Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us announced at VGAs

The bomb has been dropped big time: The Last of Us has been announced at the Spike VGAs for PS3, coming as a brand new IP from Naughty Dog.

thelastofusnew.jpg

The trailer showed a man and a young woman, who looked a lot like Ellen Page, fending off what appeared to be ant-like zombies of some sort before running out to a environment of a metro city and jungle that had a big I Am Legend vibe
No date was given, however.
Last of Us is a “survival and action elements to tell a character driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague,” headlined by a duo known as Joel and Ellie – the Page-looking gal – as they go through the US.
“We are excited to finally unveil The Last of Us, a project the team has been working hard on for some time,” said Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells.

“Naughty Dog’s mission is to change the way people experience videogames. We are confident The Last of Us will take a leap forward in cinematic gaming and storytelling, providing gamers with an experience unlike anything else in the industry.”
The announcement of the new project, being headed by studio game director Bruce Stanley and Uncharted 2 director Neil Druckmann, shows the team now has two teams operating at once. It’s been focussing on Uncharted since its inception in 2007, so this is a big ultra-shocker.
It’s also the first time the studio has introduced a second new IP in the same hardware generation. Trailer and first screens is below.

Ellen Page not involved with The Last of Us, Enslaved design lead on board

That does look a lot like Ellen Page in The Last of Us. Safe to assume she’ll be voicing the female character? No.
the-last-of-us.jpg

It was speculated by Naughty Dog fans following the game’s unveil at the VGAs over the weekend that the Inception and Juno actress would be involved.
But studio creative lead Neil Druckmann tweeted last night the roles of both main character in the game, Ellie and Joel, would be played by Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker.
Johnson is a relative unknown in gaming, but Baker VO’ed as Snow in Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, Vincent in Catherine, Two-Face in Arkham City and Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite.
Its also been revealed that former lead designer on Enslaved, Mark Richard Davies, is working on the project. That may explain why the trailer came with a dash of Ninja Theory’s effort.
The Last of Us remains dateless for PS3.

A few new bits on Naughty Dog’s newly-announced PlayStation 3 title The Last of Us have come out by way of the Twitter-verse.
The game has been in development for two years, according to Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann. The unbelievable bit of this announcement, according to Geoff Keighley, is that Naughty Dog had a second full team working in secret on The Last of Us. This was also confirmed by Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra.
Mark Richard Davies, who was lead designer on Ninja Theory’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, is working on the new IP. It is unknown if he’s lead designer, however.
The two lead characters, Joel and Ellie, are played by Troy Baker (Booker in BioShock Infinite, Snow in Final Fantasy XIII, Vincent in Catherine, Yuri in Tales of Vesperia) and Ashley Johnson (Gwen in Ben 10, Terra in Teen Titans), respectively. Johnson is doing mo-cap for her character, as well.
The trailer itself was rendered in in-engine on PlayStation 3 hardware, according to Christophe Balestra. Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells also tweeted about this.
Finally, there is “no network play,” according to the official UK PlayStation website.

Report: The Last of Us aiming for late 2012-early 2013

Naughty Dog is aiming to have The Last of Us out by last 2012 or early 2013, a USA Today report has said, while its also been confirmed who will compose the game’s score.
thelastofusbeard.jpg

The USAT article says the title, unveiled at the VGAs, will be based from the same third-person perspective that Uncharted came from, with Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra telling the publication it was “trying to move the medium of video games into an area elevated in the same manner of respect” that films have done.
“We want to redefine what our medium is even called. ‘Video game’ is not an accurate name anymore. It is not necessarily a game with rules and a winner and a loser. It’s an experience.”
Creative director Neil Druckmann said the idea of The Last of Us came about after watching BBC nature documentary Planet Earth, in which it showed how the cordyceps fungus infected ants, resulting in taking over its brain and producing growths from its head.
Hence, the clip of it being used in a teaser before the reveal.
As soon as game director Bruce Straley seen it, he admitted: “We instantly thought ‘humans’.”
On creating the second team for the game, ND co-president Evan Wells added if it didn’t “expand the roles for people, we could potentially lose them, because they really wanted to be challenged. We didn’t want to lose that talent.”
After Uncharted 2 shipped in 2009, some of the dev team from that moved over, while everyone else worked on Uncharted 3.
Oscar-winning Santaolalla to compose score
Naughty Dog’s also confirmed via a presentation to press in the US overnight (via Eurogamer) that Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla will score the soundtrack.
Santolalla scored Brokeback Mountain and the incredible Babel. Part of his work can be hard towards the end of the unveil trailer.
“He’s awesome,” said Druckmann. “He picks and chooses what he works on; he could work on all these big movies. We brought him in here, showed him the game, walked him through the whole story and what we’re trying to do, and he said ‘I want to be a part of this’.”
He added the focus on the game won’t be on the monsters, but rather “the relationship between Joel and Ellie,” the lead characters for the game.

