Awakening the Origins of the Past with the Ashes of the Future

Mystical lights rained across the sky. Rocks that burned with a hot white light fell from the heavens; a cause and effect of a man made solar flare. A helpless city watched as their own doom fell upon them.

For years, man had been searching for an answer about life on other planets. To explore the universe and all its horizons was man’s second greatest dream. Shuttles and satellites lined the sky, but a positive reading could never be brought back. Finally, a team of scientists decided to try and use Mother Nature herself to try and read the starry skies. By impregnating an asteroid with their technology and guiding it towards the sun, a dormant and tame sunspot absorbed it, causing a cataclysmic solar flare.

As the shock waves of heat swam through the stars, many planets overheated and fried instantaneously. They had hoped to use this reaction with their radiation to read the universe with electronic drenched heat waves.

The result was far greater than they’d hoped for.

A disrupted asteroid belt melded and began colliding with nearby planets. Earth was no exception.

A beautiful and deadly light show took place one night as asteroid fragments began crashing into the Earth. City skylines were destroyed instantly; thousands of people slaughtered by horrific nature. Citizens scattered like ants on a hill, trying desperately to flee in any which way but there was no escaping the inevitability. Or was there?

The same team who was responsible for bringing this act of nature on the planet had an answer. Those chosen with devices around their wrists were secluded in cryogenic slumber, often somehow related to one on the scientific team. Less than a lucky hundred of people were sealed away, their lives frozen in time until they would awaken. When? Who knows. By who? Whoever discovered them. What would they awaken to? Hopefully a new world. Their fate was no longer in their own hands.

---

Now, 400 years into the future and the world is a desolate place. All that remains of the past are the ashes it left behind. The remnants of a few cityscapes lay scattered among the plains. The forests have taken over most of the planet, thriving in a world where mankind can’t tear it down.

After the collision with the meteor shower, sun infused rock began to react with the Earth. The forests grew to enormous strength, covering nearly 70% of the planet. Nobody dared to go into the forests anymore. Stories and legends told of large creatures which stalked in the trees, thriving in the comfort and shelter of the trees, never set a foot outside their boundaries. Nobody knew what these creatures were; nobody dared to enter the forest alone.

The few remaining survivors of humanity have banded together, forming small rural colonies that were few and far between. They had all the natural resources at their fingertips, but had to start civilizations from scratch.

Now as a few curious wanderers stumble upon one of the ruins which holds some of the last remaining cryogenic tanks, they’ll discover how easy their lives have been. And those who are awakening... they’ll either have to learn to adapt to a new world, or find a way to bring back their past.

---

So here’s how the main story’s going down... depending on how many I can get to join, they’ll be divided in two groups... some will be awakening from the past, and some will be a part of the group who are discovering them. The choice is yours, but it needs to be fairly even.

The main storyline is going to go as the small group awakening, learning to try and live in this new world but grow tired of it. They’ll have their Nikels, portable communication devices from the past which will play a larger part in the RP later on. It’s the last remaining tie they have to their past, as well as to each other. They’ll want to find a way to bring back the glory of the civilized nature of the past; hopefully the RP will last long enough to make it that far.

Same RP Rules apply here as they do anywhere else. No Godmodding, no powerplaying, don't speed post, and please PLEASE put some thought and effort into your posts. Take your time even, I'd like to see a bare minimum of 3 paragraphs per post as this is mainly a story driven RP.

RP Template is pretty much standard. There’s no magic, no huge fighting, it’s more a story driven RP than anything. It may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but who knows. I don’t really want more than 3 or 4 people awakening, and I’ll have myself an NPC to help guide the others who will be exploring the area where they awaken, just to get it started. They can’t really.. spontaneously awaken.

History: Past/Present Dweller:

Thus far, myself, Martel and Ami have reserved Awakeners. Depending on the character bio, I'll accept up to 2 others, possibly more depending on the overall turn out.

Name:
Marin Shultz

Age: 19

Gender: Female

Appearance:
Marin has bright blue eyes and lengthy blonde hair. With so much volume to it, her hair nearly takes up a third of her frame. With thin pink lips they accentuate her otherwise pale face, framed with high pronounced cheekbones. She’s petite in size, coming to a short 5 feet 2 inches for her age. She has a wiry build, not exactly scrawny but she isn’t very muscular either.

She awakens in the clothes she was put to sleep in, a long white short-sleeved shirt and blue denim shorts.

Personality: Marin was a very bubbly girl in the past. She had many friends, though only few were very dear to her. When she awakens in the future, she learns that none of them had survived. She was given a gift to live on, but at the cost of loneliness. The other remaining survivors she didn’t recognize and this took a toll on her attitude.

She found it hard to develop and trust in the new world. Often coming to depend on the others of her kind, she felt at a loss of independence. She found there were few times that she wanted to be alone anymore, often tagging along with the others even if there wasn’t any purpose of her being there. The loneliness was palpable.

