Square Enix has just announced the much-anticipated Tomb Raider reboot, simply known just as Tomb Raider.

The game will be developed at Crystal Dynamics. No date or platforms are mentioned.

Square promises the game will make us “forget everything” we know about Lara Croft, as we see her “young and inexperienced” in a “journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive.”

Tomb Raider will get its full reveal in the next issue of Game Informer. We’ve added the cover art for the issue from its site below. Here’s the snip from the mag:
“In our world-exclusive cover story, we uncover a brand-new Lara Croft. Rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise through an origin story wasn’t so much a choice as an act of necessity, according to Crystal Dynamics. Drastic measures were needed. To build an entirely fresh Lara – a culturally relevant hero worth of the attention that once came so effortlessly – they must break her first. In this new adventure – simply titled Tomb Raider – a younger and inexperienced Lara Croft must endure both physical and emotional trauma to survive.”
“Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider,” said Crystal Dynamics head, Darrell Gallagher.

“This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other.”

I like this idea.. The idea of younger Lara Croft in an origin story certainly is interesting. This new image of Lara will certainly have to grw on people. I miss the glamorous one now :sad3: Who knows maybe she wil look pretty at some point. Even though here she looks like she is in a horrific place. :hmmm:

Sounds interesting.

I like Tomb Raider, and I've always wanted more story and growth.

What could a reboot of Tomb Raider possibly offer except bouncier HD boobs?

GO REMAKE VII YA TOSSERS. >.>

Just to clarify to people in case, this is not a remake of any kind as there already was one on the PS2 a few years back. The reboot would be kind of like what they tried to do with the recent Sonic games and Prince of Persia, so I'm treating this as any new Tomb Raider game minus a subtitle. And before any pessimists declare that SE will ruin the game or something, remember that they're not making the game, only publishing it. So Cloud and his Buster Sword will not randomly come in to save Lara at the last minute in some dangerous situation or something. :wacky:

I think its the opposite...

You see this new Lara Croft...I dont think she has that Hot factor at all.its more boyish...and maybe they did that on purpose..I think they are going to focus more on gameplay rather then on hot female lead with big breasts...

They will reboot it and perhaps make it more serious..I never liked Tomb Raider that much anyways...

Tomb Raider has been dead for years...since the godawful Angel of Darkness. Anniversary was a nice little reminder of just how brilliant the series was, but I lost all hope that Lara would get a new game that actually did her justice a long time ago. Coming from Square Enix, given their recent track record, if anything my despair grows deeper. I'll not be watching this with any keen interest...

I actually thought Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light was a good enough game. If anything, this over the top view approach is probably what Lara always needed. If they're going to go back to their initial game design of the series then they've got some serious competition (Uncharted).

What's the point? At first I though they were going to made the game themselves and it's gonna be Japanese Tomb Raider - basically not shit. All they did is just swapped one shitty american developer with another.

Tomb Raider Legend and Underworld were the best in the series yet, in my eyes...so I'm excited for another new direction. It's because there's actually a more plot-focused theme in the later games, with the puzzles filling the gaps.

I'm excited. Like, mega.

They love adding to the stack of work, don't they? They really can't just stick to something and get it done fast instead of MULTITASK galoring, making them take a million years longer than they should? Just get Versus out, geez. They'll still be making Agito and Versus until like 2015, and we'll never be able to see another numbered Final Fantasy until I'm on my deathbed.

Well, there's a chance that this will be good (and an equal chance that it'll be bad since we don't know anything about it), but am I the only one who's becoming wary about these series reboots? I know that people get attached to certain series, and we want it to keep going and to be good, but I'm afraid that the gaming industry will just be a series of reboots (if it hasn't become that already).

I guess it doesn't matter what series it's in as long as it's fun, but how far could they possibly stray from the original Tomb Raider with a reboot? They say, "Forget everything you know about Tomb Raider," but how different could it actually be?

Did she used to wear a skirt? I can't remember.. but hrm.. She's not bad looking, definitely a far cry from the Lara we grew up with. I'm intrigued.

SE is publishing the game, not developing it. The Square Enix teams in Japan will have little input in this compared to SE's western divisions. Crystal Dynamics will make it, just like how they made the previous few Tomb Raider games.

