Strago and learning his magic/skills

Hey everyone! A quick question... The character Strago (he's the old guy that learns his magic/skills from the various enemies in the game, I hope I have his name correct), is it worth the time to learn all the skills in the game? Is his learning enemy skills important? Or should I focus on improving the other characters in the game?

Strago has some great Lore magics but considering how powerful the other characters can be and the magic available to all of them he is hardly essential. I build him up for completion sake but you can easily finish the game without having any need of using Lore at all.