The Last of Us trailer pulled for copyright infringement

Viacom appears to have gone on some sort of YouTube copyright infringement rampage, with the result that a huge number of videos related to the VGAs have been pulled. One of these is the official trailer for The Last of Us, hosted on the game’s own YouTube channel, resulting in a copyright infringement notice smack in the middle of its own website. Whoops. Sony told Kotaku it hopes to have the matter resolved shortly.

Stunning Last of Us concept art appears online

AllGamesBetayup, it’s back – has gone live with what seems to be three pieces of some amazing concept art taken from The Last of Us. The first shows main duo Joel and Ellie travelling on the outskirts of a city – we’re going to guess San Francisco – with the second showing the pair laughing around a campfire. The third piece of art shows them hiding from potential foes. Get the art below the break.

I am definitely into this because not only is it by Naughty Dog (pretty much a no-brainer for quality), but I've really been waiting for a really story driven "zombie" apocalypse game. Games like Dead Rising and Resident Evil just really don't reach the full potential a zombie story could reach. The best example I can give is The Walking Dead, and that's a TV series.

I can't wait to play this but unfortunately my dreams were shattered when I found out Naughty Dog simply pre-rendered their cutscenes using their game engine and the power of at least half a dozen PS3s... So all we get to watch is videos playing back on our PS3 systems for the apparently "in-game" cutscenes. It's a shame people keep getting misinformed by "Captured directly from a PS3" and confusing it with "Rendered in real-time on a PS3".

The trailer looks good.

The question for me is does it make sense.

Will they have a valid sounding explanation for the event.
So far we have yet to hear one in The Walking Dead.

If the characters are going to spend all their time running from zombies, or whatever they are called that doesn't make sense to me either. In an event like this you would find a defensible position to make a base, hold up there and only venture out for food and other supplies.
Maybe they have a place like that. One would hope so.

People on other forums are saying they're tired of fps zombie type games.
Maybe being told in the 3rd person perspective will make a difference for them.We shall see.

I prefer rpgs.If there are some rpg/adventure type elements in it I might be interested.:megusta2:

Zombies are cliché in general, but this new concept is welcomed by me. I am tired about the virus nonsense. Bring it on Fungi!

I agree finding a defensible position to make a base and only venture out for supplies and food. However what if their base gets comprimised over and over?

Or perhaps they already have a solid base. Dont think they have tbh. Ellie said they are constantly on the run. So you make solid points.

This game will be very story-driven so its not just another zombie game.

You see Ellie collecting bullets in the trailer so I hope like you it will be a rpg type of game. Im sure it will be adventure like UC, but collecting stuff and supplies etc. would be epic man.

A game where you better run than fight and keep an close eye on your supplies. Finding stuff and exploring new areas. Hope it will be like that. One epic journey. I want it to be really realistic. Hunt for your food etc.

We'll see. Ofcourse keep this thread updated with news if you find it. :D

I can see this being in direct competition with the 2012 Tomb Raider title now more than ever, with this emphasis on survival - only with more infected zombie-like people and less untamed wild animals to tackle. :wacky:

I'm not really into these sort of games, but seeing Naughty Dog behind the wheel and their approach to it is more than enough to put this on my radar. In terms of originality, they have little, but always find a way of weaving familiar elements together to form a really good quality result. I still do want to fully see though what this game can do to distinguish itself clearly from other titles of this similar scenario and genre.

