Square Enix saw major drops in sales and earnings for the first six months of this year. In its second quarter earnings announcement, issued earlier today, sales were down to 68,056 million yen from the 90,561 million of the same period the year prior. Operating income fell more than half, from 13,091 million to 5,712 million yen.

Sales were below forecasts, the company said, but operating income outperformed forecasts due to continued success of previously released titles. The company actually issued revised forecasts earlier in the week outlining these points.

During an earnings briefing later in the day, Square Enix provided more specific sales data.

Over the six month period, the company sold 8.17 million pieces of software. The three major regions had nearly equal contributions: Japan with 2.84 million units, Europe with 2.71 million units and North America with 2.48 million units.

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2, released exclusively to Japan, was Square Enix's biggest seller for the period. Here's a list of top performing software, with regional sales splits:
  • Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2: 1.28 million (JPN)
  • Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days: 1.12 million (0.02 JPN, 0.39 NA, 0.71 EU)
  • Final Fantasy XIV: 0.63 million (0.19 JPN, 0.21 NA, 0.23 EU)
  • Just Cause 2: 0.56 million (0.05 JPN, 0.26 NA, 0.25 EU)
  • Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep: 0.51 million (0.01 JPN, 0.31 NA, 0.19 EU)
Including sales from FY 2010, Just Cause 2 has sold 1.48 million units total. Birth by sleep has sold total 1.27 million units.

The big topic of concern during the briefing was Final Fantasy XIV. For some of what was said, see this story.

This is bad, yus? :hmmm:

Does this mean SE will start actually tryin' on their games? xD

GOOD. You reap what you sow, and Square Enix have delivered us nothing but disappointments and half-arsed crap for the entire year. You can't rely solely on a reputation of producing good games in the past to sell your newer games which don't live up to expectations. Games should NOT sell just because they've got a famous label slapped on them and, as far as I'm concerned, they deserve this. If there was any justice, they'd be selling even less.

Hopefully this will teach them a lesson. But I doubt it...

FIRST ! , Scoop ! Fleur's first news item as MOD :monocle:

wait till I edit this post

Edit:
Never mind I was too late :gonk:

Well FF14 seems to be a huge disapointment and is not selling that well, even if it did sell quite a few in the beginning it wont be for long until a lot of people will stop subscribing and thus stopping their revenue.

FF13 is same thing, huge hype thus it sold extremely well until people realised how much it is lacking and thus not worth 60 bucks :O

Kane and Lynch had already bad reviews (I actually played it myself, DOg Days that is)
-extreme use of blood etc. = censored and its given a lame excuse as in why..
-weird controls and gameplay

Concept it awesome though and MP = damn original and interesting.
Again not worth 60 bucks....

Man they think we are rich or something./.....

Maybe instead of spending time on sequels, they'll actually work on an original idea. Please and thank you!

Meh, it'll pick up in 2011. There's too many hype-worthy titles coming out in '11 (KH Re:Coded, Dissidia Duodecim, Tactics Ogre, 3rd Birthday) that will pick up this year's slack. I hardly see S-E falling any time soon.

What about Dungeon Siege III which is supposed to be really great help Square Enix alot in term of what is being discussed here? Not only that but the 3rd birthday. Games that should not be games will bring SE down though.

i must admit a lot of the games this year was not very good, but there was some that i liked.. for example, ffxiii i enjoyed and kingdom hearts birth by sleep was great. but it's very sad when kingdom hearts is selling more copies than ffxiv, that's not good

but there are some games that i am already thinking "yh i want", 3rd birthday, dissidia 2 and the ffxiii secquls

Firstly, I highly doubt that Dungeon Siege III is a "really great help" purely because it's an Obsidian game that looks awfully like a rather ordinary kind of Western RPG. Somehow having Square Enix on its box won't make flock to buy it anymore than if it has another publisher.

And also the article talks about the first half of this year anyway, so there's little point asking about games that aren't even out. :wacky:

Oh snap, that must have been a downer for them. But they should have seen it coming, what with the types of games they've been producing lately and how the consumers found them disappointing, this has to be a sign that they NEED to try harder into making brand new games, not sequels and side-quests to their already released ones. They could have done better, but their actions have been quite unreasonable lately .

Well I guess you are right. I just thought it was going to be a good collaboration for SE. I agree with what you said about Square enix on the boxes not doing any good at all. Also yeah you got me there xD No point of it at all. I just went forward without noticing the games :lew: I expect next year to be much better.

:hmmm:

Well, I can't say I'm not surprised. Square has been doing poorly in how they presented their games, at least, in my opinion. FF13 was a good game, but the usuals we see in ff titles was not there(side quests, and airship). It surprised me to see that Birth By sleep was on the bottom of that list, tbh :gasp:; i would've thought that would have been on the top of the list.

To say the least, Square has been getting lazy, and they need to get their asses in gear. If they continue this for a few more years, then their pretty much gone :/. And i do not want that, not in the least ;-;.

But yeah, this is disappointing.
