Background info:
In modern times, Gaia was a planet of wonder and mystery. The land was flowing with life, a time where humans, Burmecians, mages and other mysterious creatures all lived in harmony. A place where pollution and enviromental destruction were unheard of, and the only towns and cities were merely a few large metropolises and small villages. However, although the land and the citizens lived in peace, the history of Gaia wasn't so similar...
The history takes place aeons ago, when the Mist, Outer, Forgotten and Lost Continents were all one massive landscape. In the past, there were the same species roaming the land: Burmecians, Summoners, Qu's, Mages, and Humans. However, there was but one race that nearly slipped into extinction, but only had to suffer the loneliness and despair of isolation. Trapped in an eternal prison, cursed to never leave what they thought was a secure habitat.
This race was the Nekote, a race combined with the appearances of both a cat and a human. Like humans, the Nekote stand up on two legs, usually reaching a height of 6'5 for females, and 8'6 for males. At birth, the infants are tiny, about half of a foot long. But over time, the hieght dramatically increases. Depending on the type of color a Nekote's fur is, it becomes the same color as their body hair.
For example: if a Nekote has black hair, the women keep long black hair that falls a little pass the waist, while the men keep the hair cut short. The arms and hands are covered in fur, (the same color as their hair) which is thin in the summer and thick in the winter. Their hands form into claws, the talons on each wide and strangly muscular finger and thumb. Also, like their feline cousins, and they have a tail. When born, and up until the age of 50 (in Nekote years, they look as if they are in their 18th year), they have only one tail. The much older Nekote have up to at least nine tails. The Nekotes are expert climbers. And their race do not have human ears. Ontop of their head are a large pair of cat ears, giving them nearly flawless hearing.
However, these Nekote do have their flaws. For being mostly cat and less human, they acquired most of cat weaknesses. Their eyesight is poor during the daytime. To them, it is as if gazing at the world through the eyes of somebody who lost their glasses. And the colors are a mystery to them as well. While they can see shades of purple, green, blue and gold, other colors may seem to look a shade of black, such as red. Their eyesight during the day was a flaw in battle. Most of the enemies they ecountered would attack during the day, and the fighting would never go so well. However, the eyesight had a brighter side. At night, Nekote eyes were impossibly perfect, and required most of the human's traits, such as seeing detail. This made them excellent hunters and warriors at night. Another weakness would be a minor phobia of water. Nekotes, like some cats, are not strong swimmers, and absolutely hate the rain.
This race was never popular. They were usually silent warriors (sometimes looked upon as assassins), men and woman alike. And with their strength brought them two rivals: the Burmecians, and the Summoners. Humans were easy prey, even then. Few could put up much of a fight due to ignorance and blind rage. This was what made Burmecians such powerful and dangerous rivals. Their knowledge was cunning, and their senses and knowledge of the ways of Dragon Knights made them swift, fast, and brutal. Although the cats usually prevail over the mouse, the Burmecians were by all means, more intelligent than the average street rat. However, Nekotes could hold their own against Burmecians. Usually, a fair amount of deaths were on both sides. These wars continued for hundreds of years, and the Burmecians never came close to the near annihilation of the race. It was the summoners who nearly wiped out their race.
Due to untold grudges, the cat people attacked the Summoners. But few died.... and only a few. The cat race had never encountered the powers of the Eidolons. The magical gods and goddesses arrivaling by a simple prayer wiped out the armies. Severe damage by Ice, Fire, Lighting, Water and other elemental and non-elemental attacks protected the summoners. Rivers of Nekote blood streamed across the land, and only a handful of survivors could do nothing more than flee. Their pride was destroyed... the legends of the fierce Nekote species burst into flames and went up in smoke.
The survivors left the Summoners, and traveled to the Ancient Tree of Life: the Iifa Tree. They buried their dead within the roots of the tree, in hope that the stream of life would deliever their souls to peace and rebirth. Overwhelmed by the battle's astonishing conclusion, some committed suicide (incapable with living with their defeat), others merely lived in silence, and some orphaned children had to live in grief and long for revenge. But over the years, the Nekote pushed the defeat away, deciding to take another chance at life.
However, their punishment was far from over.
Thousands of years later, when the landmass split into several continents and islands, the summoners' memories erased all knowledge of the Nekote. But their use of the Eidolons had increased to the point where control was out of their league. This was the Eidolon Leviathan. The a summoner had trapped the spirit of the Eidolon within an Aquamarine, then traveled to the Ancient Tree of Life, also known to them as the Iifa Tree. The Aquamarine was preserved in a statue.... but even the statue was too strong. And this was during the daylight, when the forgotten Nekote used this time for sleeping. With another Eidolon, Carbunkle, a seal was created around the tree. The process was slow, taking at least an hour to complete. When the process had completed, the Eidolon was sealed into the tree, along with the forgotten Nekote, now eternally imprisoned.
Before that time, much had changed. When the ancestors of the Nekote died, so did many of their old ways. The use of their claws for battling had now vanished from their minds. Only the elders who remembered could fight with their fangs and claws. The new warriors now relied on weapons forged by humans, a disappointment and embarassing trait to follow from the remains of a once proud race. They refused to learn the art of magic, and used twin daggers, shurikens, short swords, and spears for combat and thievery. This was their new traits they followed, becoming more human than cat.
The race was passed into myth. Nobody on Gaia had ever laid eyes on a Nekote.... nobody even believe them to exist. Only few books are written of them, but all containing the false information of a human in the daylight transforming into a cat during the night to prey on Burmecians and Summoners. All hope had been lost for the race...
Until the day when a small handful of Nekote that had escaped the Iifa Tree before it was sealed had decided to come out of hiding....
The RPG:
The RPG doesn't exactly start in the beginning of FFIX. I decided that the RPG is going to be a bit of an AU (meaning that Zidane might have met characters like Eiko and Amarant before Lindblum gets destroyed, but only for the convinience of the game).
You can roleplay as a Nekote character, and a Final Fantasy IX character.
Nekotes usually live in dark areas, because of their poor eyesight. So places like Treno and Evil Forest are usually where they would make their home, although some have been seen in places such as Lindblum and Alexandria (but because very little is known about their race, people regard believe that they are blind when they see them in the daytime).
I don't know how we're all going to eventually interact with each other, so for now let's just play it by ear and see how far we go.