The Last of us is probably going to be one of my most anticipated games to come, simply because it is Naughty Dog, and the UC games never fail to impress. :lew: Oh, and I am curious on how ND wants to surpass any story with this one. UC has a great story, but it does not mean that storytelling is really poor for every other game. :hmmm: It is going to be third person like UC, and I am sure some climbing will be involved, and clues on survival. From what I am reading, Joel and Ellie are going to have a very important friendship.

The Last of Us steers clear of cliches
Uncharted similarity a struggle, at first.
by Sal Romano [@salromano] at 12:08 PM EST, January 15, 2012 .

TLoU-OPMB-400x225.jpg

The latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine Benelux shares new details on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us.
Why use these “zombie” creatures? According to Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann, it’s because no other zombie game has done it right. They feel like B-grade movies created for superficial pleasure, he said. In The Last of Us, the focus is on Joel and Ellie, and their mutual relationship. He cites 28 Days Later and The Walking Dead as movie examples.
Asked if that meant it was like Heavy Rain, Druckmann said it’s not a great comparison. “David Cage meant right, but approached things wrong,” he said. In The Last of Us, the player is given much more freedom and strategic choices. Heavy Rain was too caught up in quick-time events, he said.
The debut trailer – seen here – shows Joel and Ellie confronted by one of the zombie creatures. At one point, you see the two count the footsteps of the coming creatures, in attempt to figure out how many there are, which may indicate sound being an important factor in The Last of Us. Joel cocks the gun’s trigger, hoping their ears pay no mind. He is no superhero, and is just as frigtened as Ellie in these situations. When the creature goes for him, he tries holding it back by grabbing its neck, as they’re highly infectious.
The trailer, according to Druckmann, explains a lot involving gameplay. You’ll alternate between shooting and melee combat, and ammo comes in short supply. So don’t expect Uncharted-grade shotouts. You’ll run into situations where you’ll have to help others, but nothing obvious. “I hate games where you have to brainlessly defend a NPC,” he said.
Exploration is a prime factor, as well, but risks are involved. You may walk into a cafe only to be confronted. That said, the game isn’t as linear as Uncharted, but as it’s still story-driven, don’t expect an open-world, either.
Uncharted is the team’s biggest worry. While it’s their prize and trophy, it’s also the game they worry everyone will compare The Last of Us with. Which is why they want both games to be different, and aim to steer clear of post-apocalyptic cliches. But that was harder than they thought it’d be. The first version of the game looked so much like Uncharted that it was scrapped, only to start again from scratch. In the new version, they used new lighting and rending, and rougher camerawork, as if filmed with a handy cam.
Enemies in the game are still as quick as Uncharted‘s. A fungus called cordyceps has taken over the mind and bodies of those infected, and is highly contagious, which is why Joel and Ellie must immediately run after shooting one (like in the trailer). And also because they’d rather more creatures not hear and be lured.
Thanks, Foxdies.

Quick quotes: The Last of Us “trying to say something about human beings and how they exist”

“We’re trying to say something about human beings and how they exist. Now necessarily just in this setting, but in every setting. We try so hard at Naughty Dog to push things and then games come out that are fun and exciting and get visceral things right, but to read in reviews that they have an amazing story is disheartening to us because we work so hard at it. We really hope we can raise the bar.” – Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann, speaking in the latest issue of Edge.
New IP The Last of Us is expected to launch next year for PS3.

Let's see...

Naughty Dog, zombies (or zombie-like creatures), apocalypse, surviving, character driven (like The Walking Dead), the title itself... Do Want!

Seriously though, I love what they've done with the Uncharted series as far as quality goes. I believe they'll treat this one the same way.

The Last of Us setting inspired by “ruin porn”

The city seen in The Last of Us is noticeably dilapidated, which may seem a little unrealistic given that only twenty years have passed since the apocalyptic event which broke down society, but Naughty Dog explained that the highly deteriorated environments are based on research into what would actually happen.

I'm kinda interested in this game even though it doesn't look to be my thing :O

here's some news on the storyline (Sorry if this has been posted in here before) It doesn't have any spoilers but I guess don't read it if you want to keep the story a secret.

http://au.ps3.ign.com/articles/121/1218234p1.html

Ever since The Last of Us was revealed this past December, gamers have been flooded with questions. As a PlayStation 3-exclusive title from the Sony-owned studio Naughty Dog, expectations are exceptionally high. And like Naughty Dog's famous Uncharted series, The Last of Us seems to be character and plot-driven.

