I own two copies of Final Fantasy IX and both of do not work. In both copies I can play all the way until the first battle scene and the game freezes. The music will still play but the screen is frozen and I cannot put in any commands. This problem happens on both the psx and ps3. Both copies are the four-disk original psx version. Please help me with this problem if there is any answer to it.

Are there any major scratches on the disc? That would definitely effect its playability.

Go to a games store and get it cleaned. It might fix the problem. Did you recently buy it? You could ask the previous owner for an explanation.

As for going to the store, I have a 'old do it yourself' disk cleaning get from the mid 90's that still works. Both copies of the game are of the black-backed variety, are those even safe to clean?

I think it should be fine. Give it a good wipe over and see what happens.

also try cleaning it.. and trying another system

I just tried cleaning the worse out of the two disks and, believe it or not, it actually worked! I was dumbfounded! All this time all I had to do was clean it! Thanks for giving me the advice, now i'm off to enjoy what I hope to be a great game!