History: Survivor of the Past: Marin’s father was a part of the team who had thrust their dreams into the universe, and therefore she felt in part responsible for what had happened. She had an otherwise normal life, however her father was never really around, nor had much time for her. This gave her an opportunity to grow as an individual. As a child of divorce (her mother left them when she found that science took first priority), Marin developed a trait to befriend others easily. She had to.

Marin went to school as one of the most charming and vivacious children they ever had. She never left anyone out; always quick to have a warm heart in group efforts. There were a few friends she held especially dear, and as time grew on she spent more and more time with them, as her father spent more and more time with his research.

By the time she was 17 she’d had her first infatuation. A summer fling that didn’t last long (as summer flings never do) she felt her first pang of heartbreak. Curious by this feeling that not even the absence of her mother had instilled in her, she sought to cover it up. Shortly after that, she realized the joy that having a boyfriend gave her, and became a serial monogamist. Even if a relationship lasted a few weeks or months, she was hardly ever seen without a boyfriend from then on.

On the day that the world was coming to an end, her father had called her to his labs. He realized the error of his ways and had to atone for what he had done, dying with the world as a sailor sinks with his ship. However he wanted his daughter to have a bright future and to see another day. Giving her Nikel specific capabilities and tweaks, he sealed her away in cryogenic slumber against her wishes. If she was to die, she wanted to die with the rest of the world and the ones she loved. She had high hopes that maybe she would see them on the other side; however it was by pure privilege that she was able to be saved.

Interesting.... I might join

Can i ask, at what tier tech are we back at? Are we kinda tribalish? or did we retain enough knowledge to survive kinda like will smith in i am legend?

Ahh, thank you I should have explained that better. It started off tribalish at least but at the point the RP is at, people will have knowledge of the world around them. The people themselves are by no means primitive, but having to start from scratch is. So I suppose you could look at it as the I am Legend example where they've taken what means of the ruins and tried to make do with what they had.

I’m interested too, but I’d like to know more about the survivors’ culture. Are they religious? What is their social structure like? Is the leader of the tribe the supreme leader or is there some kind of democracy? Are the colonies hostile towards each other? Are their names conventional or more exotic sounding?

alrite. When i have time... ill see if i can scrounge up something. No promise though

Wow. Way to call me out on that man, I hadn't thought of any of those. I'll definitely provide a secondary indepth look at it, answering those questions.. tomorrow.. as it is 5:30am right now >.<

Name: Angelo Cross

Age: 16

Gender: Male

Appearance:

zero_kiryu_cosplay_by_aleja_chan.jpg

Personality: Angelo is an easily excited teenager, who will often mess things up accidentally by rushing them. he has few friends, even fewer that are dear to him. He is a friendly and loyal person but his cockiness and sarcasm often ruin it for him.

He found it hard to believe that anyone had lived in a world prior to the accident, having grown up there all his life. Often coming to the ruins of the old world to scavenge but more often it was for the silence it felt peaceful, tranquil, maybe even safe.

History: New World Child: Angelo’s father was a part of the team who had excavated the ruins and lead to the discovery of the cryo-tubes, and therefore he felt in part responsible for the old worlders awakening in this harsh and uncomfortable situation. He leads a normal life, or at least as normal as the new world allows, How many kids can say they found a gun and was allowed to keep it? no it doesnt have bullets but how many people would check? This gave him an advantage over others around him. As he had a weapon the others would think twice before trying to steal off him.

Since the cataclysm was a global event couldn't there be cultural variations for different parts of the planet? People reacting differently? Very different cultures emerging, some tribal and primitive, and some that are like scavengers? Some that worship new gods that they have created, and some that remember more about the past, read remnants of old books, and form their culture around them?

I'd be interested to join as a survivor.

Interesting.

I'll have a character bio up in this same post in a bit. She'll be with those waking up from cyrogenic sleep.

And I almost forgot to ask a really crucial question.

I was planning to make my character an Asian -- Korean, to be precise. I'm hoping multi-racialism in this role play is acceptable? I'm pretty sure some cultural diversity should make for a fairly interesting plot detail...

But, it's your call.

I'll just continue on and put up the character bio for some checking, and approval... And will make changes if need be.

EDIT:

I just had to put a Korean character, since I have now accumulated quite an experience watching Korean soap operas in the hospital ward, lol.

Kim Aik Ri Shannon

Age:

17

Gender:

Female

Appearance:

http://haikucouture.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/jacket11.jpg?w=305&h=553

Was last dressed in casual wear before she was placed into cryogenic sleep; Shannon wears a long blazer over a simple short-sleeved shirt matched with a pair of grey shorts. (Ignore the earrings)
She stands at a fairly typical height of about 168cm, and is considerably light (How light exactly is hard to say, especially for someone who just woke up from a coma of sorts).

Personality:

In school, she is the typical nerd, always buried behind a pile of books, and reading all day long. She does have her own clique, but she does not socialise anywhere beyond this circle of friends. It was only when she found her crush that she became determined to change.

A rather cliché love story ensues as she changes herself to make herself more desirable – taking more notice of her appearance, as well as to become more friendly. Her efforts did pay off briefly, as her crush began to be interested in her.

Those were the happy times, and it was in those times that she became less of a nerd, and more of the social butterfly.

History: Past Dweller:

She was a model student, often coming out top in class, and often studying, revising, and never leaving her house unless it was absolutely necessary. Her parents were concerned, and tried to force her to go for blind dates. Half the time she side-tracked and ended up in libraries, or bored her date to death with discussions about her favourite books.

It was only at the age of 17 that she found herself falling in love with a particular boy in class. She hadn’t taken much notice of him initially, until he topped the class once. He was handsome and typically perfect in every way – to her at least.

That itself was enough to compel her into a complete makeover. She desired to be less of a social retard and more of a desirable girlfriend. With the help of her closest friends, she accomplished this transformation. The caterpillar has become a butterfly.

She got her love, and they were a happy couple.

… The En-…

*Ahem*
Well, unfortunately (>.<) one fine day, as she walked out on the streets, she just had to have the fortune of stepping onto the road just as a speeding car came along. It swerved around a curve so suddenly in a typical drift – so quick that she only heard the sound of the car coming at her, and had only enough time to see the car already right beside her.

It was too late for anything, well, except being a rag doll, as she feels her limbs smashing against the windscreen, shattering the glass, then the hood, then flying off to hit the ground. All went black soon enough, and never quite returned to white… Until her cryogenic sleep ended.
…

As it turned out, after her accident, she was in a coma. Even as the cataclysm occurred, she was still in her comatose state.

Her parents, who were scientists that worked with the team, decided that they had to do whatever it takes to save their daughter, quietly gave her a Nikel, as well as a letter, and left her in cryogenic sleep.

Name: James Gore

Age: 18

Gender: Male

Appearance: Slightly under average at five foot eight with an average weight, James has short, permanently tousled hair, colored a deep enough red to make him stand out from the average redhead. A slightly pale complexion stands in stark contrast to this hair color.

With a round face that makes him look rather open and innocent in appearance, James can often be mistaken for younger than he is. Slightly narrowed green eyes, a small nose, and thin lips complete his facial arrangement.

With a preference for casual attire, James wears a short sleeved white t-shirt with tears in the stomach and shoulders from wear and tear, along with equally torn blue jeans and scuffed white sneakers. It makes him look rather casual and scruffy.

Personality: Enigmatic and something of an oddity, James takes odd habits that most other people don't really find normal. He has a certain amount of obsessive compulsive disorder in regards to numbers, and if there isn't an even number of whatever he's working with, he becomes a little weird and moody. This is one of many weird things about him.

That aside, he's your typical teenage guy, with an exuberance and enthusiasm to match his appearance. He often shoves himself into things he has no business getting involved in and will often come out with a bruised ego or a black eye for his troubles.

He is slightly more emotional than your average guy, being a little too empathic for his own good. If he sees someone going through a hard time, chances are he'll get involved and get stuck in, regardless as to whether or not he is wanted.

A social animal, he cannot survive long on his own, getting bored, fidgety and jumpy when there's nobody around for him to unload his boundless energy upon.

History: Past Dweller: A good student, if a little lazy, James quickly made himself a select group of friends due to his downright odd personality, and the others either ignored or excluded him outright, as kids do when they see something alien to them.

He grew up rather happy despite the occasional bullying that came from his oddities. He got rather good grades in school, and never really engaged in any romances. The concept was alien to him, and he simply didn't see a girl liking him. This wasn't so much lack of confidence as lack of effort on his part.

Upon the end of the world, his parents tried to pull some strings with his mother's brother, a researcher, and he managed to get James a place with Nikel technology and cryogenic slumber. Not quite sure what was happening, James obeyed his parents' frantic pleas and was frozen in time.

I'd be interested to join as a survivor.

Ohoho you're on to something there son. I'll be trying to get as extensive about what happened, and what happened after in the intro post but you're right. Some parts of the world would be essentially just wiped out, whereas others managed to come about with their wits in tact.

There will be new Gods surfacing, Dryads who live in the forest to protect the planet, and worldwide people will have an understanding relationship with the Dryads. There's one who is essentially the Mother of the Earth, Queen of the Forest sort of thing who'll witness them awakening and almost have something to do with it. The survivors will have a conflicting relationship with the forest as the key to bringing back the past will be hidden in a cavern beneath the forest somewhere close to where they woke up. In the end it'll come about that they have to destroy the forest/what's keeping the planet living, to return the past back to how it was.

Diar and newcomer whom I've never interacted with before, your Bios are Approved. If at all possible I'd like to see a bit more padding in the history part. They're small bio templates so I'd like to see more thought drawn out into these characters.

Himeno I Cannot Accept that bio, it's not what I'm looking for for this RP.

Also, if people wanted to build off of secondary characters for Survivors and wanted to ditch them later, they could. Or they could use both, I'm good with that also.