We've met the game's main characters, we know that a virus has mutated most of the world's population and destroyed the world as we know it, and we know that the game takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting. But now, thanks to a video posted on Game Informer, we have more detail than ever about the game's plot, how things begin, and what the situation is for both Joel and Ellie as your adventure unfolds.

"The story takes place 20 years after this apocalyptic event happens," Creative Director Neil Druckmann explains. He goes on to talk about what we already know and what we've already figured out; society is breaking down as a result of a deadly virus. Though the government is falling apart, the military has created quarantine zones that act as sparse safe havens for uninfected survivors. Druckmann goes on to note that even the quarantine zones begin to fall apart over time, however, as supplies run low, people start losing their minds, and the infected start infiltrating them, whether intentionally or otherwise.

the-last-of-us-20120208113312946.jpg

"Our story picks up in one of the last remaining quarantine zones," Druckmann goes on. Martial law rules the day, and any infraction -- even minor ones -- result in immediate execution. The quarantined city the game begins in is split up into various, heavily-guarded sections, and scanning for the infected happens constantly. "If you scan positive for infection," he notes, "you're taken off to the side and euthanized."

Joel is then touched upon by Naughty Dog. Described as being in his 40's, Joel knows what the world looked like before it was devastated. Over time, he's begun to become less bound by morality and more bound by doing whatever's necessary to survive. "What he wouldn't do in the past is almost a daily occurrence at this point," Bruce Straley, the game's director, notes.

A "black market" within the quarantine zone is what Joel calls home. And while there, he's tasked with a job. While he usually deals in "contraband," such as illicit drugs, illegal weapons and more, this job requires him to "smuggle" a young girl out of the city. That young girl is Ellie, who we were first introduced to when the game was revealed for the first time with that beautiful trailer. Why is she being smuggled out? "That's something we're not ready to talk about," Druckmann admits.

the-last-of-us-20120208113312634.jpg

"All she knows is this one quarantine zone." That's a scary thought, but it's Ellie's reality. Having been born years after the devastation begins, she has no idea what the real world was like. She lives in a military-run orphanage within the confines of the quarantine zone, and has great interest in media from before the fall, such as comic books and music. The producers allude to the fact that the trouble she often gets into at the orphanage hastens the need for her to leave the city.

The thing is, when he and Ellie leave the city, things go badly. Joel is caught with Ellie outside of the city, and worse yet, it seems he'll be unable to return, as he's now wanted by the military. Having made a solemn oath to a friend within the city that he'd look after and protect Ellie, the two move on outside of the city as a team. Joel knows someone outside of the confines of the quarantine zone and looks initially to unload Ellie so he can move on alone.

"Being a Naughty Dog story," Druckmann teases, "things aren't always what they seem."

The Last of Us screens show human enemies, evironments

Shots from Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us have surfaced over on AGB. We’re assuming since Game Informer has month-long coverage of the game, the shots came from the outlet. It’s hard to know, considering AGB doesn’t list the source, and the shots are without a watermark. But they are posted below anyway. If they are actual scans, which is how we’re leaning, we’ll remove the shots if asked and just leave the link. The Last of Us will be released sometime in late 2012 or early 2013 on PS3.

The Last of Us – The Latest Info in One Place

+ Posted by Arne Meyer // Community Strategist, Naughty Dog

Like The Last of Us

February has been a month flush with new information about The Last of Us trickling out from a variety of websites, magazines and more that have visited the Naughty Dog studio over the past three months. One of the more in-depth looks at The Last of Us came from the US publication Game Informer, who put together a cover story hub for all the OTHER information they managed to squeeze out of us from a very, very short visit.
The most important part of their visit, to me, was that we were able to show a well-polished, nearly fifteen minute game demo of The Last of Us. The gameplay demo starts with Joel and Ellie driving down a highway congested with abandoned vehicles, eventually encountering another survivor who looks hurt and is limping towards their pickup truck. Surprisingly, Joel hits the accelerator and just before he barrels into the survivor, he pulls out a gun and shoots at Joel – missing Joel and only breaking the windshield. With this immediate threat behind them, Joel doesn’t have time to react as another survivor in the group rolls a bus downhill towards Joel and Ellie, broad siding them and sending the truck careening into a long-abandoned convenience store.

