Square Enix has compared James Cameron's Avatar to its upcoming RPG Final Fantasy XIII.

Speaking to Tech Digest, Final Fantasy director Motomu Toriyama revealed suspicions that Cameron may have drawn inspiration from his title.

"The in-game universe this time around is quite fantasy based, but also futuristic at the same time. We never really had any particular reference points for Final Fantasy XIII, in terms of places where we drew inspiration from.

"That said, we're a little suspicious that the world famous Avatar movie might have take inspiration from us!"

Final Fantasy XIII is released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 on March 9.

Bollocks imo, Avatar is more closely representing Pocahontas than it is FF13, petty attempt at leeching popularity from another popular title (in this case a movie)

May as well compare Halo and FF13 because they both have guys in armour with guns :mokken:

She SO is, CONNECTIONS! :gasp:

But seriously, it's bizaare how they can compare the two, barring fantasy in sci fi elements I fail to see the similarities >_>

What makes SE think Cameron took from FFXIII?

Are there overly large smirfs in XIII?

I definitely think Avatar and Pocahontas are more closely connected. I was thinking this was a whole load of bollocks when I stumbled across it. If anything, I believe it was the other way round. James Cameron had been creating Avatar for years for heaven's sake ...

This does sound like a sad and pathetic attempt to get more popularity for the game by trying to say that it inspired Avatar. :hmmm:

If they really said that and meant it, and this hasn't been taken out of context, then that is quite rude really. Though Avatar might not have been everyone's cup of tea, a lot of work went into the world and it was very well designed and they'd put quite a lot of thought and effort into making it look good. It was meant to parallel Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves and other films of similar themes, but still the thought went into the world. To try and claim that Cameron took this from FFXIII is insane really and is quite a put down.

Anyhow, Avatar came out before FFXIII did, and was in development for quite a bit longer (I think), or at least before FFXIII details were released that he could have been inspired from.

James Cameron took his inspiration from Pocahontas and The Last Samurai. How can they claim he was inspired by FFXIII when he began work on it six years ago?

Just sounds like Motomu got a little too big for his britches and made quite an egotistical statement. :mokken:

Although, I will say that bold accusation was fucking bold. O_O

Probably because they're both more interested in money than art.

It does sound like he was being facetious. There was an exclamation mark after the quote, which is usually a sign that it's not serious.
Just say something vaguely controversial and people will talk about the game more. There's no such thing as bad publicity.

Lol at Damo with his Final Fantasy XIII comaprison with Halo xD. Ok but this does not make sense xD Avatar was a great movie but I dont think it was inspired by XIII tbh. Oh and Lightning is the MASTER CHEIF? WHAT XD /jk

I have to agree with Bjork and Jack's Smirking Revenge.

It's obviously a ploy to increase hype for the game by using an already over hyped film to help it along.

It probably isn't true either since I've heard that Cameron took years to write the script for Avatar. Which is pretty bad in itself seeing as it took him years to essentially write Pocahontas/Dancing With Wolves.

That's a bit of a ballsy statement. In actuality ideas for Avatar were planned shortly after Titanic around 1999. Cameron started ideas for Avatar but shelved the project for many years because he wasn't satisfied with the CGI 3D technology at the time. The only reason I would think to associate the game with such a successful movie would be to increase the hype.

To me a more believable statement would like "Final Fantasy XII was directly influenced by Star Wars." Now that's a statement I would believe.

Toriyama AGAIN? Why am I not surprised? This guy should not be allowed to work on games if whenever one of them is slightly criticized he goes into overly-defensive-make-up-a-load-of-bullshit-to-justify-the-criticism-mode.

We get the message. He likes FFXIII. He can shut up now. Its Final Fantasy. Its going to sell by the truckload, damn the reviews from critics. They're critics. Its their job to criticize games.

Oh please - he must be joking, right? If he isn't, I wouldn't be surprised. It's not the first time that a member of SE's staff has blurted out rather ridiculous things.

"That said, we're a little suspicious that the world famous Avatar movie might have take inspiration from us!"

But there's a major flaw in that, Toriyama! As everyone else have said here, Avatar took about a decade to make while FFXIII didn't even begin until about 4 or 5 years after Cameron put pen to paper.

If anything, it should be Cameron who should be suspicious that SE has borrowed elements from his own film - seeing as though SE is so keen to appeal to the western market lately (even announcing their interest in a 3D game recently).

The in-game universe this time around is quite fantasy based, but also futuristic at the same time.

Err...so are other fictional settings, not just Avatar. What kind of reason is this? In fact, why am I bothering with this? It's just another idiotic claim by SE. Damon has the right idea - let's make connections between the PSICOM and the Spartans now! Now I will connect the Moogles with the Ewoks.

Are you totally kidding me? SE is accusing Cameron of taking inspiration from them? Avatar is more like a mix of Pocahontas and reminds me of Ferngully (an old school animation movie I grew up to) than ANYTHING at all. o_o I'm sorry but are SE so up themselves that they actually think Cameron's inspiration came from their new video game? Please tell me that they're just joking around, because if not this is bullshit. That's one hell of an accusation to pin on somebody...Let's see some undeniable proof first. :ffs:

Final Fantasy XIII? No. Now I think it would have been more logical to say he was inspired by Final Fantasy X, I mean look at Khimari and the Avatar people..? Blue Cat like humans, I see THAT connection but XIII? Not so much 8(

Khimari VS Avatar

Seriously, thought that is one weird 'coincidence':brow:

Congrats SE with your fucked up statements again (y), the only comparison that both Final Fantasy XIII and Avatar have in common is how 50% of people love it and 50% hate it. Not really an underlining statement you want to be telling people. :ffs:
