Taiwan teen 'chops off father's hands'

A Taiwanese teenager has been arrested after chopping off his father's hands, allegedly to avenge years of physical abuse.

The victim — identified only by his surname Fan — was in critical condition at a hospital in central Taiwan's Miaoli county after his son hacked at his wrists more than ten times while he slept, the Apple Daily said.

The 17-year-old showed no remorse, saying he could not care less if his father survived the attack.

"I don't feel a thing if he's going to die, it's like killing a chicken or a duck ... I wanted to take him out two years ago," he was quoted by the paper as saying.

According to the report, 37-year-old Fan, who was divorced, regularly yelled at his son and beat him.

I came across this tonight on ninemsn news and I was rather shocked!

I've never heard anything quite like it before. Usually they just kill whomever they're getting abused from but this guy obviously wanted his father to suffer longer.

I can see both point of views in this case. I feel sorry for the kid being abused but I also believe in 'Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right.'

Now he's gone and ruined his own life by stooping as low as his father. =/

What are your opinions on this?

This proves that revenge is not sweet. I mean I get how he is feeling after he's been neglected by his dad and all but he should't go as far as this. He could die and now he's arrested.

I agree with you Kandy on how he's now as low as his father and he could've just told somebody else to sort it out for him, not to use violence as his resort.

That's a little extreme for a kid to be emotionless enough to do this. I mean abuse often times is never reported to the authorities out of fear something will happen to them, so I assume he kept this secret inside the family. I can never justify murder, I don't care if the kid was molested as well, I just can't justify it. Sounds like the kid has mental issues anyway. He might be better off in the mental asylum then out in public. The father deserves to be locked away as well, but first there needs to be some sort of proof, like bruising or tape recorder.. or you know.

Well all that is said and gone now, the dad will probably walk away from it all just fine and the boy will be locked away for a longggg time.

I wrote my thesis on social behavioural problems (focusing on but not limited to youth) in Japan, and actually you'd be surprised how much bizarre cases like this come up in Asia. Obviously, I know the most about Japan specifically... But although off-the-wall crimes happen all over the world, it does somehow feel as though the occurrences are more frequent over here.

I researched and wrote about many cases similar to this. There is a whole school of thought related to whether or not social recluses in this country are inherently dangerous - there certainly have been many popularised cases where socially reclusive sons and daughters have attacked family members in often permanently damaging ways.

This just reminds me of how I saw two or three very similar cases within the same week or so a few years back where a mother had slashed the palms of her child's hands with scissor blades over some minor transgression. It seemed so weird to me that within a week there had been three scissor-related domestic crimes in the same country.

I guess I feel a little jaded towards hearing about this kind of stuff by now. I read so much about it for research that my brain automatically goes into research and analysis mode whenever I hear yet another case. It's still horrific though, of course.

This remidns me of something i read while looking up an anime, (can't remember the name, but a boy rolls around on skates and carries a bend bat) Anyways, i read that it was based off of the "metal bat murders" that apparently hapened in japan. I guess there were a series of children who would beat their parents to death with bats. I haven't been able to find absolutly anything on it though.

BoT. Cutting his dad's hands off is a little extreme. Though i can see why he did it. Does the mean justify the end? Not really. I'm sure he feels a sense of releife though, no that his dad can't abuse anyone again. Not really surpriseing though.

For some reason I wasnt shocked when I read that. Not much can shock me nowadays with violence, you hear and see it all the time. There are people out there who dont show any remorse for their actions. That is disturbing, but again there people like that out there.