This is where the gameplay begins – a very tense, deliberate overview of the unique AI for The Last of Us, how the balance of power between weapons creates an atmosphere of extreme tension in combat, exploring the environment and scavenging, and the relationship between Joel and Ellie – both in-combat and out of combat.
Joel and Ellie are immediately besieged by the group of survivors, leading to a brutal melee sequence with Joel before other survivors reveal that they have a gun and start shooting at Joel. This tips the balance of power until Joel can draw his own gun and then both sides are taking cover and moving around to try to get a good shot off. When Joel’s pistol clicks, revealing he has no ammunition, the remaining survivor thinks he’s got the upper hand and moves much more aggressively since he still has a gun with ammo. Just when he thinks he’s got Joel, Ellie whips a brick at him, stunning him long enough for Joel to take him out via melee attacks.

But this was only the first wave of this group of survivors after Joel and Ellie. A new pack arrive in the convenience store, carrying a variety of weapons and Joel and Ellie duck out a broken window to reassess the situation and figure out how they can get out of here alive. What ensues are several minutes of cat and mouse and Joel and Ellie diligently work to take out each of the survivors one-by-one until none remain.
With the combat behind them, Joel and Ellie banter back and forth while they thoroughly explore the environment for anything that they can scavenge that may be useful to them. The exploration takes them through an abandoned building where the survivors apparently were camped out (and killing innocent people) to another roadway choked with abandoned vehicles – strangely beautiful as nature has really overgrown everything – as they head towards the bridge that is their only way out of this city, and any other survivors with less than noble intentions.

ALL of the screenshots were taken directly from our gameplay demo – yes, actual gameplay. I think they do a great job of representing a decent slice of the beauty and destruction present in the environments, and of the exploration and brutal nature of conflict in the world of The Last of Us.

The team has been cranking away at building more to the game and story of The Last of Us since we last hosted visitors – we can’t wait to pull back the curtain just a little more when the time comes.

Quick Shots – The Last of Us has really nasty enemies

Check out some images of a bust crafted by Naughty Dog, showing one of the Infected enemies from The Last of Us.

The Last of Us is set in the aftermath of an apocalypse brought about by brain-controlling fungus, which the frankly horrible bust manages to convey quite clearly.

Naughty Dog’s Evan Wells tweeted the first of these images, and GameInformer dug up the rest.

First revealed at the 2011 Spike VGAs, The Last of Us is a PlayStation 3 exclusive due in late 2012 or early 2013.

24′s Annie Wersching joins The Last of Us cast

Annie Wersching has joined the cast of The Last of Us, according to creative director Neil Druckmann. Wersching, who played Renee Walker in Seasons 7 and 8 of 24, joined the cast this week according to Druckmann. “Alright, Naughty Dog fans, go follow @Wersching, who kicked all sorts of ass this week as the newest member of The Last of Us family,” he said in a tweet. The only confirmed cast for the game until now were leads Troy Baker as Joel and Ashley Johnson as Ellie.

The new Naughty Dog IP launches either later this year or early next year for PS3.

Finally, some more news on the game. All I found was some features and some story line articles. I seriously cannot wait for this game. I'm hoping the "exploring" is vast. Well, as much as possible. I want to be able to open doors to houses and cars, but that's probably something they cannot do....

As for the graphics and gameplay screenshots, they look amazing. Doesn't look like gameplay graphics! :)

I doubt I will be disappointed. This is NAUGHTY Dog, after all. xD

Survival horror game The Last of Us sounds like it will be a truly amazing title that we just cannot wait for, and as more information becomes accessible our anticipation grows giving us cause to let you in on any details as soon as they are available.
Today we are looking into the challenges that will be experienced as this is not your average run of the mill survival game, The Last of Us will involve strategy as well as combat so sustaining injuries will have a drastic effect on how you continue journey. A recent article on Explosion emphasizes the strategy side of the game highlighting the characters, which are not trained to fight or use firearms so well planned attacks will be more advantageous than just running at opponents.

