I've done some research on Final Fantasy IV because I haven't played it yet and its not out in the UK until september, but I noticed something.

Apparently Rydia is a child, 7 years old, so how come in the DS version her design makes her look like a teenager or adult? I mean what 7 year old has boobs?

Surely someone else has noticed this and wondered why?

When you first met Rydia she is a child. When Rydia leaves your party... This is kind of a spoiler but, Rydia becomes a summoner.
When the party is leaving on Cid's boat it gets attack by Leviathan. The summon sucks Rydia into the
underworld, which the summoner town is located at. In the summoner world time goes by fast, so Rydia grew up in a short amount of time. Rydia eventually returns to the main party.

Aha! So that explains it. Yeah it's been bothering me ever since I played the GBA version.
I got to the part where the summon sucked her up and all
, but quit playing shortly after that, so I never knew. Ah well, I don't mind knowing ahead of time. =]

How old is she when she makes a return to the party? It's something thats picked my brains before!

Cerridwen is right. In the summon's world, time flow is faster, so by the time she returned to the party, she had grown up. Simple.

So when i stayed in the summon's world for 2 days with my characters because i let the ps2 on... they actually got older!? :O

Uh, I'm not completely sure if I am understanding you or not.

Basically, as stated above, time flows faster in the summoner's world. So while your other characters were off doing whatever, Rydia was growing up in the summoners world. You're characters did not age because time was still flowing normally where they were. They did not age because you left your PS2 on.

That's something I'd like to know too. As child she's around the age of six but I've never seen her 'adult' age stated anywhere.

Great. Now I feel like an idiot. I had no idea about the <spoiler>, and so I really didn't understand how she looked old in the manual and young in the game (and sounded young), and why she threw a tantrum after the Village of Mist.

She's about as old as Rosa when she returns.

But how did she get through the passage to the feymarch (land of the eidolons)?
I mean, for a child, aren't those monsters abit strong ?

she was swallowed by levaiathan who happens to be the king of summons, so im pretty sure when he returned to the summon world he didnt go through tht cave and even if he did Rydia wouldnt have to worry.

on another note, Edge (the ninja) makes some flirty comments towards rydia, sure she grew up faster but is it right for him to date a 6 year old in a 16+ year old body?

Well since Edge starts hitting on after she has returned from the land of the summons. I think it's fairly safe to assume that Rydia is roughly the same age as Edge (who is 26) so I reckon she is in her early to mid 20's when she returns from the land of the summons.

I agree. Edge would probably know better than to hit on someone much much younger than him. Her looks probably convinced him that she was at least 18 or so.... Otherwise its RAPE...! Lol.

But, to think of it, the time flow must be really fast though, since she aged this much in like probably a week or two. Estimating the time Cecil took to transform into EX Mode (Lol, Dissidia style, which means Paladin, if you don't catch the joke), and go underground and get thrashed by Golbez..

He'd know better, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't do it. :gmonster:

As far as I recall, she wasn't mentally a six year old any longer. The time just flowed much faster in the summoner land, so she actually was. It's kinda like in the first season of Digimon, they spent months in the Digital World while time barely moved in the real world. When they came back to the real world for a few days/weeks, years had gone by in Digiworld.

I always figured she was about 18-22 when she re-enters the party. Not quite the same age as Cecil or Rosa, but not very much youunger either.

BUT... the real mystery is in FFIV:The After.
Her official age in that game is 24. However, that game takes place 17 years after FFIV - makes sense, because in Earth years she was still 6 years old even though she grew up in a rapid amount of time. Somehow, Rydia still looks like a 20 something year old, when in actuality she should look closer to her 40's.

Unless she found somewhere where the reverse flow is true.
Or she specifically has been retarding her age magically so she can spend time in the feymarch without too deleterious effects.
Or they're counting her age as in normal years since she was born, as opposed to her physical age, the opposite of what they did with Vincent.

Question: Where are you seeing her age? I'm not picking it up on the official site.

Rydia looked way too older even if she stayed in the so-called summon's world. I only got to when i have to go the the place where metal items cannot be worn at ALL.

rydia is mentally and physically an adult. during her time in Feymarch, she aged very quickly, meaning that she became an adult mentally and physically but in rapid time. i got this of the ff wiki. it stated : "In reality, Leviathan took Rydia to the Feymarch, the home of all Eidolons. Time moves faster in the Feymarch, so while Cecil and his allies were separated from Rydia for only a short period of time, years went past in the Feymarch, and Rydia grew into a young woman at an accelerated rate."
