There aren't many good ORPGs going on at the moment. I doubt that very many members really feel like originating and controlling an ORPG of their own; it seems more like most members just want to jump in and join pre-existing RPs...

I would be willing to work with someone to put together a few nice ORPGs so that the members will be more encouraged to create biographies. =]

RP approval will always be needed to some level but personally I find that approval doesn't need to be very strict and in most cases RP aproval doesn't need to be done by the mods.

For URPG the standard for bios seems to be very low so there's hardly need for approval there.
For ORPG it's better to let the creator of each story decide what characters are fitting so again no need for mods to give approval before the creator disallows it anyway.
For RPB approval could be needed but if people want to battle each other with unaproved bios I see no problems as long both parties give their consent.

Though I said that URPG has lower standards this is not always true, in some cases you can expect creators of URPG to ask good writing skills to make the RP enjoyable for everyone. It's just that in many cases URPG's are retellings of games and anime.

I don't have much time so I can't be bothered with creating an RP I'm just going to wait and see if anything good shows up.

As far as ORPGs go, we don't want to force you to change anything in your original bios that makes your character unique...e.g. wings; which is debatable as far as being a god-like power...

Yes...let's take wings and flight for example.

It all depends on how the member portrays their character. A character could have wings and have full flight powers, which is a huge dissadvantage to other members...but if members limit themselves...for example to levitation or...giving their character the ability to fly; but only for brief distances, or just a few feet above the ground...then it isn't so much of a dissadvantage for other RPers...

As far as waiting for something good to pop up in the RP section...I said, I'm willing to create a few decent RPs, but first of all, I have to know what the members want. =]

Oh and just a side note...
There are so many inactive members who have bios in the RP section...and we want to approve the bios of active members first and foremost.
So if there's anyone out there who currently has an unnaproved bio and needs approval, just give us a shout and we'll get right to it! ^__^