And a few details taken from NeoGAF via Scrawl.
The first details on Square Enix’s upcoming Tomb Raider reboot — announced earlier today — have made their way out of the latest issue of Game Informer. The game, still yet to be dated, stars a shipwrecked 21 year-old Lara Croft.

Tomb Raider is a reboot of the franchise, yes, but it’s also a reboot of the brand, the magazine reveals. It offers players a choice of path; Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher told the magazine: “You can literally go any direction that you see and carve your own way to the finish line instead of being guided.”

Lara will become a “hardened survivor,” says director Noah Hughes. She’ll pick up various talents, tools, and supplies as the player progresses through the game, opening new paths previously inaccessible due to Lara’s lack of skill or equipment.

And Lara sounds like she’s getting some skill system, too. The game will feature base camps where the player can combine and create items or upgrade Lara’s skill-set. These camps can also be used for fast travel, saving the player precious time and effort.

Survival isn’t all easy, though. Lara will have to stock up on food and water in order to survive. She’ll have to defend her life in other ways, too. I’m talking about firearms. Crystal Dynamics wouldn’t say much on what types of weapons we’ll see, but a piece of concept art in the magazine clearly reveals a pistol, shotgun, and bow. Lara will utilize weapons like these in the game’s new free-aim system, whereas the old games had a lock-on system. Crystal Dynamics says it can now compete with its competitors.

Failure to properly defend Lara results in brutal deaths. One death described in the preview sees a deranged man stabbing Lara in the chest, then closes her eyes as she lays dead. Another has a boulder crushing Lara’s leg and — trapped — is followed by another boulder crushing her head. Ouch!

Ohh I am so interested in this now. This is more like a horror story survival type of Tomb Raider. The way you have to stock up on food reminds me of Metal Gear Solid III Snake eater. As for the deaths I would say Ouch! indeed. I bet this will be the most violent and horrifying Tomb Raider yet. This has made me excited.

Which is what I'm hoping for. I understand that a big part of Lara's popularity is her "sexiness" factor, and honestly, her new design is still attractive and believable on top of that. I hope they proceed with this approach and I hope there's more to the character than just her appearance this time. The gaming world deserved better female leads. Lets make her one of them.

I wonder what other different outfits Lara Croft will get to wear. It will not be like Tomb Raider Legend where she will wear ripped dresses and stuff xD. But I am sure they will include a variety of different costumes just like legend and underworld. Legend had alot more I think :hmmm: Well considering shes in horror now I would like to see what kind of costumes she will get. Of course she is still attractive xD

ive loved Tomb Raider since i was like 8, although i was never able to beat them. lol. But i seriously cant wait for this, i love how there making it all fresh.

Well whaddya know :lew:

Crystal Dynamics on Tomb Raider reboot: “Lara Croft as a sex object isn’t our goal”

tomb-raider-2.jpg

May as well throw out the kitchen sink while you’re at it.

Crystal Dynamics’ art director Brian Horton has been talking about creating the new Lara Croft for Tomb Raider, where she isn’t going to be seen as a “sex object” as far as the studio is going.
“As far as sex appeal, we are always thinking about making a character that people want to play, and part of that is a level of attractiveness and being drawn to Lara,” Horton told Game Informer.
“But we don’t want to play up sexuality for sexualities sake. We are constantly talking about context and motivation on this project. If for any reason we wanted to put her in a situation that would be alluring, it isn’t to be alluring. It would be because the situation called for it.
“Lara is a lover of archeology and she has these book smarts. Her brains are another huge part of her sex appeal. She is an attractive girl who doesn’t play up her looks, but she is super smart and she is very ambitious.”
Horton added that Croft’s “toughness” will ultimately define who she really is
“Ultimately, what I think is going to be compelling about this – and what our version of sexy is – is the toughness through adverse conditions,” he said.
“Seeing her survive through these moments. Her skin is still bare on the arms and there are going to be rips and tears on her clothes, but it won’t be about being revealing. It’s a way of saying that through these tough situations, there is a beauty and vulnerability coming through. I think that is sexy in its own way.
“There is a different tone we are going for across the board, and Lara Croft as a sex object isn’t our goal.
“No unlockable bikinis.”
Tomb Raider was announced earlier this week with no date, but will release on PS3, 360 and PC.