As The Last of Us director, Bruce Straley talks about enemies being realistic in combat, as it is not only the infected that will be a threat because there are humans fighting for survival as well, and more attention will be paid on keeping free from damage. Real consequences will come from receiving an injury and healing will not be instant, a wound can cause big problems unless you take care of it, and those who deal with encounters head on and carelessly will soon realize that they will not last long. This adds to the challenge of the game and shows that this is not one of those titles where you will easily regenerate, and last month we wrote a post on The Last of Us not being just your mindless zombie game with some informative details on the story involved.
Explosion reckon this game looks awesome and we can’t help but agree, we are sure the influence of Naughty Dog will include some great twists in this story driven title. Many gamers share this sentiment expecting more information at E3 and some would like to see a combination of gameplay from Uncharted 3 and Resident Evil 5 with an emphasis on survival, as opposed to just shooting. The Last of Us seems to have generated plenty of hype and some skepticism will come as expectations for another popular Naughty Dog title may have comparisons to Uncharted and Resident Evil although this looks like a very different approach, as a challenging and unique survival adventure.
In recent posts, we have looked at many aspects of this highly anticipated game and at the end of last month we also looked at some of the finer points regarding the characters, which helped us get an understanding of the human side of the characters involved and an insight by the voice-over actors. Do you think that the hype surrounding the The Last of Us will live up to the high expectations?

New The Last of Us trailer shows that not all enemies are fungal
Posted May 16, 2012 by James Haresign in News, Videos.
Video: Naughty Dog have released a new trailer for Last of Us showing problematic dealings with other humans and a redesigned Ellie.

last-of-us-trailer.jpg

It’s been quite some time since The Last of Us was revealed at the Spike Awards last December, and apart from claims that Ellie isn’t based on Ellen Paige we’ve not seen a lot more of the post-apocalyptic world. It shows that not all problems will be people with mushrooms growing out their heads, but normal people too. Also, Naughty Dog are saying this shows the new design of Ellie “to better reflect [voice actor] Ashley [Johnson]‘s personality, and also resemble a slightly younger teen more fitting to the story.”

For my money she still looks like Ellen Paige, a younger version then the last trailer admittedly, but the similarity is still there. If you’re wondering what the actress looks like go watch the Avengers, she’s the girl in the coffee shop that’s star struck when Captain America saves her.

BeefJack will be here with the latest news on The Last of Us.

The Last of Us: Naughty Dog on Ellie’s change
Ellie modified to resemble younger teen.

by Sal Romano [@salromano] at 04:03 PM EDT, May 18, 2012 .

You may have noticed some differences between the Ellie you’ve come to know and the Ellie you saw in this week’s The Last of Us trailer. (I actually didn’t.) She received a small reworking recently, and Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann has explained why.

“After delving further into the game’s narrative over the past few months, we decided to modify Ellie’s model to better reflect [actress] Ashley [Johnson]’s personality, and also resemble a slightly younger teen more fitting to the story,” Druckmann told IGN. “We’re happy with the final result shown in the cinematic we have released today, and hope the fans like her too.”

The Last of Us is due for PlayStation 3 in late 2012 or early 2013.

New The Last of Us screenshots

May 21, 2012 By Marlon Votta 0 Comments

As Naughty Dog continues to treat gamers with little snippets from the highly anticipated game known as The Last of Us, more new screenshots have come out grabbing our attention as interest for this title escalates. Recently new information on the content of The Last of Us along with a great new trailer has added to the excitement surrounding the game.

New screenshots have been added on thelastofus.com giving us more insight on what to expect. Last week an article on Joystiq delved deeper into Naughty Dog’s direction mentioning a recent demonstration of the game in Santa Monica, which did not focus on the fungal infection that is producing the zombie characters, as attention was paid to the vicious survivors that Joel and Ellie are set to come up against.

Naughty Dog didn’t say a word during Sony’s E3 2012 press conference. It didn’t have to. The video and screens below really speak for themselves.
The Last of Us is expected exclusively on PlayStation 3 in early 2013.
